This 'N That

The master's tools will never destroy the master's house.
- Audre Lorde, Sister Outsider

If you obey all the rules you will miss the fun.
- Katherine Hepburn

Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds them. We live by the death of others. We are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.
- Leonardo Da Vinci

Jaw-jaw is better than war-war.
- Harold MacMillan

Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.
- James Levin

A good end sanctify evil means; not must we ever do evil, that good might come of it. We are ready to retaliate, rather than forgive or gain by love and information . . . Force may subdue, but love gains. And one that forgives first wins the laurel.
- William Penn

Such as it is, the press has become the greatest power within the Western World, more powerful than the legislature, the executive and judiciary. One would like to ask; by whom has it been elected and to whom is it responsible?
- Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of humans as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is not safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.
- Helen Keller

Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

The pens which write against disarmament are made with the same steel from which guns are made.
- Aristide Briand, French statesman, Nobel Peace Prize, 1926

The bomb that fell on Hiroshima fell on America, too.
- Hermann Hagedorn

Through Gandhi and my own life experience, I have learned about nonviolence. I believe that human life is a very special gift from God, and that no one has a right to take that away in any cause, however just. I am convinced that nonviolence is more powerful than violence.
- Cesar Chavez

Youth is the first victim of war; the first fruit of peace. It takes 20 years or more of peace to make a man; it takes only 20 seconds of war to destroy him.
- King Baudouin I, King of Belgium

Life is a whim of several billion cells to be you for a while.
- Unknown

I plan to stand by nonviolence, because I have found it to be a philosophy of life that regulates not only my dealings in the struggle for racial justice, but also my dealings with people, and with my own self.
- Martin Luther King Jr.

You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.
- Indira Gandhi, 1971

All works of love are works of peace.
- Mother Teresa

The greatest disease in the West today is not TB or leprosy; it is being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for. We can cure physical diseases with medicine, but the only cure for loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love. There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread but there are many more dying for a little love. The poverty in the West is a different kind of poverty - it is not only a poverty of loneliness but also of spirituality. There's a hunger for love, as there is a hunger for God.
- Mother Teresa

I resolve to speak ill of no man whatever, not even in a matter of truth; but rather by some means excuse the faults I hear charged upon others, and upon proper occasions speak all the good I know of everybody.
- Benjamin Franklin

Much violence is based on the illusion that life is a property to be defended and not to be shared.
- Henri Nouwen

When death, the great reconciler, has come, it is never our tenderness that we repent of, but our severity.
- George Eliot

Violence in the voice is often only the death rattle of reason in the throat.
- John Boyes

The finger pulls the trigger, but the trigger may also be pulling the finger.
- Dr. Leonard Berkowitz

There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root."
- Henry David Thoreau, Walden

We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace.
- Gladstone

Abba Poeman said about Abba Prior that every single day he made a fresh beginning.
- Desert Fathers and Mothers

Then it was as if I suddenly saw the secret beauty of their hearts, the depths of their hearts where neither sin nor desire nor self-knowledge can reach, the core of their reality, the person that each one is in God's eyes. If only they could see themselves as they really are. If only we could see each other that way all the time, there would be no more war, no more hatred, no more cruelty, no more greed . . . I suppose the big problem would be that we would fall down and worship each other.
- Thomas Merton

Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace.
- Luke 19:42

Fondly do we hope, ferverently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away.

When asked what he would do if he knew the world would end tomorrow, Martin Luther said, "I would plant a tree."
- Martin Luther

Only when there are many people who are pools of peace, silence, understanding, will war disappear.
- Osho (1931-1990)

There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.
- Douglas Adams

Nonviolence is not a garment to be put on and off at will. Its seat is in the heart, and it must be an inseparable part of our being.
- Mahatma Gandhi

I do not believe in using women in combat, because females are too fierce.
- Margaret Mead

In all things it is better to hope than to despair.
- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

It is only by feeling your love that the poor will forgive you for the gifts of bread.
- St. Vincent de Paul

