This 'N That

In every child who is born, no matter what circumstances, and of no matter what parents, the potentiality of the human race is born again: and in him, too, once more, and of each of us, our terrific responsibility toward human life; toward the utmost idea of goodness, of the horror of terror, and of God.
- James Agee

The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within reach, is joy. There is radiance and glory in the darkness, could we but see, and to see, we have only to look. I beseech you to look.
- From a letter written by Fra Giovanni, 1513

That's all nonviolence is - organized love.
- Joan Baez

Peace comes from being able to contribute the best that we have, and all that we are, toward creating a world that supports everyone. But it is also securing the space for others to contibute the best that they have and all that they are.
- Hafsat Abiola

The world cannot continue to wage war like physical giants and to seek peace like intellectual pygmies

If we don't stop the bomb who will take care of the flowers?
- Neil J. Seattle, Age 9

Nonviolence doesn't always work -- but violence never does.
- Madge Michaels-Cyrus

The idea of absolute freedom is fiction. It's based on the idea of an independent self. But, in fact, there's no such thing. There's no self without other people. There's no self without sunlight. There's no self without dew. And water. And bees to pollinate the food we eat....So the idea of behaving in a way that doesn't acknowledge those reciprocal relationships is not really freedom, it's indulgence.
- Peter Coyote

Aye, fight! But not your neighbor. Fight rather all the things that cause you and your neighbor to fight.
- Mikhail Naim

If we could raise one generation with unconditional love, there would be no Hitlers. We need to teach the next generation of children from Day One that they are responsible for their lives. Mankind's greatest gift, also its greatest curse, is that we have free choice. We can make our choices built from love or from fear..
- Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross

The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens.
- Baha'ullah

I expect to pass through this world but once, therefore any good that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not come this way again.
- Stephen Grellett 1773-1855

Only the poor knew the meaning of life; the rich and the safe had to guess.
- Charles Bukowsky

It is penance to work, to give oneself to others, to endure the pinpricks of community living.
- Dorothy Day

I plan to stand by nonviolence, because I have found it to be a philosophy of life that regulates not only my dealings in the struggle for racial justice, but also my dealings with people, and with my own self.
- Martin Luther King Jr.

Forge thy tongue on an anvil of truth and what flies up, though it be but a spark, will have light.
- Pindar

We are going to have to find ways of organizing ourselves cooperatively, sanely, scientifically, harmonically and in regenerative spontaneity with the rest of humanity around the earth.... We are not going to be able to operate our spaceship earth successfully nor for much longer unless we see it as a whole spaceship and our fate as common.

Only when there are many people who are pools of peace, silence, understanding, will war disappear.
- Osho (1931-1990)

You save your soul by saving someone else's body.
- Arthur Hertzberg

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
- Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969)

God grant me the courage to change the things I can, the patience to accept the things I can't, and the wisdom to know the difference.
- The Serenity Prayer

A great many people think they are thinking when they are just rearranging their prejudices.
- William James

In 1989, thirteen nations comprising 1,695,000 people experienced nonviolent revolutions that succeeded beyond anyone's wildest expectations . . . If we add all the countries touched by major nonviolent actions in our century (the Philippines, South Africa . . . the independence movement in India . . .) the figure reaches 3,337,400,000, a staggering 65% of humanity! All this in the teeth of the assertion, endlessly repeated, that nonviolence doesn't work in the 'real' world.
- Walter Wink

Past the seeker as he prayed came the crippled and the beggar and the beaten. And seeing them...he cried, "Great God, how is it that a loving creator can see such things and yet do nothing about them?"...God said, "I did do something. I made you."
- Sufi Teaching

I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.

- Joan Baez

The human mind likes a strange idea as little as the body likes a strange protein and resists it with a similar energy.
- W.H. Beveridge, British Economist

To resort to power one need not be violent, and to speak to conscience one need not be meek. The most effective action both resorts to power and engages conscience. Nonviolent actions does not have to get others to be nice. It can in effect force them to consult their consciences. Nor does it have to petition those in power to do something about a situation. It can face the authorities with a new fact and say: Accept this new situation which we have created.
- Barbara Deming

- Margaret Mead

When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it?
- Eleanor Roosevelt

The only thing that's been a worse flop than the organization of nonviolence has been the organization of violence.
- Joan Baez

The point of nonviolence is to build a floor, a strong new floor, beneath which we can no longer sink. A platform which stands a few feet above napalm, torture, exploitation, poison gas, A and H bombs, the works. Give man a decent place to stand.
- Joan Baez

Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace.
- Luke 19:42

I believe in compulsory cannibalism. If people were forced to eat what they killed there would be no more war.
- Abbie Hoffman

The destiny of humans cannot be separated from the destiny of earth.
- Thomas Berry

Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.

