Being a pacifist between wars is as easy as being a vegetarian between meals. If it's natural to kill, how come men have to go into training to learn how? Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence. Only in the last moment in history has the delusion arisen that people can flourish apart from the rest of the living world. Freedom is actually a bigger game than power. Power is about what you can control. Freedom is about what you can unleash. Violence just hurts those who are already hurt...Instead of exposing the brutality of the oppressor, it justifies it. Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds them. We live by the death of others. We are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men. No one is so foolish as to prefer to peace, war, in which, instead of sons burying their fathers, fathers bury their sons. For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love. There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root." The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. No, the Lord has told us what is good. What he requires of us is this: to do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with our God. And then to each other. What all men fear, I too must fear - how barren and pointless a thought! There is no time left for anything but to make peace work a dimension of our every waking activity. We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace. There is nothing more agreeable in life than to make peace with the establishment and nothing more corrupting. Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him. Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace. We may never be strong enough to be entirely nonviolent in thought, word and deed. But we must keep nonviolence as our goal and make strong progress towards it. The Attainment of freedom, whether for a person, a nation or a world, must be in exact proportion to the attainment of nonviolence for each. Hitler and Mussolini were only the primary spokesmen for the attitude of domination and craving for power that are in the heart of almost everyone. Until the source is cleared, there will always be confusion and hate, wars and class antagonisms. Violence in the voice is often only the death rattle of reason in the throat. Gandhi once declared that it was his wife who unwittingly taught him the effectiveness of nonviolence. Who better than women should know that battles can be won without resort to physical strength? Who better than we should know all the power that resides in noncooperation? Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction. There is no such thing as defeat in non-violence. Instead of tug o' war, let's play hug o' war. That's all nonviolence is - organized love. When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it? Angry heart -- you have no chance against my prayers. If you succumb to the temptation of using violence in the struggle, unborn generations will be the recipients of a long and desolate night of bitterness, and your chief legacy to the future will be an endless reign of meaningless chaos. It is reasonable that every one who asks justice should do justice. Video depicts a US Apache attack helicopter killing 12 civilians and wounding two children on the ground in Baghdad in 2007. The helicopter then fired on and killed the people trying to rescue the wounded. Finally, a US tank drove over one of the bodies, cutting the man in half. These acts constitute three separate war crimes. All with calloused video-game contempt for human life. - Manning fulfilled his legal duty to report war crimes. He complied with his legal duty to obey lawful orders but also his legal duty to disobey unlawful orders. -- The Army covered up the evidence and declared the war crime "justified". Now they say that exposing the massacre is criminal.