The governors of the world believe, and have always believed, that virtue can only be taught by teaching falsehood, and that any man who knew the truth would be wicked. I disbelieve this, absolutely and entirely. I believe that love of truth is the basis of all real virtue, and that virtues based upon lies can only do harm.
- Bertrand Russell

I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.
- Albert Einstein

War is, at first, the hope that one will be better off; next, the expectation that the other fellow will be worse off; then, the satisfaction that he isn't any better off; and, finally, the surprise at everyone's being worse off.
- Karl Kraus (1874-1936)

Immorality: the morality of those who are having a better time.
- H.L. Mencken

A man may build himself a throne of bayonets, but he cannot sit on it.
- William Ralph Inge

Dare to be naive.
- Buckminster Fuller

An act of love, a voluntary taking on oneself of some of the pain of the world, increases the courage and love and hope of all.
- Dorothy Day

The means by which we live have outdistanced the ends for which we live. Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men.
- Martin Luther King

The real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth.
- Thich Nhat Hanh

Very few people chose war. They chose selfishness and the result was war. Each of us, individually and nationally, must choose: total love or total war.
- Dave Dellinger

Only the poor knew the meaning of life; the rich and the safe had to guess.

No one is so foolish as to prefer to peace, war, in which, instead of sons burying their fathers, fathers bury their sons.
- Croesus, King of Lydia, in Herodotus' The Persian Wars

If we don't stop the bomb who will take care of the flowers?
- Neil J. Seattle, Age 9

Heresy is only another word for freedom of thought.
- Graham Greene, 1981

War is an act of violence pushed to its utmost limits.
- Major General Carl von Clausewitz, 1832

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one getting burned.
- Buddha

Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.
- John F. Kennedy

I really see no other solution than to turn inwards and to root out all the rottenness there. I no longer believe that we can change anything in the world until we first change ourselves. And that seems to me the only lesson to be learned from this war.
- Etty Hillesum (concentration camp victim)

Mankind will never win lasting peace so long as men use their full resources only in tasks of war. While we are yet at peace, let us mobilize the potentialities, particularly the moral and spiritual potentialities, which we usually reserve for war.
- John Foster Dulles, War or Peace 1950.

Insanity in individuals is something rare - but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule.
- Friedrich Nietzsche

People who are willing to give up freedom for the sake of short term security, deserve neither freedom nor security.

Capitalism is the extraordinary belief that the nastiest of men, for the nastiest of reasons, will somehow work for the benefit of us all.
- John Maynard Keynes

Nobody was born nonviolent. No one was born charitable. None of us comes to these things by nature but only by conversion. The first duty of the nonviolent community is helping its members work upon themselves and come to conversion.
- Lanza del Vasto

Wars are not acts of God. They are caused by man, by man-made institutions, by the way in which man has organized his society. What man has made, man can change.
- Frederick Moore Vinson, Speech at Arlington National Cemetery (Memorial Day, 1945)

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Joy is the most infallible sign of the presence of God.
- Leon Bloy

While seeking revenge, dig two graves - one for yourself.
- Doug Horton

- Leo Tolstoy

When the rich make war it's the poor that die.
- Jean Paul Sartre

Each person has inside a basic decency and goodness. If he listens to it and acts on it, he is giving a great deal of what it is the world needs most. It is not complicated but it takes courage. It takes courage for a person to listen to his own goodness and act on it.

Feinstein staunch defender of spy agencies

To the dismay of many liberals, Dianne Feinstein has fought to preserve the National Security Agency's massive data tracking programs. A nearly unanimous state Senate recently called on Congress to halt the "blanket, unreasonable, and unconstitutional collection of all Americans' telephone records." -- The Party "called on Congress to halt the "blanket, unreasonable, and unconstitutional collection of all Americans' telephone records." Hunter, Issa vote against public safety: Editorial
News
Duncan Hunter & D. Issa voted to reduce public safety and health from hazardous chemical spills: On the same day that the disastrous chemical spill into the Elk River in W. Virginia was announced, Duncan Hunter and Darrell Issa both voted for House Resolution 2279 bill. This bill, which would reduce the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) oversight of stored hazardous substances. Unfortunately this bill passed the House along a party-line split. 220 Republicans and 5 Democrats voted for the bill. 4 Republicans and 184 Democrats voted against the bill. Every CA Republican voted for reducing restrictions. Issa and Duncan Hunter are part of a party that aims to reduce public safety and health. -- San Diego Democrats Juan Vargas, Scott Peters and Susan Davis commendably voted AGAINST the bill.

