NC Film Club rolls Shuffle Sunday, 08/12/2012 The Summer-Fall Season continues with Shuffle on August 12. This 'N ThatI really see no other solution than to turn inwards and to root out all the rottenness there. I no longer believe that we can change anything in the world until we first change ourselves. And that seems to me the only lesson to be learned from this war. - Etty Hillesum (concentration camp victim)The ultimate measure of a person is not where one stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where one stands in times of challenge and controversy. - Martin Luther King In April, we cannot see sunflowers in France, so we might say the sunflowers do not exist. But the local farmers have already planted thousands of seeds, and when they look at the bare hills, they may be able to see the sunflowers already. The sunflowers are there. They lack only the conditions of sun, heat, rain and July. Just because we cannot see them does not mean that they do not exist. - Thich Nhat Hanh Nothing is so strong as gentleness; nothing so gentle as real strength. - St. Francis de Sales The love of one's country is a splendid thing. But why should love stop at the border? - Pablo Casals Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups. - John Kenneth Galbraith What good is a house, if you haven't got a decent planet to put it on? - Henry David Thoreau Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness, that must frighten us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, Courageous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. You playing small does not help the world. There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And when we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. When we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. - Nelson Mandela People who are willing to give up freedom for the sake of short term security, deserve neither freedom nor security. - Benjamin Franklin Men are so accustomed to maintaining external order by violence that they cannot conceive of life being possible without violence. - Leo Tolstoy If Columbus had an advisory committee he would probably still be at the dock. - Justice Arthur Goldberg When a true genius appears in this world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him. - Jonathan Swift No one has a right to sit down and feel hopeless. There is too much work to do. - Dorothy Day We are, each of us angels with only one wing; and we can only fly by embracing one another. - Luciano de Crescenzo To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best day and night to make you everybody else, means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting. - e.e.cummings We cannot change the past, but we can change our attitude toward it. Uproot guilt and plant forgiveness. Tear out arrogance and seed humility. Exchange love for hate --- thereby, making the present comfortable and the future promising. - Maya Angelou There is a certain kind of peace that is not merely the absence of war. It is larger than that. The peace I am thinking of is not at the mercy of history's rule, nor is it a passive surrender to the status quo. The peace I am thinking of is the dance of an open mind when it engages another equally open one -- an activity that occurs most naturally, most often in the reading/writing world we live in. Accessible as it is, this particular kind of peace warrants vigilance. - Toni Morrison, The Dancing Mind (1996) The pioneers of a warless world are the young men (and women) who refuse military service. - Albert Einstein Chaos is a name for any order that produces confusion in our minds. - George Santayana Non-violence is a very powerful weapon. Most people don't understand the power of non-violence and tend to be amazed by the whole idea. Those who have been involved in bringing about change and see the difference between violence and non-violence are firmly committed to a lifetime of non-violence, not because it is easy or because it is cowardly, but because it is an effective and very powerful way. - Cesar Chavez To resort to power one need not be violent, and to speak to conscience one need not be meek. The most effective action both resorts to power and engages conscience. Nonviolent actions does not have to get others to be nice. It can in effect force them to consult their consciences. Nor does it have to petition those in power to do something about a situation. It can face the authorities with a new fact and say: Accept this new situation which we have created. - Barbara Deming Non-violence, which is the quality of the heart, cannot come by an appeal to the brain. - Cesar Chavez War is, at first, the hope that one will be better off; next, the expectation that the other fellow will be worse off; then, the satisfaction that he isn't any better off; and, finally, the surprise at everyone's being worse off. - Karl Kraus (1874-1936) In every child who is born, no matter what circumstances, and of no matter what parents, the potentiality of the human race is born again: and in him, too, once more, and of each of us, our terrific responsibility toward human life; toward the utmost idea of goodness, of the horror of terror, and of God. - James Agee Always forgive your enemies. Nothing annoys them more. - Oscar Wilde The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality. - Dante Accurst be he that first invented war. - Christopher Marlowe (Tamburlaine) Those who are ready to sacrifice freedom for security ultimately will lose both. - Abraham Lincoln I believe we are on the edge of a quantum leap into a whole new way of organizing and living as a human family. - Mairead Corrigan Maguire Freedom is actually a bigger game than power. Power is about what you can control. Freedom is about what you can unleash. - Harriet Rubin They make a desert and call it peace. - Tactitus The fragrance always remains in the hand that gives the rose. - Heda Bejar A peace that comes from fear and not from the heart is the opposite of peace. - Gersonides If you live alone, whose feet will you wash? - St. Basil If we do not change our direction we are likely to end up where we are headed for. - Chinese Proverb In the path of our happiness shall we find the learning for which we have chosen this lifetime. - Richard Bach Nonviolence doesn't always work -- but violence never does. - Madge Michaels-Cyrus Until lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunters. - African Proverb Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds them. We live by the death of others. We are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men. - Leonardo Da Vinci If you want to make peace, you don't talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies. - Moshe Dayan Of all the frictional resistances, the one that most retards human movement is ignorance. - Nikola Tesla Forge thy tongue on an anvil of truth and what flies up, though it be but a spark, will have light. - Pindar |
Articles & News: In the works now: NAFTA on Steroids News A foreign cartel of BIG CORPORATISTS is convening in San Diego this week to scheme the world's biggest and worst trade alliance ever. The "... negotiators have proposed new rights for Big Pharma and pushed into the text aspects of the Stop Online Piracy Act, which would limit Internet freedom, despite the derailing of SOPA in Congress earlier this year thanks to public activism. In June a text of the TPP investment chapter was leaked, revealing that US negotiators are even pushing to expand NAFTA’s notorious corporate tribunals, which have been used to attack domestic public interest laws." San Onofre: Do we really need it? Article SD UNION TRIBUNE - The latest report on the outage at the San Onofre. - Both stakeholders in San Onofre and critics of nuclear power say the start of a summer without the twin-reactor plant has forced a new accounting for its costs and benefits. - The utility industry and the state’s main grid operator are "considering a range of existing and new alternatives for mitigating the impacts of a long-term or permanent shutdown at San Onofre," said Stephanie McCorkle, a spokeswoman for the California Independent System Operator.
Bitch Session - The GOP war on Women, etc. Article By Kit-Bacon Gressitt of Fallbrook. Women have so many insults and attacks to combat from the angry right wing nowdays. "For example, Rep. Darrel Issa's House Oversight Committee hearing on female contraception with an all-male panel and his utter failure to understand why there was anything wrong with that. And awareness of such brutal prejudice as that toward women in the military is growing, with the release of such information sources as the new documentary on rape in the U.S. military, 'Invisible War.'"
U.S. abandoning role as champion of human rights Article By Jimmy Carter - "Revelations that top officials are targeting people to be assassinated abroad, including American citizens, are only the most recent, disturbing proof of how far our nation’s violation of human rights has extended. This development began after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and has been sanctioned and escalated by bipartisan executive and legislative actions, without dissent from the general public. As a result, our country can no longer speak with moral authority on these critical issues. -- While the country has made mistakes in the past, the widespread abuse of human rights over the last decade has been a dramatic change from the past." NEW YORK TIMES
We are guaranteeing another Great Depression Article By Paul KRUGMAN - NY Times - The GREAT DEPRESSION "...started with a banking crisis in a small European country (Austria). Austria tried to step in with a bank rescue - but the spiraling cost of the rescue put the government's own solvency in doubt. Austria's troubles shouldn't have been big enough to have large effects on the world economy, but in practice they created a panic that spread around the world. Sound familiar? -- And it's happening again, both in Europe and in America."

