Journalist Glenn Greenwald and Guardian US editor-in-chief Janine Gibson on Tuesday afternoon participated in a 90 minute live Q&A -- What would you say is the single most shocking revelation that Snowden has leaked and why? -- ANSWER, BY Glenn Greenwald: "The general revelation that the objective of the NSA is literally the elimination of global privacy: ensuring that every form of human electronic communication - not just those of The Terrorists™ - is collected, stored, analyzed and monitored." Admiral Gene Larocque Speaks
Monday, 11/11/2013
Today is Veterans Day. This is a sober reminder from Admiral General Larocque who very bluntly states the truth about the terrible criminality, waste and futility of war. -- "He gave his life for his country." Nobody gives their life for anything. We steal the lives of these kids. We take it away from them. They don't die for the honor and glory of their country. We kill them. (1985)

This 'N That

If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.
- Bishop Desmond Tutu

Men are so accustomed to maintaining external order by violence that they cannot conceive of life being possible without violence.
- Leo Tolstoy

Being a pacifist between wars is as easy as being a vegetarian between meals.
- Ammon Hennacy, US Labor leader

If it's natural to kill, how come men have to go into training to learn how?
- Joan Baez

Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.
- Albert Einstein

Only in the last moment in history has the delusion arisen that people can flourish apart from the rest of the living world.
- E.O. Wilson

Freedom is actually a bigger game than power. Power is about what you can control. Freedom is about what you can unleash.
- Harriet Rubin

Violence just hurts those who are already hurt...Instead of exposing the brutality of the oppressor, it justifies it.
- Cesar Chavez

Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds them. We live by the death of others. We are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.
- Leonardo Da Vinci

No one is so foolish as to prefer to peace, war, in which, instead of sons burying their fathers, fathers bury their sons.
- Croesus, King of Lydia, in Herodotus' The Persian Wars

For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.
- Pythagoras

There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root."
- Henry David Thoreau, Walden

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.
- Alvin Toffler

No, the Lord has told us what is good. What he requires of us is this: to do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with our God.
- Micah 6:8

And then to each other.
- Richard Goode

What all men fear, I too must fear - how barren and pointless a thought!
- Tao Te Ching

There is no time left for anything but to make peace work a dimension of our every waking activity.
- Elise Boulding

We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace.
- Gladstone

There is nothing more agreeable in life than to make peace with the establishment and nothing more corrupting.
- Unknown

Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace.
- Luke 19:42

We may never be strong enough to be entirely nonviolent in thought, word and deed. But we must keep nonviolence as our goal and make strong progress towards it. The Attainment of freedom, whether for a person, a nation or a world, must be in exact proportion to the attainment of nonviolence for each.
- Mohandas Gandhi

Hitler and Mussolini were only the primary spokesmen for the attitude of domination and craving for power that are in the heart of almost everyone. Until the source is cleared, there will always be confusion and hate, wars and class antagonisms.
- J. Krishnamurti

Violence in the voice is often only the death rattle of reason in the throat.
- John Boyes

Gandhi once declared that it was his wife who unwittingly taught him the effectiveness of nonviolence. Who better than women should know that battles can be won without resort to physical strength? Who better than we should know all the power that resides in noncooperation?
- Barbara Deming

Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction.
- Albert Einstein

There is no such thing as defeat in non-violence.
- Cesar Chavez

Instead of tug o' war, let's play hug o' war.
- Shel Silverstein

That's all nonviolence is - organized love.
- Joan Baez

When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it?
- Eleanor Roosevelt

Angry heart -- you have no chance against my prayers.
- Mary Moreno

If you succumb to the temptation of using violence in the struggle, unborn generations will be the recipients of a long and desolate night of bitterness, and your chief legacy to the future will be an endless reign of meaningless chaos.
- Martin Luther King Jr.