Feinstein treats NSA leaders like 'matinee idols'
Article
GLENN GREENWALD: -- Obama's NSA 'reforms' are little more than a PR attempt to mollify the public. Obama is draping the banner of change over the NSA status quo. Bulk surveillance that caused such outrage will remain in place. Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Rep Mike Rogers "the most devoted and slavish loyalists of the National Security State" [EDITOR'S COMMENT: It is way past high time for California to boot Feinstein out of office for her ardent and unquestioning support of gross and dangerous violations of the 4th Amendment protections]

Obamacare is awful -- yet it's a godsend
Article
By MICHAEL MOORE -- "Today marks the beginning of health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act's new insurance exchanges, for which two million Americans have signed up. Now that the individual mandate is officially here, let me begin with an admission: Obamacare is awful." Yet it is a godsend, far better than what we had, and infinitely better than what the Republicans offer.

The Trouble with Christie (Nixonesque)
Article
from THE NEW YORKER: -- "Character is destiny, and politicians usually get the scandals they deserve, with a sense of inevitability about them. Warren G. Harding surrounded himself with corrupt pols and businessmen, then checked out, leading to the most sensational case of bribery in American history. Ronald Reagan combined zealotry and fantasy, and Oliver North acted them out. Bill Clinton was libidinous and truth-parsing but also cautious, while George W. Bush was an incurious crusader who believed himself chosen by God and drove almost the entire national-security establishment into lawlessness without thinking twice. Christie, more than any of these, is reminiscent of the President whose petty hatefulness destroyed him—which is why, as NBC's newscaster said when signing off on an early report on that long-ago burglary, I don’t think we've heard the last of this."

Many public offices open this year in No. County
News
Newsletter from Democrats of Oceanside/Carlsbad - This is an election year so we Democrats have plenty to do. You might want to file for something. I wish that hopeful nominees for higher office had first run for lower offices. They’re a good training ground and give people name recognition, something tangible to put on their qualification sheet. You have some months yet before filing for the local offices I’ve listed below. Be thinking about it. Most local offices are on Nov. ballot. State, Fed., Cty. Sup., the higher offices, run in both elections:

SHOCKING: Fullerton police murderers acquitted

Last week, a jury acquitted two Fullerton police officers accused in the beating and death of Kelly Thomas, a homeless man with schizophrenia. That the the jury reached a "not guilty" verdict despite viewing video, audio, and images of the incident shocked many observers and sparked protests in the streets of Fullerton. WARNING: The level of police violence in this video is shocking. Thomas' death is a case study of how ubiquitous phones with cameras and the Internet are transferring power from the government, police, and the media to the masses. Images and word of the beating spread not because of official communications but by viral cell phone video of the incident and a horrific hospital photo taken by his father of Thomas in a coma.

The speech that brought the wrath of war mongers

"The time has come for America to hear the truth about this tragic war", spoke Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in April 1967. This abbreviated version of perhaps his greatest speech, "Beyond Vietnam", was so powerful it shook the Pentagon and the war machine of America. It drew violent condemnation and spread virulent hatred of him for speaking the Truth. TIME magazine condemned King's speech as "... demagogic slander that sounded like a script for Radio Hanoi." Today we have a new generation speaking the truth, and once again the dark fascist forces are seeking to silence them. These word from Dr. King are immortal.

Why nobody believes Pres. Obama any more ...

