S.O.S. - from neighbor desert town under SEIGE!
Friday, 08/10/2012
The little Imperial County town of Ocotillo is under siege from a huge bulldozing corporation and pleads for all cars from San Diego to come in a giant caravan of protest to save the environment. A wind developer flooded their town with a flammable chemical deposited all over lawns where kids play, and nobody is making them clean it up. It's utterly lawless out there. They are building roads 3 times wider than allowed. Bulldozing over Native American sacred sites and burrowing animals; biologists call it a "killing field." Getting take permits to kill endangered Bighorn lambs and ewes, contaminating the town with dust clouds in an area with deadly Valley Fever spores. They've cut down the ocotillo forest ...

The means by which we live have outdistanced the ends for which we live. Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men.
- Martin Luther King

The cause of violence is not ignorance. It is self-interest. ... Only reverence can restrain violence - reverence for human life and the environment .
- Rev. William Sloan Coffin, Jr.

It is penance to work, to give oneself to others, to endure the pinpricks of community living.
- Dorothy Day

Dust turned to hope.
- Elie Weisel

Respectful dialogue, in the interest of searching for more complete truth, is considerably more productive than arguing for the purity of position.
- Gerard Vanderhaar

The miracle of the wicked is reinforced by the weakness of the virtuous.
- Winston Churchill

The longer we listen to one another - with real attention - the more commonality we will find in all our lives. That is, if we are careful to exchange with one another life stories and not simply opinions.
- Barbara Deming

If you think you're too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room.
- Anita Koddick

What good is it to me that Mary gave birth to the son of God fourteen hundred years ago, and I do not also give birth to the Son of God in my time and in my culture? We are all meant to be mothers of God. God is always needing to be born.
- Meister Eckhart

The first principle of non-violent action is that of non-cooperation with everything humiliating.
- Cesar Chavez

War is an invention of the human mind. The human mind can invent peace with justice.
- Norman Cousins

Always forgive your enemies. Nothing annoys them more.
- Oscar Wilde

The God of life summons us to life; more, to be lifegivers, especially toward those who lie under the heel of the powers.
- Daniel Berrigan

Past the seeker as he prayed came the crippled and the beggar and the beaten. And seeing them...he cried, "Great God, how is it that a loving creator can see such things and yet do nothing about them?"...God said, "I did do something. I made you."
- Sufi Teaching

I do not believe in using women in combat, because females are too fierce.

Peace is an environment where conflicts are resolved without violence, where people are free, not exploited, living so they can grow to their full potential.

It is not your obligation to complete your work, but you are not at liberty to quit.

Those who are ready to sacrifice freedom for security ultimately will lose both.
- Abraham Lincoln

Warmaking doesn't stop warmaking. If it did, our problems would have stopped millennia ago.

- Pythagoras

At some ideas you stand perplexed, especially at the sight of human sins, uncertain whether to combat it by force or by human love. Always decide, "I will combat it with human love." If you make up your mind about that once and for all, you can conquer the whole world. Loving humility is a terrible force; it is the strongest of all things and there is nothing like it.
- Dostoyevsky - The Brothers Karamazo

To resort to power one need not be violent, and to speak to conscience one need not be meek. The most effective action both resorts to power and engages conscience. Nonviolent actions does not have to get others to be nice. It can in effect force them to consult their consciences. Nor does it have to petition those in power to do something about a situation. It can face the authorities with a new fact and say: Accept this new situation which we have created.
- Barbara Deming

Peace is a gift,
- It is a gift we give to ourselves,

The hottest fires in hell are reserved for those who remain neutral in times of moral crisis.
- Edmund Burke

The pacifist's task today is to find a method of helping and healing which provides a revolutionary constructive substitute for war.
- Vera Brittain, 1964

There is a certain kind of peace that is not merely the absence of war. It is larger than that. The peace I am thinking of is not at the mercy of history's rule, nor is it a passive surrender to the status quo. The peace I am thinking of is the dance of an open mind when it engages another equally open one -- an activity that occurs most naturally, most often in the reading/writing world we live in. Accessible as it is, this particular kind of peace warrants vigilance.
- Toni Morrison, The Dancing Mind (1996)

I hope...that mankind will at length, as they call themselves reasonable creatures, have reason and sense enough to settle their differences without cutting throats; for in my opinion there never was a good war, or a bad peace.
- Benjamin Franklin

There have been periods of history in which episodes of terrible violence occurred but for which the word violence was never used...Violence is shrouded in justifying myths that lend it moral legitimacy, and these myths for the most part kept people from recognizing the violence for what it was. The people who burned witches at the stake never for one moment thought of their act as violence; rather they though of it as an act of divinely mandated righteousness. The same can be said of most of the violence we humans have ever committed.

