This 'N That

We challenge the culture of violence when we ourselves act in the certainty that violence is no longer acceptable, that it's tired and outdated no matter how many cling to it in the stubborn belief that it still works and that it's still valid.
- Gerard Vanderhaar

If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.
- Bishop Desmond Tutu

Nobody was born nonviolent. No one was born charitable. None of us comes to these things by nature but only by conversion. The first duty of the nonviolent community is helping its members work upon themselves and come to conversion.
- Lanza del Vasto

No matter how big a nation is, it is no stronger that its weakest people, and as long as you keep a person down, some part of you has to be down there to hold him down, so it means you cannot soar as you might otherwise.
- Marian Anderson

Non-violence is a very powerful weapon. Most people don't understand the power of non-violence and tend to be amazed by the whole idea. Those who have been involved in bringing about change and see the difference between violence and non-violence are firmly committed to a lifetime of non-violence, not because it is easy or because it is cowardly, but because it is an effective and very powerful way.
- Cesar Chavez

Do your work as though you had a thousand years to live, & as if you were to die tomorrow.
- Mother Anna Lee, founder of the Shakers

In India when we meet and part we often say, "Namaste," which means: I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides; I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides; I honor the place in you of love, of light, of truth, of peace. I honor the place within you where if you are in that place in you and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us….. "Namaste."
- Ram Dass

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.
- Alvin Toffler

Those who are ready to sacrifice freedom for security ultimately will lose both.
- Abraham Lincoln

The belief in the possibility of a short decisive war appears to be one of the most ancient and dangerous of human illusions.
- Robert Lynd (1879-1949), Anglo-Irish essayist, journalist

Is it progress if a cannibal uses a knife and fork?
- Stanislaw Lem

For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.
- Pythagoras

Until he extends the circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace.
- Albert Schweitzer

When the people fear the government you have tyranny...when the government fears the people you have liberty.
- Thomas Jefferson

The love of one's country is a splendid thing. But why should love stop at the border?
- Pablo Casals

I don't do great things. I do small things with great love.
- Mother Teresa

I resolve to speak ill of no man whatever, not even in a matter of truth; but rather by some means excuse the faults I hear charged upon others, and upon proper occasions speak all the good I know of everybody.
- Benjamin Franklin

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.
- Matthew 5:3

When a true genius appears in this world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him.
- Jonathan Swift

The idea of absolute freedom is fiction. It's based on the idea of an independent self. But, in fact, there's no such thing. There's no self without other people. There's no self without sunlight. There's no self without dew. And water. And bees to pollinate the food we eat....So the idea of behaving in a way that doesn't acknowledge those reciprocal relationships is not really freedom, it's indulgence.
- Peter Coyote

Our future on this planet, exposed as it is to nuclear annihilation, depends one one single factor: humanity must make a moral about-face.
- Pope John Paul II

You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.
- Indira Gandhi, 1971

Sports plays a societal role in engendering jingoist and chauvinist attitudes. They're designed to organize a community to be committed to their gladiators.
- Noam Chomsky

No one is so foolish as to prefer to peace, war, in which, instead of sons burying their fathers, fathers bury their sons.
- Croesus, King of Lydia, in Herodotus' The Persian Wars

Some things you must always be unable to bear. Some things you must never stop refusing to bear. Injustice and outrage and dishonor and shame. No matter how young you are or how old you have got. Not for kudos and not for cash, your picture in the paper nor money in the bank, neither. Just refuse to bear them.
- William Faulkner

When asked what he would do if he knew the world would end tomorrow, Martin Luther said, "I would plant a tree."
- Martin Luther

The question is not, do we go to church; the question is, have we been converted. The crux of Christianity is not whether or not we give donations to popular charities but whether or not we are really committed to the poor.
- Joan Chittester, OSB

Why Chuck Lowery is running for O'side office ...
Reporter Promise Yee of the COAST NEWS wrote the following: "Lowery said he is compelled to run because of city giveaways he sees going to big developers. "Lowery said he is all for thoughtful downtown development and major hotels coming to Oceanside, but does not agree with the 15-year fee deferral the current City Council approved for hotel developers. -- He said this courtesy to big developers puts off collecting needed funds that could pay for maintenance on water, sewer and roadway infrastructure the hotels use. It then puts the burden of paying for infrastructure maintenance on residents and smaller businesses during the 15-year wait."

We are cheap. We are suspicious. We will shoot first. It does not have to be this way. Like Lincoln before us, it is time to do something about it. EXAMPLE: -- The story of the toddler who was severely injured when, during a drug raid, a local SWAT team came busting in and someone threw a flash-bang grenade into his crib. Well, his mother has written a chilling first-hand account of what happened to her son, and to her, during their encounter with one of our insanely militarized police forces. By Charles P. Pierce

Report: Pesticides killing more than just the bees
A class of pesticides linked to the decline of honeybees is also affecting a wide variety of other beneficial organisms such as earthworms and butterflies, according to a major study that directly contradicts the Government’s relaxed stance on the use of neonicotinoids. A group of 29 scientists from four continents found unequivocal evidence from hundreds of published studies to claim that "neonics" -- the most widely used pesticides in the world – are having a dramatic impact on the ecosystems that support food production and wildlife.

Judge: People on no-fly list must have due process
on Tuesday, a federal judge in Oregon ruled that the Department of Homeland Security must give people a better avenue to pursue a claim that they were wrongly put on the list. -- Now, the government can seek some way around U.S. District Judge Anna Brown's order. Or, they can do what she asked. She said the government must tell people what unclassified information was used to put them on the list. And if the information's classified, at least tell them the nature and extent of it. -- She said it shouldn't leave people without an option to challenge their status or make blanket rulings that ignore the specifics of people's lives.

Methane becoming dominant global climate force
It will be impossible to adapt to the worst consequences of global warming, as IPCC suggests. The Arctic must be cooled, ASAP, to prevent the sea ice disappearing with disastrous global consequences. Rapid warming in the Arctic, as sea ice retreats, has already disrupted the jet stream. The resulting escalation in weather extremes is causing a food crisis which must be addressed before the existing conflicts in Asia and Africa spread more widely.

Late-breaking news: This just in ...

News that did not make our deadline:

Intelligence chief in bald-faced lie to Congress

HE LIED to the nation! -- James Clapper, Director of National Intelligence (DNI) LIED to congress. Let me repeat that for you - he didn't "mislead" -- he LIED! Why he isn't under the jail? Congress impeached Pres. Bill Clinton for equivocating about a sexual dalliance, but Congress sucked up to James Clapper who outright lied about a grave criminal and unconstitutional policy.

Nagasaki photos Day After the Atomic Bomb
Nagasaki photos taken one day after the Atomic Bomb dropped -- newly discovered.

The real reason the US dropped A-bombs on Japan
The US decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 was to start a new war, the Cold War, rather than end the Second World War, according to two nuclear historians who say they have new evidence backing the controversial theory. Killing over 200,000 people 60 years ago was done more to impress the Soviet Union than to cow Japan, they say. And the US President who took the decision, Harry Truman, was culpable.
