Obama appeals - demands unrestricted detentions
Obama's steady and relentless assault against civil liberties --The White House has asked the US Second Circuit Court of Appeals to place an emergency stay on a ruling made last week by a federal judge so that the president's power to indefinitely detain Americans without charge is reaffirmed immediately. -- On Wednesday, September 12, US District Court Judge Katherine Forrest made permanent a temporary injunction she issued in May that bars the federal government from abiding by the indefinite detention provision in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012, or NDAA. Judge Forrest ruled that a clause that gives the government the power to arrest US citizens suspected of maintaining alliances with terrorists and hold them without due process violated the Constitution and that the White House would be stripped of that ability immediately. This 'N That

Someday, after we have mastered the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, shall harness for God the energies of love. Then for the second time in the history of the world, we will have discovered fire.
- Teilhard de Chardin

To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best day and night to make you everybody else, means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting.
- e.e.cummings

Young people say, What is the sense of our small effort? They cannot see that we must lay one brick at at time, take one step at a time; we can be responsible only for the one action in the present moment. But we can beg for an increase of love in our hearts that will vitalize and transform all our individual actions, and know that God will take them and multiply them, as Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes.
- Dorothy Day, 1963

In India when we meet and part we often say, "Namaste," which means: I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides; I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides; I honor the place in you of love, of light, of truth, of peace. I honor the place within you where if you are in that place in you and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us….. "Namaste."
- Ram Dass

Teach this triple truth to all: A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.
- Buddha

There is a theory which states that if ever anybody discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.
- Douglas Adams

The question is not, do we go to church; the question is, have we been converted. The crux of Christianity is not whether or not we give donations to popular charities but whether or not we are really committed to the poor.
- Joan Chittester, OSB

No man is an island entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
- John Donne

Violence just hurts those who are already hurt...Instead of exposing the brutality of the oppressor, it justifies it.
- Cesar Chavez

Change comes not from men and women changing their minds, but from the change from one generation to the next.
- J. K. Galbraith

I destroy my enemies when I make them my friends.
- Abraham Lincoln

A good end sanctify evil means; not must we ever do evil, that good might come of it. We are ready to retaliate, rather than forgive or gain by love and information . . . Force may subdue, but love gains. And one that forgives first wins the laurel.
- William Penn

The first essential characteristics of nonviolent action is that it is creative.
- Hildegarde Goss-Mayr

Peace demands the most heroic labor and the most difficult sacrifice. It demands greater heroism than war. It demands greater fidelity to the truth and a much more perfect purity of conscience. The Christian fight for peace is not to be confused with defeatism.
- Thomas Merton

What all men fear, I too must fear - how barren and pointless a thought!
- Tao Te Ching

The peace process we all aim for will not necessarily be a result of the mere signing of a treaty or agreement. It must become a matter of our everyday lives, so that peace settles and lasts and becomes supported by everybody. We therefore have to give peace all the required care and preserve it and promote it.
- King Hassan II of Morocco (1929-1999)

In all things it is better to hope than to despair.
- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

I am part and parcel of the whole and cannot find God apart from the rest of humanity.
- Mohandas Gandhi

We must be the change we wish to see.
- Mahatma Gandhi

The belief that we some day shall be able to prevent war is to me one with the belief in the possibility of making humanity really human.
- Ellen Key, 1916

The first question which the priest and the Levite asked [on the Jericho Road] was: ‘If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?' But...the good Samaritan reversed the question: ‘If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?'
- Martin Luther King

Do you want long life and happiness? Strive for peace with all your heart.
- Psalm 34:12,14

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.
- Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969)

To save one life, it is as if you had saved the world.
- Talmud

The point of nonviolence is to build a floor, a strong new floor, beneath which we can no longer sink. A platform which stands a few feet above napalm, torture, exploitation, poison gas, A and H bombs, the works. Give man a decent place to stand.
- Joan Baez

When the people fear the government you have tyranny...when the government fears the people you have liberty.
- Thomas Jefferson

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
- Arthur C. Clarke

The absence of risk is a sure sign of mediocrity.

