Behind it, yet within reach, is joy. There is radiance and glory in the darkness, could we but see, and to see, we have only to look. I beseech you to look. That's all nonviolence is - organized love. Peace comes from being able to contribute the best that we have, and all that we are, toward creating a world that supports everyone. But it is also securing the space for others to contibute the best that they have and all that they are. The world cannot continue to wage war like physical giants and to seek peace like intellectual pygmies Peace begins when the hungry are fed. Teach this triple truth to all: A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity. If we don't stop the bomb who will take care of the flowers? Nonviolence doesn't always work -- but violence never does. The idea of absolute freedom is fiction. It's based on the idea of an independent self. But, in fact, there's no such thing. There's no self without other people. There's no self without sunlight. There's no self without dew. And water. And bees to pollinate the food we eat....So the idea of behaving in a way that doesn't acknowledge those reciprocal relationships is not really freedom, it's indulgence. Aye, fight! But not your neighbor. Fight rather all the things that cause you and your neighbor to fight. If we could raise one generation with unconditional love, there would be no Hitlers. We need to teach the next generation of children from Day One that they are responsible for their lives. Mankind's greatest gift, also its greatest curse, is that we have free choice. We can make our choices built from love or from fear.. The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens. I expect to pass through this world but once, therefore any good that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not come this way again. Only the poor knew the meaning of life; the rich and the safe had to guess. It is penance to work, to give oneself to others, to endure the pinpricks of community living. I plan to stand by nonviolence, because I have found it to be a philosophy of life that regulates not only my dealings in the struggle for racial justice, but also my dealings with people, and with my own self. Forge thy tongue on an anvil of truth and what flies up, though it be but a spark, will have light. We are going to have to find ways of organizing ourselves cooperatively,sanely, scientifically, harmonically and in regenerative spontaneity with the rest of humanity around the earth.... We are not going to be able to operate our spaceship earth successfully nor for much longer unless we see it as a whole spaceship and our fate as common. Sports plays a societal role in engendering jingoist and chauvinist attitudes. They're designed to organize a community to be committed to their gladiators. Conflict is inevitable, but combat is optional. Warmaking doesn't stop warmaking. If it did, our problems would have stopped millennia ago. If I can't dance I don't want to be part of your revolution. The poor cannot be convinced that God is neutral . . . Only when there are many people who are pools of peace, silence, understanding, will war disappear. You save your soul by saving someone else's body. Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. God grant me the courage to change the things I can, the patience to accept the things I can't, and the wisdom to know the difference. A great many people think they are thinking when they are just rearranging their prejudices. In 1989, thirteen nations comprising 1,695,000 people experienced nonviolent revolutions that succeeded beyond anyone's wildest expectations . . . If we add all the countries touched by major nonviolent actions in our century (the Philippines, South Africa . . . the independence movement in India . . .) the figure reaches 3,337,400,000, a staggering 65% of humanity! All this in the teeth of the assertion, endlessly repeated, that nonviolence doesn't work in the 'real' world. Past the seeker as he prayed came the crippled and the beggar and the beaten. And seeing them...he cried, "Great God, how is it that a loving creator can see such things and yet do nothing about them?"...God said, "I did do something. I made you." I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant. Those for whom peace is no more than a dream are asleep to the future. When the rich make war it's the poor that die. If it's natural to kill, how come men have to go into training to learn how? The human mind likes a strange idea as little as the body likes a strange protein and resists it with a similar energy. To resort to power one need not be violent, and to speak to conscience one need not be meek. The most effective action both resorts to power and engages conscience. Nonviolent actions does not have to get others to be nice. It can in effect force them to consult their consciences. Nor does it have to petition those in power to do something about a situation. It can face the authorities with a new fact and say: Accept this new situation which we have created. Compromise does not mean cowardice. The love of one's country is a splendid thing. But why should love stop at the border? In order to find the edge, you must risk going over the edge. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world: Indeed it's the only thing that ever has. When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it? The only thing that's been a worse flop than the organization of nonviolence has been the organization of violence. The point of nonviolence is to build a floor, a strong new floor, beneath which we can no longer sink. A platform which stands a few feet above napalm, torture, exploitation, poison gas, A and H bombs, the works. Give man a decent place to stand. Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace. I believe in compulsory cannibalism. If people were forced to eat what they killed there would be no more war. The destiny of humans cannot be separated from the destiny of earth. Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past. You see things; and you say, "Why?" But I dream things that never were; and I say, "Why not?" The pens which write against disarmament are made with the same steel from which guns are made. The two kinds of people who exist in this world [at any one time] are the decent and the indecent. Color, religion and nationality are irrelevant. Kindness, decency and behavior are what matters most. Our collective challenge, it seems, is to create a city and community where decent people of all races, ethnicities and religions can look into the faces of other decent people and see only one thing -- God's image smiling back. All we ask, God, is to be safe from the rain, just warm enough in winter to watch the snow with a smile, have enough to eat so that our hunger will not turn us to angry beasts, and sanity enough to make justice that will not kill our love of life. When nothing seems to help, I go look at a stonecutter hammering away at a rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundredth blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it but all that had gone before. The governors of the world believe, and have always believed, that virtue can only be taught by teaching falsehood, and that any man who knew the truth would be wicked. I disbelieve this, absolutely and entirely. I believe that love of truth is the basis of all real virtue, and that virtues based upon lies can only do harm. In April, we cannot see sunflowers in France, so we might say the sunflowers do not exist. But the local farmers have already planted thousands of seeds, and when they look at the bare hills, they may be able to see the sunflowers already. The sunflowers are there. They lack only the conditions of sun, heat, rain and July. Just because we cannot see them does not mean that they do not exist. The law, in its majestic equality, forbids both rich and poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread. You know, if people are not pacifists, it's not their fault. It's because society puts them in that spot. You've got to change it. You don't just change a man - you've got to change his environment as you do it. Aggressive conduct, if allowed to go unchecked and unchallenged, ultimately leads to war. Love the fellow of the resurrection, scooping up the dust and chanting "Live!" If you love the justice of Jesus Christ more than you fear human judgment then you will seek to do compassion. Compassion means that if I see my friend and my enemy in equal need, I shall help them both equally. Justice demands that we seek and find the stranger, the broken, the prisoner and comfort them and offer them our help. Here lies the holy compassion of God that causes the devils much distress. Until lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunters. The ultimate measure of a person is not where one stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where one stands in times of challenge and controversy. The peace process we all aim for will not necessarily be a result of the mere signing of a treaty or agreement. It must become a matter of our everyday lives, so that peace settles and lasts and becomes supported by everybody. 500 San Diego supporters rallied in Mission Bay for the national Climate Rally against the Keystone tar sands pipeline on Feb. 17, but the largest environmental rally in U.S. history was in Washington, DC with 50,000 people. Pres. Obama was down in Boca Raton, Florida, playing golf with a Texas oil magnate and Tiger Woods. He, like most of the media, tried to ignore our message. The Adminstration is seething that Manning blew the whistle on war crimes against humanity, and exposed the duplicity and incompetence of the State Department and the Pentagon. Rule 707 from the Manual for Courts Martial mandates, “The accused shall be brought to trial within 120 days after” being detained or presented with charges. Benjamin argued that Obama's drone policy "terrorizes entire nations," calling it the "best recruiting tool for extremists organizations" while hurting the safety of the United States. Williams grilled Benjamin on why it threatens Americans when the government sends out drones to take out dangerous terrorists. If Pfc. Bradley Manning is convicted of 'aiding the enemy,' it could be the end of whistleblowing as we know it in the United States Armed Forces. This video, entitled "Aiding the Enemy," is to raise awareness of the dangers posed to the American public by leveling this charge at Bradley Manning, and recruit people to our campaign urging Major General Michael Linnington to drop the charge immediately. Manning written testimony Feb. 2013: "The dehumanized the individuals they were engaging and seemed to not value human life by referring to them as quote “dead bastards” unquote and congratulating each other on the ability to kill in large numbers. At one point in the video there is an individual on the ground attempting to crawl to safety. The individual is seriously wounded. Instead of calling for medical attention to the location, one of the aerial weapons team crew members verbally asks for the wounded person to pick up a weapon so that he can have a reason to engage. For me, this seems similar to a child torturing ants with a magnifying glass. While saddened by the aerial weapons team crew’s lack of concern about human life, I was disturbed by the response of the discovery of injured children at the scene. In the video, you can see that the bongo truck driving up to assist the wounded individual. In response the aerial weapons team crew — as soon as the individuals are a threat, they repeatedly request for authorization to fire on the bongo truck and once granted they engage the vehicle at least six times. Shortly after the second engagement, a mechanized infantry unit arrives at the scene. Within minutes, the aerial weapons team crew learns that children were in the van and despite the injuries the crew exhibits no remorse. Instead, they downplay the significance of their actions, saying quote "Well, it's their fault for bringing their kids into a battle" unquote. -- The aerial weapons team crew members sound like they lack sympathy for the children or the parents. Later in a particularly disturbing manner, the aerial weapons team verbalizes enjoyment at the sight of one of the ground vehicles driving over a body -- or one of the bodies." San Diego's rally in support of the nationwide protest calling on President Obama to say no to the the Keystone XL Pipeline brought over 500 people to Mission Bay, as up to 50,000 rallied in Washington and many others around the country. The San Diego rally was organized by SanDiego350.org in collaboration with Citizens Climate Lobby, Sierra Club San Diego, Environmental Health Coalition, and Greenpeace.
