Bill Clinton re-ignites progressive spirit of Ariz
With the "papers please" provision of Arizona's controversial SB 1070 immigration law now in effect, Bill Clinton roused an overflowing crowd at Arizona State University last week with a special shout out to the state's "dreamers," the highly organized ranks of undocumented youth seeking permanent residency either through education or the military (and sometimes both). Appearing on behalf of the former Surgeon General Richard Carmona, whose surging campaign to become the first Latino Senator in Arizona now leads in the latest polls, Clinton drew some of his biggest cheers for his support of the DREAM Act merely by calling it the "right thing to do." -- Bill Clinton has re-ignited the unstoppable new spirit of Arizona. Things will never be the same. Read More

Should customers pay for shuttered nuke plant?
Sunday, 10/21/2012
An attorney for The Utility Reform Network, a consumer advocacy group, says that the uncertainty surrounding San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station's future is creating real headaches for the long term and that Edison is being extremely hush-hush about its restart plans for the plant. Normally, Edison holds confidential meeting with the PUC to keep them in the know, but, Freedman says, there hasn’t been any sign that that is happening. -- CPUC rules require that once a plant is shut down for nine months, then the utility must file a notice with the commission explaining the plan to fix it. November will be the nine-month mark.

This 'N That

If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.
- John F. Kennedy

Hitler and Mussolini were only the primary spokesmen for the attitude of domination and craving for power that are in the heart of almost everyone. Until the source is cleared, there will always be confusion and hate, wars and class antagonisms.
- J. Krishnamurti

There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from fear and want and that they grow up in peace.
- Kofi A. Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations

The Bible has a very meaningful expression: The Spirit makes all things new. We are those who grow old, and we want everything done to our aged standards. The Spirit is never old; the Spirit is always young.
- Oscar Romero

If you want peace, work for justice.
- Pope Paul VI

It is penance to work, to give oneself to others, to endure the pinpricks of community living.
- Dorothy Day

Activism pays the rent on being alive and being here on the planet.
- Alice Walker

To fight and conquer in all our battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.
- Sun Tzu

If you live alone, whose feet will you wash?
- St. Basil

In order to find the edge, you must risk going over the edge.
- Dennis Dugan

The two kinds of people who exist in this world [at any one time] are the decent and the indecent. Color, religion and nationality are irrelevant. Kindness, decency and behavior are what matters most. Our collective challenge, it seems, is to create a city and community where decent people of all races, ethnicities and religions can look into the faces of other decent people and see only one thing -- God's image smiling back.
- Rabbi Micah Greenstein

The world cannot continue to wage war like physical giants and to seek peace like intellectual pygmies
- Basil O'Connor

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
- Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969)

When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others.
- Peace Pilgrim

When you're finally up on the moon, looking back at the earth, all these differences and nationalistic traits are pretty well going to blend and you're going to get a concept that maybe this is really one world and why the hell can't we learn to live together like decent people?
- Frank Borman

Each person has inside a basic decency and goodness. If he listens to it and acts on it, he is giving a great deal of what it is the world needs most. It is not complicated but it takes courage. It takes courage for a person to listen to his own goodness and act on it.
- Pablo Casals

What is the revolution that we need? We need to dissolve the lie that some people have a right to think of other people as their property. And we need at last to form a circle that includes us all, in which all of us are seen as equal... We do not belong to the other, but our lives are linked; we belong in a circle of others.
- Barbara Deming

Believe those who are seeking the truth; doubt those who find it.
- Andre Gide

Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds them. We live by the death of others. We are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.
- Leonardo Da Vinci

Peace comes from being able to contribute the best that we have, and all that we are, toward creating a world that supports everyone. But it is also securing the space for others to contibute the best that they have and all that they are.
- Hafsat Abiola

If you see good in people, you radiate a harmonious loving energy which uplifts those who are around you. If you can maintain this habit, this energy will turn into a steady flow of love.
- Annamalai Swami

Peace is not the absence of conflict but the presence of creative alternatives for responding to conflict -- alternatives to passive or aggressive responses, alternatives to violence.
- Dorothy Thompson

You can't lead anyone else further than you have gone yourself.
- Gene Mauch

The story of the human race is characterized by efforts to get along much more than by violent disputes, although it's the latter that make the history books. Violence is actually exceptional. The human race has survived because of cooperation, not aggression.
- Gerard Vanderhaar

When the people fear the government you have tyranny...when the government fears the people you have liberty.
- Thomas Jefferson

Aggressive conduct, if allowed to go unchecked and unchallenged, ultimately leads to war.
- John F. Kennedy

Instead of tug o' war, let's play hug o' war.
- Shel Silverstein

When I have money, I get rid of it quickly, lest it find a way into my heart.
- John Wesley

Your life and my life flow into each other as wave flows into wave, and unless there is peace and joy and freedom for you, there can be no real peace or joy or freedom for me. To see reality--not as we expect it to be but as it is--is to see that unless we live for each other and in and through each other, we do not really live very satisfactorily; that there can really be life only where there really is, in just this sense, love.
- (Carl) Frederick Buechner

If we do not change our direction we are likely to end up where we are headed for.
- Chinese Proverb

It is not your obligation to complete your work, but you are not at liberty to quit.
- Talmud

The love of one's country is a splendid thing. But why should love stop at the border?
- Pablo Casals