The pursuit of peace and progress cannot end in a few years in either victory or defeat. The pursuit of peace and progress, with its trials and errors, its successes and setbacks, can never be relaxed and never abandoned.
- Dag Hammarskjold (1905-1961)Former UN General Secretary

Compromise does not mean cowardice.
- John F. Kennedy

I really see no other solution than to turn inwards and to root out all the rottenness there. I no longer believe that we can change anything in the world until we first change ourselves. And that seems to me the only lesson to be learned from this war.
- Etty Hillesum (concentration camp victim)

The two kinds of people who exist in this world [at any one time] are the decent and the indecent. Color, religion and nationality are irrelevant. Kindness, decency and behavior are what matters most. Our collective challenge, it seems, is to create a city and community where decent people of all races, ethnicities and religions can look into the faces of other decent people and see only one thing -- God's image smiling back.
- Rabbi Micah Greenstein

At all the times you can,
- To all the people you can,

Everything, everything in war is barbaric . . . But the worst barbarity of war is that it forces men collectively to commit acts against which individually they would revolt with their whole being.
- Ellen Key, 1916

America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.
- Abraham Lincoln

Peace is the work of justice indirectly, in so far as justice removes the obstacles to peace; but it is the work of charity (love) directly, since charity, according to its very notion, causes peace.
- Thomas Aquinas

Dare to be naive.

The ultimate measure of a person is not where one stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where one stands in times of challenge and controversy.

It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.

- Chinese Proverb

When you're finally up on the moon, looking back at the earth, all these differences and nationalistic traits are pretty well going to blend and you're going to get a concept that maybe this is really one world and why the hell can't we learn to live together like decent people?
- Frank Borman

The Holy Prophet Mohammed came into this world and taught us: 'That man is a Muslim who never hurts anyone by word or deed, but who works for the benefit and happiness of God's creatures. Belief in God is to love one's fellow men.'

- Vatican statement to the U.N., 1976

I claim to be no more than an average person with less than average ability. I have not the shadow of doubt that any man or woman can achieve what I have, if he or she would make the same effort and cultivate the same hope and faith.

Indefinite Military Detention Unconstitutional
Obama's NDAA Law Allowing Indefinite Military Detention of Citizens Ruled Unconstitutional. The Obama administration's efforts to enshrine sweeping 9/11-era rollbacks of civil liberties and constitutional rights as federal law hit a serious roadblock yesterday, as a federal judge struck down clauses of the National Defense Authorization Act as unconstitutional. -- The offending section of the NDAA, signed by Obama on New Year's Eve last year, grants the government the power to put citizens in military detention indefinitely and without the usual recourse to civil courts. -- Chris Hedges, along with other writers and activists including Daniel Ellsberg and Noam Chomsky, challenged the law soon after in a federal lawsuit, arguing it is so broad that it infringes on their own first-amendment rights.

The plug is being pulled on SONGS. Rest in Peace
"San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, the twin-reactor power plant that spread its isotopic glow across coastal communities from Los Angeles to San Diego, was declared dead last week. SONGS, as it was affectionately known, was 44, though many of its parts are considerably younger. -- Though multiple scientists, engineers, public interest groups and government agencies diagnosed San Onofre's troubles as terminal early in the year, Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric, SONGS' "guardians" held out hope" death was imminent when the plug was pulled last week: The nuclear fuel will be removed.[FireDogLake.com]

Restarting San Onofre reactor could take months
LA TIMES -Sep. 13, 2012 - "The darkened San Onofre power plant will not restart even one of its two reactors for months, the head of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Wednesday. In the meantime, anti-nuclear advocates stepped up pressure to keep the plant shut down, with the release of an analysis showing the issues with San Onofre's steam generators are among the worst in the industry."

Capital punishment doesn't equal justice
It's time to eliminate the death penalty in California. It is an unworkable and costly failure that fails to achieve justice. Proposition 34 offers a reasonable way to end the death penalty and replace it with life in prison without the possibility of parole, taking prisoners off death row and requiring them to work and provide restitution to the families of their victims. By Lawrence M. Hinman, professor of philosophy at the University of San Diego

Help San Elijo Conservancy Preserve Gateway Park
The San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy website requests you to become part of an historic campaign to create Gateway Park. For more than 20 years, the community has fought to protect the Gateway Property, open space tucked between Solana Beach and San Elijo Lagoon, just east of Cardiff State Beach along Scenic Highway 101. In December 2011, the Conservancy purchased it for $3.75 million. Members of the community stepped forward to loan the Conservancy the funds to acquire the property. Now you can participate in a once-in-a-generation opportunity to do what was not possible before: secure this land for public enjoyment. With your donations, they will transform the Gateway Property into Gateway Park – a testament to community resolve and generosity. -Article reprinted from The Coast News.

