Event Reminders:Teen beaten by Israelis to speak in San Diego Sat.Saturday, 09/20/2014 The American teenager beaten by Israelis to speak in this Saturday evening in San Diego. -- An Israeli police officer has been charged with the beating of the Palestinian-American teenager that was caught on tape. Tariq Abu Khdeir was watching demonstrations in East Jerusalem when he was seized. The video shows him lying on the ground as the officers repeatedly beat him with batons. He was left with facial bruises and severely swollen eyes and lips. Tariq was a cousin of Mohammed Abu Khdeir, the Palestinian teen burned alive in a revenge attack for the killings of the three Israelis in the West Bank. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. If you think you're too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room. The question is not, do we go to church; the question is, have we been converted. The crux of Christianity is not whether or not we give donations to popular charities but whether or not we are really committed to the poor. A bad peace is even worse than war. And then to each other. No, the Lord has told us what is good. What he requires of us is this: to do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with our God. Peace is more important than all justice; and peace was not made for the sake of justice, but justice for the sake of peace. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. If you succumb to the temptation of using violence in the struggle, unborn generations will be the recipients of a long and desolate night of bitterness, and your chief legacy to the future will be an endless reign of meaningless chaos. Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess. A loving person lives in a loving world. A hostile person lives in a hostile world. Everyone you meet is your mirror. It is easier to fight for one's principles than to live up to them. Of all the frictional resistances, the one that most retards human movement is ignorance. But the wisdom from above is pure, first of all; it is also peaceful, gentle and friendly; it is full of compassion and produces a harvest of good deals,; it is free from prejudice and hypocrisy. The maxim that people should not have a right till they are ready to exercise it properly, is worthy of the fool in the old story who resolved not to go into the water till he had learned to swim. Instead of tug o' war, let's play hug o' war. War is an invention of the human mind. The human mind can invent peace with justice. A large group of us were crowded into the Gestapo hall, and at that moment the circumstances of all our lives were the same. All of us occupied the same space, the men behind the desk no less than those about to be questioned. What distinguished each of us was only our inner attitude. You know, if people are not pacifists, it's not their fault. It's because society puts them in that spot. You've got to change it. You don't just change a man - you've got to change his environment as you do it. Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one getting burned. Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction. The belief that we some day shall be able to prevent war is to me one with the belief in the possibility of making humanity really human. Murder and capital punishment are not opposites that cancel one another, but similars that breed their kind. It is the deed that teaches not the name we give it. Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals) is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission--to be of service to them whenever they require it... If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men. To see the earth as it truly is, small and blue in that eternal silence where it floats, is to see riders on the earth together, brothers on that bright loveliness in the eternal cold - brothers who know now they are truly brothers. Nonviolence which is a quality of the heart, cannot come by an appeal to the brain. I resolve to speak ill of no man whatever, not even in a matter of truth; but rather by some means excuse the faults I hear charged upon others, and upon proper occasions speak all the good I know of everybody. The real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Those who are ready to sacrifice freedom for security ultimately will lose both. You save your soul by saving someone else's body. Wars are not acts of God. They are caused by man, by man-made institutions, by the way in which man has organized his society. What man has made, man can change. Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is--whether its victim is human or animal--we cannot expect things to be much better in this world... We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight in killing we set back the progress of humanity. In order to find the edge, you must risk going over the edge. Angry heart -- you have no chance against my prayers. I am part and parcel of the whole and cannot find God apart from the rest of humanity. Forge thy tongue on an anvil of truth and what flies up, though it be but a spark, will have light. The first casualty when war comes is truth. It is only by feeling your love that the poor will forgive you for the gifts of bread. What all men fear, I too must fear - how barren and pointless a thought! If peace . . . only had the music and pageantry of war, there'd be no wars. To resort to power one need not be violent, and to speak to conscience one need not be meek. The most effective action both resorts to power and engages conscience. Nonviolent actions does not have to get others to be nice. It can in effect force them to consult their consciences. Nor does it have to petition those in power to do something about a situation. It can face the authorities with a new fact and say: Accept this new situation which we have created. The point of nonviolence is to build a floor, a strong new floor, beneath which we can no longer sink. A platform which stands a few feet above napalm, torture, exploitation, poison gas, A and H bombs, the works. Give man a decent place to stand. Peace is not a relationship of nations. It is a condition of mind brought about by a serenity of soul. Peace is not merely an absence of war. It is also a state of mind. Bill Maher shredded by Glenn Greenwald on US intervention in Muslim countries -- Glenn Greenwald came through as he usually does, not letting Bill Maher get away with his silly, blinkered boogeyman narrative that it’s all PC liberalism to not say Islam is an inherently and uniquely violent religion causing the most horror and violence in the world. Greenwald gave the example of the West Bank and the extremist Jewish settlers who justify land theft and persecution of Palestinians based on a perceived divine mandate.
