Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action. We may never be strong enough to be entirely nonviolent in thought, word and deed. But we must keep nonviolence as our goal and make strong progress towards it. The Attainment of freedom, whether for a person, a nation or a world, must be in exact proportion to the attainment of nonviolence for each. Since we are to be conformed to the image of Christ, how can we then fight our enemies with the sword? ... Spears and swords of iron we leave to those who, alas, consider human blood and swine's blood of well-nigh equal value ... The law, in its majestic equality, forbids both rich and poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread. God looks unjust but is not. God asks more from those who more is given. They are not greater or better; they have greater responsibility. They must give more service. Live to serve. No one is so foolish as to prefer to peace, war, in which, instead of sons burying their fathers, fathers bury their sons. One must care about a world one will never see. Justice is truth in action. Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one getting burned. The question is not, do we go to church; the question is, have we been converted. The crux of Christianity is not whether or not we give donations to popular charities but whether or not we are really committed to the poor. To save one life, it is as if you had saved the world. A bad peace is even worse than war. The dark night is over and dawn has begun. Rise, hope of the ages, arise like the sun! All speech, flow to music; all hearts, beat as one. In India when we meet and part we often say, "Namaste," which means: I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides; I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides; I honor the place in you of love, of light, of truth, of peace. I honor the place within you where if you are in that place in you and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us….. "Namaste." Forge thy tongue on an anvil of truth and what flies up, though it be but a spark, will have light. It is the job of thinking people, not to be on the side of the executioners. When you're finally up on the moon, looking back at the earth, all these differences and nationalistic traits are pretty well going to blend and you're going to get a concept that maybe this is really one world and why the hell can't we learn to live together like decent people? What good is it to me that Mary gave birth to the son of God fourteen hundred years ago, and I do not also give birth to the Son of God in my time and in my culture? We are all meant to be mothers of God. God is always needing to be born. I expect to pass through this world but once, therefore any good that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not come this way again. Is it progress if a cannibal uses a knife and fork? The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens. Taking the first footstep with a good thought, the second with a good word, and the third with a good deed, I entered paradise. Our future on this planet, exposed as it is to nuclear annihilation, depends one one single factor: humanity must make a moral about-face. Aye, fight! But not your neighbor. Fight rather all the things that cause you and your neighbor to fight. Angels can fly because they take themselves so lightly. A great many people think they are thinking when they are just rearranging their prejudices. Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds them. We live by the death of others. We are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men. Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace. Your life and my life flow into each other as wave flows into wave, and unless there is peace and joy and freedom for you, there can be no real peace or joy or freedom for me. To see reality--not as we expect it to be but as it is--is to see that unless we live for each other and in and through each other, we do not really live very satisfactorily; that there can really be life only where there really is, in just this sense, love. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. A peace that comes from fear and not from the heart is the opposite of peace. It is penance to work, to give oneself to others, to endure the pinpricks of community living. Bless your persecutors; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Have the same attitude toward all. Put away ambitious thoughts and associate with those who are lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Never repay injury with injury. See that your conduct is honorable in the eyes of all. If possible, live peacefully with everyone. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves; leave that to God's wrath, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine; I will repay," says the Lord. But "If your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; by doing this you will heap burning coals upon their heads." Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good. Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And when you look into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you. When death, the great reconciler, has come, it is never our tenderness that we repent of, but our severity. I do not believe in using women in combat, because females are too fierce. The first casualty when war comes is truth. You save your soul by saving someone else's body. When the rich make war, it's the poor that die. Nothing could be worse than the fear that one had given up too soon, and left one unexpended effort that might have saved the world. The Holy Prophet Mohammed came into this world and taught us: 'That man is a Muslim who never hurts anyone by word or deed, but who works for the benefit and happiness of God's creatures. Belief in God is to love one's fellow men.' Peace is not the absence of conflict but the presence of creative alternatives for responding to conflict -- alternatives to passive or aggressive responses, alternatives to violence. Ironically, the first time she caught the attention of progressive and Democratic activists was when she courageously skewered a Democrat, Obama's first term Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, in a TARP oversight hearing. Her reputation for taking on anyone in either party who sides with the big Wall Street banks and other special interests squeezing the middle class and working poor is a big part of what gives the credibility to rally progressives out of their 2014 doldrums, and turn this campaign into a referendum on the wealthy special interests who are hurting the Main Street economy. >From DEMOCRACY NOW -- An Occupy Wall Street activist has been found guilty of assaulting a New York City police officer in a trial that critics say should have been about the police assaulting her. Cecily McMillan was arrested in March 2012 as protesters tried to re-occupy Zuccotti Park, six months after Occupy began. McMillan was convicted of deliberately striking officer Grantley Bovell with her elbow, leaving him with a black eye. McMillan says she swung her arm instinctively after being grabbed in the right breast from behind. To support this claim, defense lawyers showed photos of bruising to her chest during trial. In addition to her injuries, McMillan says she went into a seizure as officers pinned her down. She was later treated for post-traumatic stress disorder. You must not ever forget this incident at U.C. Davis: Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis. The militarization of our local police, the War on our Youth, the fascist oppression of peaceful assembly, protest and free speech in America. During peacefully Occupy Movement,(Nov. 2011) police came in to tear down tents and proceeded to arrest students who stood in their way. Once students peacefully demanded the release of the arrested, a police officer unnecessarily pepper sprays the students to open a path for the rest of the officers. -- The officer who sprayed the students was UC Davis Police Lt. John Pike. -- Notice all the other police just standing around watching, as if nothing abnormal or outrageous is happening.