It is reasonable that every one who asks justice should do justice.
- Thomas Jefferson

The destiny of humans cannot be separated from the destiny of earth.
- Thomas Berry

The Folly of Empire: The last days of civilization
Article
America has a modern day Jeremiah prophet. His name is Chris Hedges, former reporter for the New York Times. His admonition is bleak and hopelessness. "The last days of empire are carnivals of folly. We are in the midst of our own, plunging forward as our leaders court willful economic and environmental self-destruction. Sumer and Rome went down like this. -- A nation that was still rooted in reality would never glorify charlatans such as Sen. Ted Cruz, House Speaker John Boehner and former Speaker Newt Gingrich as they pollute the airwaves. If we had any idea what was really happening to us we would have turned in fury against Barack Obama, whose signature legacy will be utter capitulation to the demands of Wall Street, the fossil fuel industry, the military-industrial complex and the security and surveillance state. Our collapse will take the whole planet with it.

Close the N.S.A.’s Back Doors - EDITORIAL NYT
Article
The New York Times, The Guardian and ProPublica recently reported that the N.S.A now has access to the codes that protect commerce and banking systems, trade secrets and medical records, and everyone's e-mail and Internet chat messages, including virtual private networks. In some cases, the agency pressured companies to give it access ... a bill for legal protection has been submitted.

Solar Power is as Cheap as Gas-Coal Plants Closing
News
The cost of renewable energy is now so low that coal is uncompetitive before taking into account the huge environmental costs of burning coal. Colorado's CO2 emissions are being slashed at no cost to consumers. Years of government and private investment are paying off. In Hawaii, home solar power is so cheap compared to purchased power that installing a solar power system pays for itself in under 3 years.

San Onofre a toxic wasteland for decades to come
News
Letter to the Editor: "Many who live in the shadow of San Onofre are under the impression that the plant is closed just because it no longer produces electricity. Those who went to the recent NRC meeting in Carlsbad were shocked to learn that decommissioning may take 50-60 years. ... spent fuel rods will remain in cooling pools until about 2030. By the way, the term "spent fuel" is highly misleading. It means only that the fuel rods are no longer economically efficient. The uranium is still very much alive and dangerous: it has a half-life of 704 million years and will become hazard-free in 10 half-lives (over 70 million years)."

CA takes huge steps forward on reproductive rights
News
Over the past several months, California has bucked the national trend and proposed a rash of new legislation to protect women’s health. As other states across the country are launching a coordinated attack against abortion access, the Golden State is taking the direct opposite approach. -- The first new law will allow a wider pool of medical professionals to perform abortions, helping to address the state's current abortion provider shortage. The second will eliminate unnecessary and burdensome regulations on abortion clinics, ensuring that clinics won't be forced to close because they can't adhere to harsh standards that don't actually have anything to do with patient safety.

The White House invited sixteen-year-old Pakistani women's rights activist Malala Yousafzai to meet the President, First Lady, and their daughter Malia on Friday. The youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize contender made the most of the photo opportunity, warning Obama that U.S. drone strikes were fueling terrorist attacks.

France’s Ban On Fracking Is ‘Absolute’
News
France's ban on fracking was finally completed Friday, as its constitutional court upheld a 2011 law prohibiting the practice and canceling all exploration permits. France has ambitious goals for a low-carbon future and is currently considering a tax on carbon emissions and a nuclear tax. Revenue would go to renewables and energy efficiency standards. France plans to cut fossil fuel use by 30 percent by 2030, at the same time that it de-emphasizes the nuclear power that provides three quarters of the nation's energy.

Shameless: Tea Party hijacks Veterans DC protest
News
Bizarre political theater played out this weekend in D.C., where about a thousand veterans rallied to protest the government shutdown of veterans' memorials-- an event unexpectedly, shamelessly, photogenetically hijacked by Ted Cruz and Sarah Palin, neither of whom are veterans and both of whom supported (and in Cruz' case largely orchestrated) the shutdown they were now loudly protesting.

Manning Video:American troops slaughter civilians

Video depicts a US Apache attack helicopter killing 12 civilians and wounding two children on the ground in Baghdad in 2007. The helicopter then fired on and killed the people trying to rescue the wounded. Finally, a US tank drove over one of the bodies, cutting the man in half. These acts constitute three separate war crimes. All with calloused video-game contempt for human life. - Manning fulfilled his legal duty to report war crimes. He complied with his legal duty to obey lawful orders but also his legal duty to disobey unlawful orders. -- The Army covered up the evidence and declared the war crime "justified". Now they say that exposing the massacre is criminal.
