| NO to NAFTA on Steroids from June 30 to July 8, Sadly, San Diego is host this week to an 11 nation conference of trans-Pacific nations intent on cooking up an un-holy trade agreement that that will be much larger and much worse than the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The treaty will offfshore good-paying jobs to low-wage nations and undercut working conditions globally, create new tools for attacking environmental and consumer safety standards, expand the deregulation of banks, hedge funds and insurance companies, and incalculable devastation to American citizens. In April, we cannot see sunflowers in France, so we might say the sunflowers do not exist. But the local farmers have already planted thousands of seeds, and when they look at the bare hills, they may be able to see the sunflowers already. The sunflowers are there. They lack only the conditions of sun, heat, rain and July. Just because we cannot see them does not mean that they do not exist. Nothing is so strong as gentleness; nothing so gentle as real strength. The love of one's country is a splendid thing. But why should love stop at the border? Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups. What good is a house, if you haven't got a decent planet to put it on? Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness, that must frighten us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, Courageous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. You playing small does not help the world. There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And when we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. When we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. People who are willing to give up freedom for the sake of short term security, deserve neither freedom nor security. Men are so accustomed to maintaining external order by violence that they cannot conceive of life being possible without violence. If Columbus had an advisory committee he would probably still be at the dock. When a true genius appears in this world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him. No one has a right to sit down and feel hopeless. There is too much work to do. We are, each of us angels with only one wing; and we can only fly by embracing one another. To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best day and night to make you everybody else, means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting. We cannot change the past, but we can change our attitude toward it. Uproot guilt and plant forgiveness. Tear out arrogance and seed humility. Exchange love for hate --- thereby, making the present comfortable and the future promising. There is a certain kind of peace that is not merely the absence of war. It is larger than that. The peace I am thinking of is not at the mercy of history's rule, nor is it a passive surrender to the status quo. The peace I am thinking of is the dance of an open mind when it engages another equally open one -- an activity that occurs most naturally, most often in the reading/writing world we live in. Accessible as it is, this particular kind of peace warrants vigilance. The pioneers of a warless world are the young men (and women) who refuse military service. Chaos is a name for any order that produces confusion in our minds. Non-violence is a very powerful weapon. Most people don't understand the power of non-violence and tend to be amazed by the whole idea. Those who have been involved in bringing about change and see the difference between violence and non-violence are firmly committed to a lifetime of non-violence, not because it is easy or because it is cowardly, but because it is an effective and very powerful way. To resort to power one need not be violent, and to speak to conscience one need not be meek. The most effective action both resorts to power and engages conscience. Nonviolent actions does not have to get others to be nice. It can in effect force them to consult their consciences. Nor does it have to petition those in power to do something about a situation. It can face the authorities with a new fact and say: Accept this new situation which we have created. Non-violence, which is the quality of the heart, cannot come by an appeal to the brain. War is, at first, the hope that one will be better off; next, the expectation that the other fellow will be worse off; then, the satisfaction that he isn't any better off; and, finally, the surprise at everyone's being worse off. In every child who is born, no matter what circumstances, and of no matter what parents, the potentiality of the human race is born again: and in him, too, once more, and of each of us, our terrific responsibility toward human life; toward the utmost idea of goodness, of the horror of terror, and of God. Always forgive your enemies. Nothing annoys them more. The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality. Accurst be he that first invented war. Those who are ready to sacrifice freedom for security ultimately will lose both. I believe we are on the edge of a quantum leap into a whole new way of organizing and living as a human family. Freedom is actually a bigger game than power. Power is about what you can control. Freedom is about what you can unleash. They make a desert and call it peace. The fragrance always remains in the hand that gives the rose. A peace that comes from fear and not from the heart is the opposite of peace. If you live alone, whose feet will you wash? If we do not change our direction we are likely to end up where we are headed for. In the path of our happiness shall we find the learning for which we have chosen this lifetime. Nonviolence doesn't always work -- but violence never does. Until lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunters. Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds them. We live by the death of others. We are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men. If you want to make peace, you don't talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies. Of all the frictional resistances, the one that most retards human movement is ignorance. This is an incredible video of a Canadian girl who spoke to the United Nations and left them completely silent and speechless for six minutes. Her name is Severn Cullis-Suzuki, and her speech was given at a U.N. assembly in Brazil when she was twelve years old. She had raised all the money to travel to the delegation, five thousand miles from her home, herself. Army intel analyst Bradley Manning faces decades in prison for allegedly leaking this video of a U.S. helicopter attack killing 11 civilians and wounding two children in Baghdad, Iraq. The Army covered up the evidence and declared the war crime "justified". Now they say that exposing the massacre is criminal.

Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis - In this video, now gone viral nationwide, a group of college students are huddled on the ground in a defensive position at UC Davis on November 18. UC police Lt. John Pike, then casually douses them with a chemical agent. Bystanders who were simply watching what was going on are also exposed. - If the police had legal grounds to make arrests, it seems apparent from the video that little or no force was necessary to achieve that goal. The students are obviously not a threat to the officers. It appears that the heavily armored riot police could have simply grabbed them and put them in flexi-cuffs had they chosen to do so. That means that this entire assault appears to be a perfect example of excessive force.

Fifty years ago James Meredith became the first black man to be admitted into the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). October 1, 1962. Robert Kennedy called in 500 U.S. Marshals to take control, who were supported by the 70th Army Engineer Combat Battalion from Ft Campbell, Kentucky. They created a tent camp and kitchen for the US Marshals. To bolster law enforcement, President John F. Kennedy sent in U.S. Army military police from the 503rd Military Police Battalion, and called in troops from the Mississippi Army National Guard and the U.S. Border Patrol as well. In the violent clash, two people died, including the French journalist Paul Guihard on assignment for the London Daily Sketch. He was found dead behind the Lyceum building with a gunshot wound to the back. One hundred-sixty US Marshals, one-third of the group, were injured in the melee, and 40 soldiers and National Guardsmen were wounded.

Three members of Parliament in Iceland have nominated Bradley Manning for the Nobel Peace Prize, and laid out the case: ""Manning is a soldier in the United States army who stands accused of releasing hundreds of thousands of documents to the whistleblower website WikiLeaks. ... his alleged actions helped motivate the democratic Arab Spring movements, shed light on secret corporate influence on our foreign policies, and most recently contributed to the Obama Administration agreeing to withdraw all U.S.troops from the occupation in Iraq."

Aug. 6, 1945, at 8:16 a.m. Japanese time, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world's first atom bomb, over the city of Hiroshima. Approximately 80,000 people are killed as a direct result of the blast, and another 35,000 are injured. At least another 60,000 would be dead by the end of the year from the effects of the fallout. There were 90,000 buildings in Hiroshima before the bomb was dropped; only 28,000 remained after the bombing. Of the city's 200 doctors before the explosion; only 20 were left alive or capable of working. There were 1,780 nurses before—only 150 remained who were able to tend to the sick and dying.