No matter how big a nation is, it is no stronger that its weakest people, and as long as you keep a person down, some part of you has to be down there to hold him down, so it means you cannot soar as you might otherwise.
- Marian Anderson

If Columbus had an advisory committee he would probably still be at the dock.
- Justice Arthur Goldberg

Observe good faith and justice toward all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all.
- George Washington

Everyone takes the limits of his own vision for the limits of the world.
- Arthur Schopenhauer

Chaos is a name for any order that produces confusion in our minds.
- George Santayana

I don't do great things. I do small things with great love.
- Mother Teresa

Through Gandhi and my own life experience, I have learned about nonviolence. I believe that human life is a very special gift from God, and that no one has a right to take that away in any cause, however just. I am convinced that nonviolence is more powerful than violence.
- Cesar Chavez

Help San Elijo Conservancy Preserve Gateway Park
News
The San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy website requests you to become part of an historic campaign to create Gateway Park. For more than 20 years, the community has fought to protect the Gateway Property, open space tucked between Solana Beach and San Elijo Lagoon, just east of Cardiff State Beach along Scenic Highway 101. In December 2011, the Conservancy purchased it for $3.75 million. Members of the community stepped forward to loan the Conservancy the funds to acquire the property. Now you can participate in a once-in-a-generation opportunity to do what was not possible before: secure this land for public enjoyment. With your donations, they will transform the Gateway Property into Gateway Park – a testament to community resolve and generosity. -Article reprinted from The Coast News.

Mother of gay CA Boy Scout fights for Eagle award
Article
(Reuters) - "The mother of a gay California Boy Scout denied an Eagle award because of his sexual orientation is fighting to overturn the decision before he turns 18, the cut-off date for the organization's highest honor. -- Ryan Andresen's mother, Karen, said the scoutmaster of his Troop 212 in Moraga, a San Francisco suburb, had refused to grant Eagle status to Ryan, who has been a scout since age 6, even though he met the requirements." {In September, computer chip-maker Intel, the Boy Scouts of America's biggest corporate donor, withdrew its support for the organization, which has about 2.7 million members.]

Yes on Prop. 34-Letter to The Coast News
News
My letter in The Coast News-Yes on Prop. 34. Here are the many reasons, supported by facts, why I support Prop 34 to replace the death penalty in California with life without parole: California’s death penalty is broken; many attempts to "fix" the system have failed. Bonnie Dumanis herself has called the death penalty a "hollow promise." We know that innocent people have been convicted of murder in California. In 2011 alone, three men were exonerated after serving a total of 57 years in California prisons-By Alessandra Colfi. [Editor's note: The Post encourages readers to write letters in support of Prop 34 to The Coast News, the UT and NCTimes, since they haven't taken a position on Prop 34 yet and we need to weigh in to make sure Prop 34 wins-it's appalling that it's trailing in the polls.]

Silent Spring Turns 50! Book of the Month-Oct!
News
Silent Spring Turns 50! A global effort to protect the environment was sparked 50 years ago on September 27, 1962, by the publication of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. When Carson died two years later at the age of 56, she left a substantial bequest to the Sierra Club, including royalties from future sales of Silent Spring. In her honor and memory, and in acknowledgement of the great contribution Rachel Carson made to the environmental movement, Progressive Post is proud to recommend Silent Spring as the Book of the Month for October 2012.

NRDC Petition-Stop the Frack Attack!
News
NRDC wants to help stop an onslaught of dangerous fracking. They are currently circulating a petition to President Obama to Stop the Frack Attack. Oil and gas companies are running amok as they race to expand fracking operations in dozens of states, leaving polluted landscapes, devastated communities and plummeting property values in their wake. What’s more, fracking is exempt from some of our country’s most important environmental protections. Dick Cheney is largely responsible for the expansion of fracking. Please consider signing this petition.

Wallace, insinuating that Gay Marriage is judicial activism, asks where is it in the Constitution that permits gay mariage. "Where is the right to interracial marriage in the Constitution" asked Ted Olsen of Wallace. Brilliant arguments by Olson. When Wallace insists the voters have the right to outlaw gay marriage, Olson asks if it would be constitutional for the voters to force blacks to drink at separate water fountains.

Manning Video:American troops slaughter civilians

Army intel analyst Bradley Manning faces decades in prison for allegedly leaking this video of a U.S. helicopter attack killing 11 civilians and wounding two children in Baghdad, Iraq. The naked face of a police state in America

Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis - In this video, now gone viral nationwide, a group of college students are huddled on the ground in a defensive position at UC Davis on November 18. UC police Lt. John Pike, then casually douses them with a chemical agent. Bystanders who were simply watching what was going on are also exposed. - If the police had legal grounds to make arrests, it seems apparent from the video that little or no force was necessary to achieve that goal. The students are obviously not a threat to the officers. It appears that the heavily armored riot police could have simply grabbed them and put them in flexi-cuffs had they chosen to do so. That means that this entire assault appears to be a perfect example of excessive force.

57 years ago: Uncommon bravery in Montgomery, AL
Article
The Montgomery bus boycott began on December 5, 1955, four days after Rosa Parks' arrest for refusing to give her bus seat to a white man. Although the boycott was originally planned to last only one day, the organizers of the boycott, led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., decided to extend it until the practice of public transportation segregation was outlawed. -- The boycott ended 381 days later, on December 20, 1956, the day the city of Montgomery received a court order demanding immediate integration of the buses. Here is a heart wrenching story from that period ...
