This 'N ThatNon-violence is a very powerful weapon. Most people don't understand the power of non-violence and tend to be amazed by the whole idea. Those who have been involved in bringing about change and see the difference between violence and non-violence are firmly committed to a lifetime of non-violence, not because it is easy or because it is cowardly, but because it is an effective and very powerful way. - Cesar ChavezDust turned to hope. - Elie Weisel I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant. - Martin Luther King, Jr. True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power. Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it. - Milan Kundera Forge thy tongue on an anvil of truth and what flies up, though it be but a spark, will have light. - Pindar Believe those who are seeking the truth; doubt those who find it. - Andre Gide It belongs to the very substance of nonviolence never to destroy or damage another person's feeling of self worth, even an opponent's. We all need, constantly, an advance of trust and affirmation. - Bernard Haring Truly you have formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother's womb. I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made; wonderful are your works. - Psalm 13:9 In India when we meet and part we often say, "Namaste," which means: I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides; I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides; I honor the place in you of love, of light, of truth, of peace. I honor the place within you where if you are in that place in you and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us….. "Namaste." - Ram Dass Smiling is very important. If we are not able to smile, then the world will not have peace. It is not by going out for a demonstration against nuclear missiles that we can bring about peace. It is with our capacity of smiling, breathing, and being peace that we can make peace. - Thich Nhat Hanh Those for whom peace is no more than a dream are asleep to the future. - Jack DuVall I expect to pass through this world but once, therefore any good that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not come this way again. - Stephen Grellett 1773-1855 Taking the first footstep with a good thought, the second with a good word, and the third with a good deed, I entered paradise. - Zoroaster Thaw with her gentle persuasion is more powerful than Thor with his hammer. The one melts, the other breaks into pieces. - Henry David Thoreau Past the seeker as he prayed came the crippled and the beggar and the beaten. And seeing them...he cried, "Great God, how is it that a loving creator can see such things and yet do nothing about them?"...God said, "I did do something. I made you." - Sufi Teaching Very few people chose war. They chose selfishness and the result was war. Each of us, individually and nationally, must choose: total love or total war. - Dave Dellinger The question is not, do we go to church; the question is, have we been converted. The crux of Christianity is not whether or not we give donations to popular charities but whether or not we are really committed to the poor. - Joan Chittester, OSB Everything, everything in war is barbaric . . . But the worst barbarity of war is that it forces men collectively to commit acts against which individually they would revolt with their whole being. - Ellen Key, 1916 If Columbus had an advisory committee he would probably still be at the dock. - Justice Arthur Goldberg The governors of the world believe, and have always believed, that virtue can only be taught by teaching falsehood, and that any man who knew the truth would be wicked. I disbelieve this, absolutely and entirely. I believe that love of truth is the basis of all real virtue, and that virtues based upon lies can only do harm. - Bertrand Russell If we work in marble, it will perish; if we work upon brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds and instill into them just principles, we are then engraving upon tablets which no time will efface, but will brighten and brighten to all eternity. - Daniel Webster When nothing seems to help, I go look at a stonecutter hammering away at a rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundredth blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it but all that had gone before. - Jacob Riis When asked what he would do if he knew the world would end tomorrow, Martin Luther said, "I would plant a tree." - Martin Luther Those who are ready to sacrifice freedom for security ultimately will lose both. - Abraham Lincoln The first essential characteristics of nonviolent action is that it is creative. - Hildegarde Goss-Mayr Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess. - Oscar Wilde For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love. - Pythagoras The idea of absolute freedom is fiction. It's based on the idea of an independent self. But, in fact, there's no such thing. There's no self without other people. There's no self without sunlight. There's no self without dew. And water. And bees to pollinate the food we eat....So the idea of behaving in a way that doesn't acknowledge those reciprocal relationships is not really freedom, it's indulgence. - Peter Coyote It is not your obligation to complete your work, but you are not at liberty to quit. - Talmud Until lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunters. - African Proverb Sometime in your life, hope that you might see one starved man, the look on his face when the bread finally arrives. Hope that you might have baked it or bought or even kneaded it yourself. For that look on his face, for your meeting his eyes across a piece of bread, you might be willing to lose a lot, or suffer a lot, or die a little, even. - Daniel Berrigan, SJ All violence consists in some people forcing others, under threat of suffering or death, to do what the do not want to do. - Leo Tolstoy You can no more win a war than win an earthquake. - Jeanette Rankin We are going to have to find ways of organizing ourselves cooperatively, sanely, scientifically, harmonically and in regenerative spontaneity with the rest of humanity around the earth.... We are not going to be able to operate our spaceship earth successfully nor for much longer unless we see it as a whole spaceship and our fate as common. - Buckminster Fuller Nonviolence which is a quality of the heart, cannot come by an appeal to the brain. - Mahatma Gandhi |

The Folly of Empire: The last days of civilization Article America has a modern day Jeremiah prophet. His name is Chris Hedges, former reporter for the New York Times. His admonition is bleak and hopelessness. "The last days of empire are carnivals of folly. We are in the midst of our own, plunging forward as our leaders court willful economic and environmental self-destruction. Sumer and Rome went down like this. -- A nation that was still rooted in reality would never glorify charlatans such as Sen. Ted Cruz, House Speaker John Boehner and former Speaker Newt Gingrich as they pollute the airwaves. If we had any idea what was really happening to us we would have turned in fury against Barack Obama, whose signature legacy will be utter capitulation to the demands of Wall Street, the fossil fuel industry, the military-industrial complex and the security and surveillance state. Our collapse will take the whole planet with it.