- J. K. Galbraith

A loving person lives in a loving world. A hostile person lives in a hostile world. Everyone you meet is your mirror.
- Ken Keyes, Jr., quoted in Catholic Digest, June 2000

If you love the justice of Jesus Christ more than you fear human judgment then you will seek to do compassion. Compassion means that if I see my friend and my enemy in equal need, I shall help them both equally. Justice demands that we seek and find the stranger, the broken, the prisoner and comfort them and offer them our help. Here lies the holy compassion of God that causes the devils much distress.
- Mechtild of Magdeburg

Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them.

Everything, everything in war is barbaric . . . But the worst barbarity of war is that it forces men collectively to commit acts against which individually they would revolt with their whole being.

The world will not be inherited by the strongest, it will be inherited by those most able to change
- Charles Darwin

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.

Sometime in your life, hope that you might see one starved man, the look on his face when the bread finally arrives. Hope that you might have baked it or bought or even kneaded it yourself. For that look on his face, for your meeting his eyes across a piece of bread, you might be willing to lose a lot, or suffer a lot, or die a little, even.

Ethics Troubles Plague New DeMaio Campaign Advisor
Article
Mayoral candidate Carl DeMaio announced that he was "thrilled" to welcome Art Castañares -- a former San Diego County Democratic Party chair -- to his campaign team. The current Democratic chair, Jess Durfee, issued the following statement in response: "I am surprised that Carl DeMaio is promoting his connection to a downtown lobbyist with an ethically dubious track record. From Art’s ethics breaches to his legal entanglements, he doesn’t exactly embody the reform that the DeMaio campaign has been promising. If this is the kind of advisor Carl wants in the mayoral race or potentially in City Hall, I think voters have cause for concern." [A crook is a crook, regardless of party-Editor]

A Pernicious Drive Toward Secrecy
Article
EDITORIAL - The New York Times - "The Senate Intelligence Committee has approved misguided legislation that would severely chill news coverage of national security issues. -- Drafted in secret without public hearings, the provisions are part of the intelligence authorization bill for fiscal 2013. If enacted, the bill would undermine democracy by denying Americans access to information essential to national debate on critical issues like the extent of government spying powers and the use of torture."

It's the Guns–But We All Know-It's Not Really Guns
Article
"But here's the difference between the rest of the world and us: We have TWO Auroras that take place every single day of every single year! At least 24 Americans every day (8-9,000 a year) are killed by people with guns – and that doesn't count the ones accidentally killed by guns or who commit suicide with a gun. Count them and you can triple that number to over 25,000...the United States is responsible for over 80% of all the gun deaths in the 23 richest countries combined." -Michael Moore

Part 2: "We Americans are incredibly good killers. We believe in killing as a way of accomplishing our goals. Three-quarters of our states execute criminals, even though the states with the lower murder rates are generally the states with no death penalty." -Michael Moore

Approximately 80,000 people are killed as a direct result of the blast, and another 35,000 are injured. At least another 60,000 would be dead by the end of the year from the effects of the fallout. There were 90,000 buildings in Hiroshima before the bomb was dropped; only 28,000 remained after the bombing. Failure to be open and honest with us Americans
News
Mitt Romney is whining and complaining about the demands for him to release his tax returns. Mr. Romney has persistently refused to tell voters about his finances. Even now it is not clear how much money he has made from Bain in the 13 (or 10) years since he left the company. The more financial experts dig into his opaque financial shenanigans and schemes, the more Americans distrust this man. Read this EDITORIAL from the New York Times