On Wednesday 20 June, 2012 17-year-old Brittany Trilford of Wellington, New Zealand addressed 130 heads of state at the opening plenary of the Rio+20 UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This is her remarkable speech. This was the largest United Nation's conference in its history.
Most profound speech by a 12 yr old child
This is an incredible video of a Canadian girl who spoke to the United Nations and left them completely silent and speechless for six minutes. Her name is Severn Cullis-Suzuki, and her speech was given at a U.N. assembly in Brazil when she was twelve years old. She had raised all the money to travel to the delegation, five thousand miles from her home, herself. Her father, geneticist and environmental activist David Suzuki, is a third-generation Japanese Canadian. Obama professor: 'The President must be defeated' Article One of President Barack Obama's former professors appears to have turned against him, according to a recent YouTube video. "President Obama must be defeated in the coming election," Roberto Unger, a longtime professor at Harvard Law School who taught Obama, said in a video posted on May 22. "He has failed to advance the progressive cause in the United States."
Boehner distribued tobacco checks on House floor
What Rep. John Boehner did is a criminal offense - and he shamefully admited it: Boehner distributed campaign contributions from tobacco industry lobbyists on the House floor as House members were weighing how to vote on tobacco subsidies. In a 1996 documentary by PBS called The People and the Power Game, Boehner said "They asked me to give out a half dozen checks quickly before we got to the end of the month and I complied. And I did it on the House floor, which I regret. I should not have done. It's not a violation of the House rules, but it's a practice that‘s gone on here for a long time ..." Jeremy Scahill Calls President Obama A Murderer Article Weighing in on President Obama's targeted drone strikes in the Middle East, journalist Jeremy Scahill did not mince words. During his appearance on MSNBC's "Up With Chris Hayes" Saturday morning, Scahill repeatedly said that such attacks, when they killed innocent civilians, amounted to "murder." -- Asked by Hayes why he would use such a "loaded" word to describe the strikes, Scahill responded at length. -- "If you go to the village of Al-Majalah in Yemen, where I was, and you see the unexploded clusterbombs and you have the list and photographic evidence, as I do--the women and children that represented the vast majority of the deaths in this first strike that Obama authorized on Yemen--those people were murdered by President Obama, on his orders, because there was believed to be someone from Al Qaeda in that area. There's only one person that's been identified that had any connection to Al Qaeda there. And 21 women and 14 children were killed in that strike and the U.S. tried to cover it up."
Europe: Banking Armageddon awaiting? News Analysis by Credit Suisse estimates that up to 58% of the value of Europe's banks could be wiped out by the departure of the 'peripheral' countries. Even if the single currency remains intact, some 1.3tn of credit could be sucked out of the system as banks retrench to their home markets, unwinding years of financial integration, the Credit Suisse analysis warns.
Witness: Romney impersonated a police officer News By Joe Conason - "When Mitt Romney was a college freshman, he told fellow residents of his Stanford University dormitory that he sometimes disguised himself as a police officer – a crime in many states, including Michigan and California, where he then lived. And he had the uniform on display as proof. - So recalls Robin Madden, who had also just arrived as a freshman, the startling incident began when Romney called him and two or three other residents into his room, saying, "Come up, I want to show you something." When they entered Romney's room, "and laid out on his bed was a Michigan State Trooper's uniform."
Green Party candidate Stein would pardon Manning News Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein says she would immediately pardon Bradley Manning, lauds his alleged efforts to bring light to war crimes, and criticizes the Obama administration for its aggressive crackdown on whistle-blowers.
Bully Willard Mitt Romney: LORD of the LIES Article Here's the key sentence in Jason Horowitz’s meticulously reported story of Mitt Romney's sadistic assault on John Lauber, a younger, apparently closeted gay student at the prestigious private Cranbrook School when he was a teen: "As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors." As one former classmate described Romney's leadership of the incident, it was "like Lord of the Flies." Romney has a dark character flaw.
Our firefighters deserve health care News Because wildfire is more common from May to October, most firefighters are seasonally employed. More than 90% of us return year after year and we often work the equivalent of a full year in 6-7 months. Despite this -- and despite putting our lives on the line every day -- they still don't have the opportunity to buy into a government health care plan even at the most basic level.

Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of students and their allies used the high-profile event to press demands for a freeze in post-secondary tuition fees and an end to police and state repression. -- The government of Premier Jean Charest answered with an unprecedented police mobilization that one Montreal Gazette reporter called "staggering." Thousands of police were omnipresent in the Montreal's subway system and at major intersections throughout the four days.

"And in tonight's episode of 'How Weird is Mitt Romney?' Mitt Romney has a thing for men in uniform. He has always wanted to be one," MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell said on the Wednesday night broadcast of his MSNBC show "The Last Word." Does Romney have a personality disorder, or is he just a boorish bully?

Gay Marriage Again on Ballot in Maine News NEW YORK TIMES - "hree years after voters in Maine rejected same-sex marriage, they will consider the matter again in November. This time, advocates say they have reason for optimism. They point to a shift in public opinion, the personal support for same-sex marriage voiced last month by President Obama and what they believe is an effective door-to-door persuasion campaign throughout the state. In addition, the vote will take place in a presidential election year, when more young people, who overwhelmingly support gay marriage, are likely to turn out than in an off year.

The naked face of a police state in America
Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis - In this video, now gone viral nationwide, a group of college students are huddled on the ground in a defensive position at UC Davis on November 18. UC police Lt. John Pike, then casually douses them with a chemical agent. Bystanders who were simply watching what was going on are also exposed. - If the police had legal grounds to make arrests, it seems apparent from the video that little or no force was necessary to achieve that goal. The students are obviously not a threat to the officers. It appears that the heavily armored riot police could have simply grabbed them and put them in flexi-cuffs had they chosen to do so. That means that this entire assault appears to be a perfect example of excessive force. WmJmmnMkuEM Late-breaking news: This just in ... News

Approximately 80,000 people are killed as a direct result of the blast, and another 35,000 are injured. At least another 60,000 would be dead by the end of the year from the effects of the fallout. There were 90,000 buildings in Hiroshima before the bomb was dropped; only 28,000 remained after the bombing.