Obama: 'Nobody Is Listening to Your Phone Calls'. June 7, 2013. Either Mr. Obama is terribly deluded, or terribly dumb, but we all know the spooks are listening to our phone calls -- reading our email -- and manipulating the markets and stealing our money. (very short video)

Sen. Dianne Feinstein Deploys All The 'Intelligence' Cliches In Op-Ed Defending Metadata Program -- If you've heard anything from Feinstein over the past few months, you've heard these lies to defend NSA intrusive metadata spying on American. In fact, if you've heard anything from any of the NSA's defenders, including Gen. Alexander himself, you've heard these arguments. America heard Gen. James Clapper tell blatant lies in Congressional testimony. Feinstein has betrayed the Constitution, her constituents, and the Constitution.

Getting worse: US sailors nuked by Fukushima
News
Toll of U.S. Sailors Devastated by Fukushima Radiation Continues to Climb. Within a day of Fukushima One’s March 11, 2011, melt-down, American "first responders" from the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan were drenched in radioactive fallout. In the midst of a driving snow storm, sailors reported a cloud of warm air with a metallic taste that poured over the Reagan. -- Then-Prime Minister Naoto Kan, at the time a nuclear supporter, says "the first meltdown occurred five hours after the earthquake." The lawsuit charges that Tokyo Electric Power knew large quantities of radiation were pouring into the air and water, but said nothing to the Navy or the public.

Bruce Springsteen roasts Chris Christie

Springsteen reworked "Born To Run" to address the Fort Lee, NJ bridge scandal. "Man, I've gotta take a leak, but I can't," he sang. "I'm stuck in Governor Chris Christie's Fort Lee, New Jersey traffic jaaaaam." -- Chris Christie has just received his harshest rebuke yet, courtesy of the Garden State's real boss, Bruce Springsteen. -- Christie — a Republican — is a major Springsteen fan, noting that he cried last year when the liberal rock legend, who regularly campaigns for Democratic candidates, finally acknowledged him in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. The two men hugged at the time, but that embrace is now ancient history after seeing Springsteen’s latest appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

Volkswagen way to better labor-mgmt relations
News
A rational, pragmatic new approach to Labor-Management relations imported from Germany. OP-ED from LOS ANGELES TIMES -- "Works councils — elected bodies representing all workers in a plant, both blue and white collar — are acclaimed as one of the best, most innovative features of Germany's labor relations system. They have been shown to enhance efficiency, adaptability and cooperation. By supporting the use of work sharing (agreeing to reduce everyone's hours rather than laying some people off), for example, these councils helped Germany experience less unemployment during the Great Recession and a faster, more robust recovery since then."

Manning Video:American troops slaughter civilians

Video depicts a US Apache attack helicopter killing 12 civilians and wounding two children on the ground in Baghdad in 2007. These acts constitute three separate war crimes. All with calloused video-game contempt for human life. - Manning fulfilled his legal duty to report war crimes. He complied with his legal duty to obey lawful orders but also his legal duty to disobey unlawful orders. -- The Army covered up the evidence and declared the war crime "justified". Sen. Warren sponsors Equal Employment Act

Senator Warren's interview on MSNBC's "All in with Chris Hayes" about the Equal Employment for All Act. The legislation would prohibit employers from requiring potential employees to disclose their credit history as part of the job application process. It was previously thought that credit history may provide insight into an individual's character, but research has shown that an individual's credit rating has little to no correlation with his or her ability to be successful in the workplace. -- "A bad credit rating is far more often the result of unexpected medical costs, unemployment, economic downturns, or other bad breaks than it is a reflection on an individual's character or abilities," Senator Warren said.

UC Davis Protestors Pepper Sprayed (raw footage)

You must not ever forget this incident at U.C. Davis: Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis. The militarization of our local police, the War on our Youth, the fascist oppression of peaceful assembly, protest and free speech in America. During peacefully Occupy Movement,(Nov. 2011) police came in to tear down tents and proceeded to arrest students who stood in their way. Once students peacefully demanded the release of the arrested, a police officer unnecessarily pepper sprays the students to open a path for the rest of the officers. -- The officer who sprayed the students was UC Davis Police Lt. John Pike. -- Notice all the other police just standing around watching, as if nothing abnormal or outrageous is happening. This is a day that will forever live in ignominy in America.