The pens which write against disarmament are made with the same steel from which guns are made.
- Aristide Briand, French statesman, Nobel Peace Prize, 1926

The two kinds of people who exist in this world [at any one time] are the decent and the indecent. Color, religion and nationality are irrelevant. Kindness, decency and behavior are what matters most. Our collective challenge, it seems, is to create a city and community where decent people of all races, ethnicities and religions can look into the faces of other decent people and see only one thing -- God's image smiling back.
- Rabbi Micah Greenstein

All we ask, God, is to be safe from the rain, just warm enough in winter to watch the snow with a smile, have enough to eat so that our hunger will not turn us to angry beasts, and sanity enough to make justice that will not kill our love of life.
- Joseph Pinatauro

When nothing seems to help, I go look at a stonecutter hammering away at a rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundredth blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it but all that had gone before.
- Jacob Riis

The governors of the world believe, and have always believed, that virtue can only be taught by teaching falsehood, and that any man who knew the truth would be wicked. I disbelieve this, absolutely and entirely. I believe that love of truth is the basis of all real virtue, and that virtues based upon lies can only do harm.
- Bertrand Russell

In April, we cannot see sunflowers in France, so we might say the sunflowers do not exist. But the local farmers have already planted thousands of seeds, and when they look at the bare hills, they may be able to see the sunflowers already. The sunflowers are there. They lack only the conditions of sun, heat, rain and July. Just because we cannot see them does not mean that they do not exist.
- Thich Nhat Hanh

The law, in its majestic equality, forbids both rich and poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.
- Anatole France

You know, if people are not pacifists, it's not their fault. It's because society puts them in that spot. You've got to change it. You don't just change a man - you've got to change his environment as you do it.
- Cesar Chavez

Aggressive conduct, if allowed to go unchecked and unchallenged, ultimately leads to war.
- John F. Kennedy

Love the fellow of the resurrection, scooping up the dust and chanting "Live!"
- Emily Dickinson

If you love the justice of Jesus Christ more than you fear human judgment then you will seek to do compassion. Compassion means that if I see my friend and my enemy in equal need, I shall help them both equally. Justice demands that we seek and find the stranger, the broken, the prisoner and comfort them and offer them our help. Here lies the holy compassion of God that causes the devils much distress.
- Mechtild of Magdeburg

Until lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunters.
- African Proverb

The ultimate measure of a person is not where one stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where one stands in times of challenge and controversy.
- Martin Luther King

The peace process we all aim for will not necessarily be a result of the mere signing of a treaty or agreement. It must become a matter of our everyday lives, so that peace settles and lasts and becomes supported by everybody. We therefore have to give peace all the required care and preserve it and promote it.

Soldier in prison 1,000 days without trial
Article
Bradley Manning, the young army private who allegedly disclosed the Wikileaks files, must be given a fair, open and speedy trial. He has been held over three years, often in solitary and inhumane conditions. He has been convicted of no crime. This is simply and self-evidently wrong. -- Bradley Manning, convicted of no crime, is in his third year of incarceration. He spent part of the first year in a literal cage in Kuwait, followed by a year or more in custody where he was stripped of his clothing, not allowed contact with any humans besides his jailers and constantly mocked, ridiculed a and taunted, all without any review, due process or opportunity to rebut the accusations against him. A special, heartfelt THANK YOU! message to all the great people who packed the house to overflowing at the Carlsbad Planning Commission hearing on Feb. 20! You were all magnificent! Opponents of developing the Quarry Creek panhandle spread the word and got people to the hearing, sat or stood for hours, and then shared their stories about why this area needs to be preserved and what needs to be fixed with this project. It has been a long effort to get to this point. All of us at Preserve Calavera thank you, and so do the plants and wildlife of this very special valley.

Pfc Manning's full written statement in court
News
A transcription of the soldier's statement, read in court, explaining why he leaked state secrets to Wikileaks By Alexa O'Brien, SALON.com -- This is an historic document, equal to principles that came from the Nuremberg Nazi trials at the end of World War II. That a 22 year old soldier could write such a profound statement, and that he at age 19 could make the moral leap to jeopardize his life for the honor of his nation by leaking these documents, is testimony to the moral power of a single common man who simply does what is right because he followed his inner moral compass. OBAMA: Keystone pipeline will be a good thing
News
THE GREAT BETRAYAL, Act I - Keystone XL Pipeline Receives Major Boost From Obama Administration.President Obama approved the lower portion of Keystone XL late last year. There is some two-faced lying in the White House. "We're mystified as to how the State Department can acknowledge the negative effects of the Earth's dirtiest oil on our climate, but at the same time claim that the proposed pipeline will 'not likely result in significant adverse environmental effects.' Whether this failure was willful or accidental, this report is nothing short of malpractice.