The dark side of the rainbow
Article
Kit-Bacon Gressitt of Fallbrook, writes about the stereotypes we experience in childhood which ultimately become our beliefs -- unless we have influential role models who challenge them and their underlying prejudices. This suggests that all the otherists in our town who see "wetbacks" instead of humans, the homophobic owners of Chick-fil-A, the flyers of Confederate flags who really don't do it to honor the history of the South but because they long for white supremacy, they could all be dying breeds. Millions of children are living hopeless, poverty- and violence-stricken lives in the war zones of our cities; in the educational deserts of our rural areas. CEOs stealing $ millions from our kids schooling

Robert Greenwald: "Public education is essential to our democracy -- but big corporations and their front group ALEC see it as just another way to make money. They're working to ensure your tax dollars get diverted to private companies that skimp on quality, sometimes foregoing school buildings and classrooms altogether, to maximize profits. They might as well put a dollar sign on students' foreheads." -- ALEC is working to ensure that public education dollars get diverted to private profits. Their approach is working -- for them. Not so much for the students who pay the price in the form of a subpar education and poor performance -- just so they skim off a fat profit -- just like Romney's Bain Capital.

"Romney has no capacity for empathy."

Julie Goodridge was a lead plaintiff in Goodridge v. Dept of Public Health -- the lawsuit that brought same-sex marriage to Massachusetts. In this video, Goodridge shares her family's encounters with Gov. Mitt Romney, including a meeting with Romney, which Goodridge describes as "the most frustrating experience in the entire marriage case." Julie was so taken back by Romney's callous attitude that she declared Romney "has no capacity for empathy."

Sugar: The Bitter Truth

A UCSF professor argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of diabetis, some cancers and of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin. Dr. Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, explores the damage caused by sugary foods. -- The American Heart Association now recommends that you keep added sugars to less than 5% of your calorie intake. That's about 25 grams or 6 teaspoons per day for an average-sized adult. This is an abbreviated video of the 85 minutes version.

Nuclear power plant failures are catastrophic

The nuclear reactor catastrophes at Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, and now at Fukushima, Japan, remind us that a heinous specter continues to hover over the health and security of millions of people around the world. Not only does the threat of nuclear proliferation linger, but every nuclear station sits as a ticking bomb awaiting meltdown and terrorist attack. -- Knocking on the Devil's Door, by award-winning director Gary Null, deconstructs the corporate and political rhetoric feeding the media misinformation campaigns to seduce us into believing that low level radiation emitted from nuclear plants is perfectly safe and that our future depends on nuclear energy.

The naked face of a police state in America

Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis - In this video, now gone viral nationwide, a group of college students are huddled on the ground in a defensive position at UC Davis on November 18. UC police Lt. John Pike, then casually douses them with a chemical agent. Bystanders who were simply watching what was going on are also exposed. - If the police had legal grounds to make arrests, it seems apparent from the video that little or no force was necessary to achieve that goal. The students are obviously not a threat to the officers. It appears that the heavily armored riot police could have simply grabbed them and put them in flexi-cuffs had they chosen to do so. That means that this entire assault appears to be a perfect example of excessive force.

Ted Olson Interview With Fox News Chris Wallace

Wallace, insinuating that Gay Marriage is judicial activism, asks where is it in the Constitution that permits gay mariage. "Where is the right to interracial marriage in the Constitution" asked Ted Olsen of Wallace. Brilliant arguments by Olson. When Wallace insists the voters have the right to outlaw gay marriage, Olson asks if it would be constitutional for the voters to force blacks to drink at separate water fountains.

Her name is Severn Cullis-Suzuki, and her speech was given at a U.N. assembly in Brazil when she was twelve years old. She had raised all the money to travel to the delegation, five thousand miles from her home, herself. Her father, geneticist and environmental activist David Suzuki, is a third-generation Japanese Canadian.

Robert Kennedy called in 500 U.S. Marshals to take control, who were supported by the 70th Army Engineer Combat Battalion from Ft Campbell, Kentucky. They created a tent camp and kitchen for the US Marshals. To bolster law enforcement, President John F. Kennedy sent in U.S. Army military police from the 503rd Military Police Battalion, and called in troops from the Mississippi Army National Guard and the U.S. Border Patrol as well. In the violent clash, two people died, including the French journalist Paul Guihard on assignment for the London Daily Sketch.