A deadly civil war brewing in the Republican Party
The underground video of Mitt Romney carping about the 47% of Americans who are "government moochers" may well have sealed it. Mitt Romney is going down, and the fight already is on for the future of the Republican Party. The battle will be bitter—and prolonged, says Robert Shrum. "Romney is losing, knows he is losing, and is starting to panic."

Gay Marriage may come soon in California!
Within as little as two weeks, we may know whether The American Foundation for Equal Rights case challenging Prop. 8 will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. If the Justices decide not to hear this case, marriage equality will be restored in California. Regardless of what the U.S. Supreme Court decides to do, Prop. 8 is hanging by a thread. If the U.S. Supreme Court decides to hear the case for marriage equality, the announcement can come as early as September 25.

Chicago teachers are fighting for all of us
FOR TOO many years, public school teachers and their unions have had to endure a bipartisan attack on their rights, their working conditions, even their competence and commitment--all in the name of what's supposedly "best for the children." -- In Chicago this week, teachers have taken a stand for what's really best for children--fully funded public schools and qualified, well-compensated educators to teach them. The 26,000 members of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) are saying "no" to the smears against educators, "no" to the neglect of public schools, "no" to transforming education into a business venture.

Undercover video exposes the real Mitt Romney ...

Mother Jones magazine on Monday released undercover footage of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney candidly addressing donors during a private, off-the-record fundraiser. -- "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it," the former Massachusetts governor can be heard saying. -- "That, that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what ... These are people who pay no income tax," he continued, adding "so our message of low taxes doesn’t connect." -- "[M]y job is, is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

Evidence reinforces criminal negligence of Bush

DemocracyNow.org - Newly disclosed documents provide further evidence the administration of George W. Bush ignored repeated warnings about Osama bin Laden's plans to attack the United States. In author and journalist Kurt Eichenwald fleshes out how the Bush administration dismissed a number of warnings of an al-Qaeda attack against the United States beginning in the spring of 2001, instead focusing on alleged threats from Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

'Sunshine' vitamin D may aid in treatment of TB
(CBS News) A little bit of sunshine never hurt anyone. Now, a new study shows that the "sunshine" vitamin - vitamin D - may help speed up the recovery of tuberculosis patients. -- Before antibiotics were readily available, doctors would to send their patients to receive heliotherapy - basically prescribed sunbathing. The practice was stopped since more effective antibiotics were invented, but physicians have often wondered why the sunshine treatment seemed to somewhat work.

Why San Onofre Should Never be restarted

"If Edison tries to restart a reactor that is heavily damaged without having fixed the underlying problems, it places us all at risk," said UC Santa Cruz professor Daniel Hirsch. -- San Onofre's two active reactors were both shut down in January. One was shut down for planned repairs while the other was shut down abruptly on Jan. 31, when a faulty piece of equipment leaked a small amount of radioactive steam. The leak led to the discovery that many more cooling tubes were wearing out more quickly than expected. The plant has been offline ever since. Hirsch said for the safety of 8.5 million Southern Californians that live within 50 miles of the plant, it should stay that way.

San Diego: False arrest while registering voters
Ray Lutz filed suit on Sept. 13, 2012, for a false arrest which occurred on November 29, 2011, while Lutz was in the middle of registering voters in San Diego's Civic Center Plaza, well known as the town square of San Diego. The suit named three defendants explicily: a) the City of San Diego, b) Police officer Tony Lessa, who arrested Lutz, and c) CBRE, "CB Richard Ellis Group" that manages the Civic Center Plaza Office Building and that performed a citizen's arrest for trespassing. The Supreme Court has ruled that the public has the right to use privately owned malls for peaceful political activity, such as gathering signatures or handing out political literature, with time, place, and manner restrictions.

Perverse Corporatists stomping on labor: Prop 32
From the Daily Kos.com - A perverse coalition of the worst elements of the elitist 1% has coalesced to foist labor-bashing Proposition 32 off on the voters with the euphemistic title of "Paycheck Protection". - A survey of the mega-contributors reveals a sordid gang of rich right wing, gay-bashing, fundamentalist creationists, environmental smashers bent on breaking the back of labor unions.

