Through Gandhi and my own life experience, I have learned about nonviolence. I believe that human life is a very special gift from God, and that no one has a right to take that away in any cause, however just. I am convinced that nonviolence is more powerful than violence. I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones. War does not determine who is right - only who is left It is reasonable that every one who asks justice should do justice. I'm not disturbing the peace. I'm disturbing the war. I expect to pass through this world but once, therefore any good that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not come this way again. The peace process we all aim for will not necessarily be a result of the mere signing of a treaty or agreement. It must become a matter of our everyday lives, so that peace settles and lasts and becomes supported by everybody. We therefore have to give peace all the required care and preserve it and promote it. Do you want long life and happiness? Strive for peace with all your heart. Activism pays the rent on being alive and being here on the planet. If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea. When I have money, I get rid of it quickly, lest it find a way into my heart. Believe those who are seeking the truth; doubt those who find it. Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. Plans to protect air and water, wilderness and wildlife are in fact plans to protect man. What good is it to me that Mary gave birth to the son of God fourteen hundred years ago, and I do not also give birth to the Son of God in my time and in my culture? We are all meant to be mothers of God. God is always needing to be born. Our friends show us what we can do; our enemies teach us what we must do. Dust turned to hope. Violence produces only something resembling justice, but it distances people from the possibility of living justly, without violence. Poetry is an act of peace. Peace goes into the making of a poet as flour goes into the making of bread. You save your soul by saving someone else's body. The dark night is over and dawn has begun. Rise, hope of the ages, arise like the sun! All speech, flow to music; all hearts, beat as one. Dust turned to hope. Sports plays a societal role in engendering jingoist and chauvinist attitudes. They're designed to organize a community to be committed to their gladiators. When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall -- think of it, ALWAYS! Do your work as though you had a thousand years to live, & as if you were to die tomorrow. The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways: the point is to change it. It is in the shelter of each other that the people live. Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of humans as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is not safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. Peace is not a relationship of nations. It is a condition of mind brought about by a serenity of soul. Peace is not merely an absence of war. It is also a state of mind. Lasting peace can come only to peaceful people. I do not believe in using women in combat, because females are too fierce. The two kinds of people who exist in this world [at any one time] are the decent and the indecent. Color, religion and nationality are irrelevant. Kindness, decency and behavior are what matters most. Our collective challenge, it seems, is to create a city and community where decent people of all races, ethnicities and religions can look into the faces of other decent people and see only one thing -- God's image smiling back. It is penance to work, to give oneself to others, to endure the pinpricks of community living. I really see no other solution than to turn inwards and to root out all the rottenness there. I no longer believe that we can change anything in the world until we first change ourselves. And that seems to me the only lesson to be learned from this war. We must have research for peace ... It would embrace the outstanding problems of morality. The time has come for man's intellect, his scientific method, to win over the immoral brutality and irrationality of war and militarism ... Now we are forced to eliminate from the world forever this vestige of prehistoric barbarism, this curse to the human race. We challenge the culture of violence when we ourselves act in the certainty that violence is no longer acceptable, that it's tired and outdated no matter how many cling to it in the stubborn belief that it still works and that it's still valid. Only when there are many people who are pools of peace, silence, understanding, will war disappear. The first question which the priest and the Levite asked [on the Jericho Road] was: ‘If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?' But...the good Samaritan reversed the question: ‘If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?' A bad peace is even worse than war. The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality. When men talk about defense, they always claim to be protecting women and children, but they never ask the women and children what they think. If there is to be any peace it will come through being, not having. In the twilight of life, God will not judge us on our earthly possessions and human success, but rather on how much we have loved. In the struggle rewards are few. In the fact, I know of only two, loving friends and living dreams. These rewards are not so few it seems. A good end sanctify evil means; not must we ever do evil, that good might come of it. We are ready to retaliate, rather than forgive or gain by love and information . . . Force may subdue, but love gains. And one that forgives first wins the laurel. I have great belief in the fact that whenever there is chaos, it creates wonderful thinking. I consider chaos a gift. The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life. Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction. A peace that comes from fear and not from the heart is the opposite of peace. Peace is a gift, To save one life, it is as if you had saved the world. Peace we want because there is another war to fight against poverty, disease and ignorance. Mounting an expedition to actualize a Compassionate Commonwealth of all peoples...is the great spiritual challenge of our time. I am done with great things and big things, great institutions and big success, and I am for those tiny invisible molecular moral forces that work from individual to individual, creeping through the crannies of the world like so many rootlets, or like the capillary oozing of water, yet which if you give them time, will rend the hardest monuments of man's pride. What all men fear, I too must fear - how barren and pointless a thought! We do not inherit the earth from our fathers. We borrow it from our children. The pursuit of peace and progress cannot end in a few years in either victory or defeat. The pursuit of peace and progress, with its trials and errors, its successes and setbacks, can never be relaxed and never abandoned. The law of violence is not a law, but a simple fact which can only be a law when it does not meet with protest and opposition. Iraq war veteran Emily Yates was arrested on Friday after a dispute with police about where she could stand while playing her banjo during a protest against U.S. military action in Syria. -- Video uploaded to Live Leak shows Yates asking Federal Parks Police why she could not stand in a shaded area of Independence Mall in Philadelphia. -- After several minutes of discussion, two officers bent Yates over a park bench and handcuffed her. -- "We live in a police state,” she shouts! “We live in a f*cking police state! They’re damaging my body and my personal property! I went to war for this country! Stop manhandling me! Stop! Stop! Help! Help!" -- By the time Yates is dragged from the park, at least eight officers are participating in the arrest. -- A web page claiming to be the "Emily Yates Defense Fund" insisted that the activist "was not engaged in any illegal activity and was not told why she was being attacked." -- "While she was busy playing a song, park rangers accosted her. When she demanded an explanation for their aggression, they pinned her onto a park bench and dragged her off to an undisclosed location," according to the website. Following the announcement of Chelsea (Bradley) Manning's sentence of 35 years in military prison, Manning’s civilian defense attorney read a statement from Manning, which will be included in a filing requesting a pardon from President Barack Obama. -- Coombs also described what Manning was like after the sentence was announced. He recounted how he and his other defense attorneys had been crying. Manning looked at him and said, "It's okay. It’s alright. I know you did your best. I'm going to be okay. Only in a Police State - No one seems to know why 44-year-old Michael Ruiz was on the roof of his apartment building on July 28th, but when Phoenix police arrived to help him down, that day took a horrific turn for the worse. -- This video is hard to watch. It shows Ruiz on the roof of his apartment complex, and after he jumps down, police officers converge and repeatedly Taser him, put him in a choke hold for at least three minutes, then finally his hands and feet were handcuffed, and he is dragged -- face down -- down a flight of concrete stairs. Some witnesses say they saw police use a stun gun on Michael several times while he was still on the roof. -- Many of Michael's neighbors witnessed everything and recorded it all on their phones. Video depicts a US Apache attack helicopter killing 12 civilians and wounding two children on the ground in Baghdad in 2007. The helicopter then fired on and killed the people trying to rescue the wounded. Finally, a US tank drove over one of the bodies, cutting the man in half. These acts constitute three separate war crimes. All with calloused video-game contempt for human life. - Manning fulfilled his legal duty to report war crimes. He complied with his legal duty to obey lawful orders but also his legal duty to disobey unlawful orders. -- The Army covered up the evidence and declared the war crime "justified".
