Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds them. We live by the death of others. We are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men. Jaw-jaw is better than war-war. Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action. A good end sanctify evil means; not must we ever do evil, that good might come of it. We are ready to retaliate, rather than forgive or gain by love and information . . . Force may subdue, but love gains. And one that forgives first wins the laurel. Such as it is, the press has become the greatest power within the Western World, more powerful than the legislature, the executive and judiciary. One would like to ask; by whom has it been elected and to whom is it responsible? Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of humans as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is not safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them. The pens which write against disarmament are made with the same steel from which guns are made. The bomb that fell on Hiroshima fell on America, too. Through Gandhi and my own life experience, I have learned about nonviolence. I believe that human life is a very special gift from God, and that no one has a right to take that away in any cause, however just. I am convinced that nonviolence is more powerful than violence. Youth is the first victim of war; the first fruit of peace.It takes 20 years or more of peace to make a man; it takes only 20 seconds of war to destroy him. Life is a whim of several billion cells to be you for a while. I plan to stand by nonviolence, because I have found it to be a philosophy of life that regulates not only my dealings in the struggle for racial justice, but also my dealings with people, and with my own self. You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist. All works of love are works of peace. The greatest disease in the West today is not TB or leprosy; it is being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for. We can cure physical diseases with medicine, but the only cure for loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love. There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread but there are many more dying for a little love. The poverty in the West is a different kind of poverty - it is not only a poverty of loneliness but also of spirituality. There's a hunger for love, as there is a hunger for God. I resolve to speak ill of no man whatever, not even in a matter of truth; but rather by some means excuse the faults I hear charged upon others, and upon proper occasions speak all the good I know of everybody. Much violence is based on the illusion that life is a property to be defended and not to be shared. When death, the great reconciler, has come, it is never our tenderness that we repent of, but our severity. Violence in the voice is often only the death rattle of reason in the throat. The finger pulls the trigger, but the trigger may also be pulling the finger. There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root." We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace. Abba Poeman said about Abba Prior that every single day he made a fresh beginning. Then it was as if I suddenly saw the secret beauty of their hearts, the depths of their hearts where neither sin nor desire nor self-knowledge can reach, the core of their reality, the person that each one is in God's eyes. If only they could see themselves as they really are. If only we could see each other that way all the time, there would be no more war, no more hatred, no more cruelty, no more greed . . . I suppose the big problem would be that we would fall down and worship each other. Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace. Fondly do we hope, ferverently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. When asked what he would do if he knew the world would end tomorrow, Martin Luther said, "I would plant a tree." Only when there are many people who are pools of peace, silence, understanding, will war disappear. There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened. Nonviolence is not a garment to be put on and off at will. Its seat is in the heart, and it must be an inseparable part of our being. I do not believe in using women in combat, because females are too fierce. In all things it is better to hope than to despair. It is only by feeling your love that the poor will forgive you for the gifts of bread. The governors of the world believe, and have always believed, that virtue can only be taught by teaching falsehood, and that any man who knew the truth would be wicked. I disbelieve this, absolutely and entirely. I believe that love of truth is the basis of all real virtue, and that virtues based upon lies can only do harm. I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones. War is, at first, the hope that one will be better off; next, the expectation that the other fellow will be worse off; then, the satisfaction that he isn't any better off; and, finally, the surprise at everyone's being worse off. Immorality: the morality of those who are having a better time. A man may build himself a throne of bayonets, but he cannot sit on it. Dare to be naive. An act of love, a voluntary taking on oneself of some of the pain of the world, increases the courage and love and hope of all. The means by which we live have outdistanced the ends for which we live. Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men. The real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Very few people chose war. They chose selfishness and the result was war. Each of us, individually and nationally, must choose: total love or total war. Only the poor knew the meaning of life; the rich and the safe had to guess. One day we shall win freedom, but not only for ourselves. We shall so appeal to your heart and conscience that we shall win you in the process, and our victory will be a double victory. No one is so foolish as to prefer to peace, war, in which, instead of sons burying their fathers, fathers bury their sons. If we don't stop the bomb who will take care of the flowers? Heresy is only another word for freedom of thought. War is an act of violence pushed to its utmost limits. Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one getting burned. Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. I really see no other solution than to turn inwards and to root out all the rottenness there. I no longer believe that we can change anything in the world until we first change ourselves. And that seems to me the only lesson to be learned from this war. Mankind will never win lasting peace so long as men use their full resources only in tasks of war. While we are yet at peace, let us mobilize the potentialities, particularly the moral and spiritual potentialities, which we usually reserve for war. Insanity in individuals is something rare - but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule. People who are willing to give up freedom for the sake of short term security, deserve neither freedom nor security. Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him. Capitalism is the extraordinary belief that the nastiest of men, for the nastiest of reasons, will somehow work for the benefit of us all. Nobody was born nonviolent. No one was born charitable. None of us comes to these things by nature but only by conversion. The first duty of the nonviolent community is helping its members work upon themselves and come to conversion. Wars are not acts of God. They are caused by man, by man-made institutions, by the way in which man has organized his society. What man has made, man can change. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Joy is the most infallible sign of the presence of God. While seeking revenge, dig two graves - one for yourself. Why does man have reason if he can only be influenced by violence? When the rich make war it's the poor that die. Each person has inside a basic decency and goodness. If he listens to it and acts on it, he is giving a great deal of what it is the world needs most. It is not complicated but it takes courage. Last week, a jury acquitted two Fullerton police officers accused in the beating and death of Kelly Thomas, a homeless man with schizophrenia. That the the jury reached a "not guilty" verdict despite viewing video, audio, and images of the incident shocked many observers and sparked protests in the streets of Fullerton. WARNING: The level of police violence in this video is shocking. Thomas' death is a case study of how ubiquitous phones with cameras and the Internet are transferring power from the government, police, and the media to the masses. Images and word of the beating spread not because of official communications but by viral cell phone video of the incident and a horrific hospital photo taken by his father of Thomas in a coma. "The time has come for America to hear the truth about this tragic war", spoke Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in April 1967. This abbreviated version of perhaps his greatest speech, "Beyond Vietnam", was so powerful it shook the Pentagon and the war machine of America. It drew violent condemnation and spread virulent hatred of him for speaking the Truth. TIME magazine condemned King's speech as "... demagogic slander that sounded like a script for Radio Hanoi." The helicopter then fired on and killed the people trying to rescue the wounded. Finally, a US tank drove over one of the bodies, cutting the man in half. These acts constitute three separate war crimes. All with calloused video-game contempt for human life. - Manning fulfilled his legal duty to report war crimes. He complied with his legal duty to obey lawful orders but also his legal duty to disobey unlawful orders. -- The Army covered up the evidence and declared the war crime "justified". Now they say that exposing the massacre is criminal.

Senator Warren's interview on MSNBC's "All in with Chris Hayes" about the Equal Employment for All Act. The legislation would prohibit employers from requiring potential employees to disclose their credit history as part of the job application process. It was previously thought that credit history may provide insight into an individual's character, but research has shown that an individual's credit rating has little to no correlation with his or her ability to be successful in the workplace. -- "A bad credit rating is far more often the result of unexpected medical costs, unemployment, economic downturns, or other bad breaks than it is a reflection on an individual's character or abilities," Senator Warren said.

You must not ever forget this incident at U.C. Davis: Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis. The militarization of our local police, the War on our Youth, the fascist oppression of peaceful assembly, protest and free speech in America. During peacefully Occupy Movement,(Nov. 2011) police came in to tear down tents and proceeded to arrest students who stood in their way. Once students peacefully demanded the release of the arrested, a police officer unnecessarily pepper sprays the students to open a path for the rest of the officers. -- The officer who sprayed the students was UC Davis Police Lt. John Pike. -- Notice all the other police just standing around watching, as if nothing abnormal or outrageous is happening. This is a day that will forever live in ignominy in America.