Ellen DeGeneres interviews Clint Eastwood

Ellen DeGeneres spoke yesterday with Clint Eastwood about his speech to the RNC convention, his libertarian beliefs, and same-sex marriage. "Part of the libertarian idea -- leave everybody alone," Eastwood tells Ellen in response to her mentioning gay marriage. Eastwood suggests "worrying about what everyone thinks" about same-sex marriage isn't "worthy" -- given the financial issues confronting the nation — which is not to say that he thinks it should not be enacted, merely, questioning why people care to spend time fighting it.

Movie teaser: -- "HOW TO START A REVOLUTION" is the remarkable untold story of Nobel Peace Prize nominee Gene Sharp, the world's leading expert on non-violent revolution. Free showing of movie in VISTA on Sep. 22, Palomar Unitarian Fellowship, 3:00 PM. -- This new film (from first time director Ruaridh Arrow) reveals how Gene's work has given a new generation of revolutionary leaders the weapons needed to overthrow dictators. It shows how his 198 steps to non-violent regime change have inspired uprisings from Serbia to Ukraine and from Egypt to Syria and how his work has spread across the globe in an unstoppable wave of profound democratic change. How To Start A Revolution is the story of the power of people to change their world, the modern revolution and the man behind it all.

The Revolution starts with MUSIC - Nicky Romero

Nicky Romero in TOULOUSE -- Revolutions are conceived in transcendental moments of music.

Romney did NOT 'Save the 2002 Olympics'

Mitt Romney did not "Save the 2002 Olympics". IT WAS THE TAX PAYER WHO SAVED THE OLYMPICS in tune of $1.4 Billion: More than any other olympic grants before or after 2002. Bribery and kickbacks were plenty even after Romney took over and even prevelent today. The venues did NOT make a profit as stated; and the state is still paying for them. Sen. John McCain blasted Romney's waste of taxpayer money a "national disgrace."

Jennifer Granholm sets Dem Convention on fire

Granholm energized the delegates at the Democratic National Convention Thursday evening with a sharp-tongued speech about President Obama's decision to bail out automakers General Motors and Chrysler and Mitt Romney's opposition to the plan. -- Granholm, now a Current TV host, ripped into Romney's California home redesign, saying, "Siure, Mitt Romney loves our lakes and trees. He loves our cars so much, they have their own elevator. But the people who design, build, and sell those cars? Well, in Romney's world, the cars get the elevator; the workers get the shaft." -- Fist-pumping her arms and waving them over her head.

Obama won a law giving women equal pay

I was really captivated by this speech by Lilly Ledbetter at the DNC Convention in Charlotte. She is the real thing: A tough, determined woman with a hard Alabama accent. Her message is true Southern Grit(s) with red eye gravy. She brought the house down! And she rounded up many thousands of new women voters with this speech. President Obama knows that women being paid 77 cents on the dollar for doing the same work as men isn't just unfair, it hurts families. -- So the first law he signed was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to help ensure that women are paid the same as men for doing the exact same work.

50 years ago, JFK forced integration of Ole Miss
Fifty years ago James Meredith became the first black man to be admitted into the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). October 1, 1962. Robert Kennedy called in 500 U.S. Marshals to take control, who were supported by the 70th Army Engineer Combat Battalion from Ft Campbell, Kentucky. They created a tent camp and kitchen for the US Marshals. To bolster law enforcement, President John F. Kennedy sent in U.S. Army military police from the 503rd Military Police Battalion, and called in troops from the Mississippi Army National Guard and the U.S. Border Patrol as well. In the violent clash, two people died, including the French journalist Paul Guihard on assignment for the London Daily Sketch. The naked face of a police state in America

Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis - In this video, now gone viral nationwide, a group of college students are huddled on the ground in a defensive position at UC Davis on November 18. UC police Lt. John Pike, then casually douses them with a chemical agent. Bystanders who were simply watching what was going on are also exposed. - If the police had legal grounds to make arrests, it seems apparent from the video that little or no force was necessary to achieve that goal. The students are obviously not a threat to the officers. It appears that the heavily armored riot police could have simply grabbed them and put them in flexi-cuffs had they chosen to do so. That means that this entire assault appears to be a perfect example of excessive force.