Obama turned deaf ear to environmentalists

500 San Diego supporters rallied in Mission Bay for the national Climate Rally against the Keystone tar sands pipeline on Feb. 17, but the largest environmental rally in U.S. history was in Washington, DC with 50,000 people. Pres. Obama was down in Boca Raton, Florida, playing golf with a Texas oil magnate and Tiger Woods. He, like most of the media, tried to ignore our message.

Is killing innocent people a war crime?

Williams pointed to comments by Professor Cornel West calling Obama a "war criminal." Williams asked Benjamin if she agrees with West. Benjamin argued that Obama's drone policy "terrorizes entire nations," calling it the "best recruiting tool for extremists organizations" while hurting the safety of the United States. Williams grilled Benjamin on why it threatens Americans when the government sends out drones to take out dangerous terrorists. Benjamin highlighted the innocents killed by the drone strikes, arguing that every time a drone kills an innocent person, more people will start joining al-Qaeda. Williams told Benjamin what she's saying is "not true,"

Did San Onofre Violate Federal Securities Law?
News
WASHINGTON (February 21, 2013) – Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) today raised the possibility that the utility in charge of the San Onofre nuclear power plant in southern California may have violated federal securities laws by failing to publicly report safety information to investors. Markey says investors do not appear to have been fully and accurately informed of design flaws found by Southern California Edison and Mitsubishi in advance of the replacement of parts of the plant, and that SoCal Edison decided to reject recommended safety modifications for fear that they would be required to undertake a new license process before the parts could be installed.

PFC Manning - Aiding the enemy or American public?

If Pfc. Bradley Manning is convicted of 'aiding the enemy,' it could be the end of whistleblowing as we know it in the United States Armed Forces. This video, entitled "Aiding the Enemy," is to raise awareness of the dangers posed to the American public by leveling this charge at Bradley Manning, and recruit people to our campaign urging Major General Michael Linnington to drop the charge immediately.
Manning written testimony Feb. 2013: "The dehumanized the individuals they were engaging and seemed to not value human life by referring to them as quote “dead bastards” unquote and congratulating each other on the ability to kill in large numbers. At one point in the video there is an individual on the ground attempting to crawl to safety. The individual is seriously wounded. Instead of calling for medical attention to the location, one of the aerial weapons team crew members verbally asks for the wounded person to pick up a weapon so that he can have a reason to engage. For me, this seems similar to a child torturing ants with a magnifying glass. While saddened by the aerial weapons team crew’s lack of concern about human life, I was disturbed by the response of the discovery of injured children at the scene. In the video, you can see that the bongo truck driving up to assist the wounded individual. In response the aerial weapons team crew — as soon as the individuals are a threat, they repeatedly request for authorization to fire on the bongo truck and once granted they engage the vehicle at least six times. Shortly after the second engagement, a mechanized infantry unit arrives at the scene. Within minutes, the aerial weapons team crew learns that children were in the van and despite the injuries the crew exhibits no remorse. Instead, they downplay the significance of their actions, saying quote "Well, it's their fault for bringing their kids into a battle" unquote. -- The aerial weapons team crew members sound like they lack sympathy for the children or the parents. Later in a particularly disturbing manner, the aerial weapons team verbalizes enjoyment at the sight of one of the ground vehicles driving over a body -- or one of the bodies."

Manning case could be end of Freedom of Press

If Pfc. Bradley Manning is convicted of 'aiding the enemy,' it could be the end of whistleblowing as we know it in the United States Armed Forces. We made this YouTube advertisement titled, "Aiding the Enemy," to raise awareness of the dangers posed to the American public by leveling this charge at Bradley Manning, and recruit people to our campaign urging Major General Michael Linnington to drop the charge immediately.

Tearful plea to congess to stop gun massacres

Neil Heslin, the father of a six-year-old boy who was slain in the Sandy Hook massacre in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14, holds a picture of himself with his son Jesse and wipes his eye while testifying on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, before the Senate Judiciary Committee on the Assault Weapons Ban of 2013. After weeks of arguing constitutional fine points and citing rival statistics, senators wrangling over gun control saw and heard the anguish of a bereft father. -- "I'm not here for the sympathy or the pat on the back," Heslin, a 50-year-old construction worker, told the senators, weeping openly during much of his hushed 11-minute testimony. "I'm here to speak up for my son."
