This 'N That

The wolf shall also dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.
- Isaiah 11:6

If all the Churches of Europe closed their doors until the drums ceased rolling they would act as a most powerful reminder that though the glory of war is a famous and ancient glory, it is not the final glory of God.
- George Bernard Shaw

If we emphasize the life and works of our greatest contributors . . . people will come to realize that moral courage is bravery of the highest type, and America will be called the "Champion of Peace."
- Senator Spark Matsunaga

If we work in marble, it will perish; if we work upon brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds and instill into them just principles, we are then engraving upon tablets which no time will efface, but will brighten and brighten to all eternity.
- Daniel Webster

We should take care, in inculcating patriotism into our boys and girls, that is a patriotism above the narrow sentiment which usually stops at one's country, and thus inspires jealousy and enmity in dealing with others... Our patriotism should be of the wider, nobler kind which recognises justice and reasonableness in the claims of others and which lead our country into comradeship with...the other nations of the world. The first step to this end is to develop peace and goodwill within our borders, by training our youth of both sexes to its practice as their habit of life, so that the jealousies of town against town, class against class and sect against sect no longer exist; and then to extend this good feeling beyond our frontiers towards our neighbours.
- Lord Baden-Powell

Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace.
- Luke 19:42

A spiritual person tries less to be godly than to be deeply human.
- Rev. William Sloan Coffin, Jr.

In the absence of justice, what is sovereignty but organized robbery?
- St. Augustine

The Holy Prophet Mohammed came into this world and taught us: 'That man is a Muslim who never hurts anyone by word or deed, but who works for the benefit and happiness of God's creatures. Belief in God is to love one's fellow men.'
- Abdul Ghaffar Khann

You can no more win a war than win an earthquake.
- Jeanette Rankin

The finger pulls the trigger, but the trigger may also be pulling the finger.
- Dr. Leonard Berkowitz

. . . [T]o live not with hands clenched to grasp, to strike, to hold tight to a life that is always slipping away the more tightly we hold it, but . . . to live with the hands stretched out both to give and receive with gladness.
- (Carl) Frederick Buechner

The destiny of humans cannot be separated from the destiny of earth.
- Thomas Berry

In April, we cannot see sunflowers in France, so we might say the sunflowers do not exist. But the local farmers have already planted thousands of seeds, and when they look at the bare hills, they may be able to see the sunflowers already. The sunflowers are there. They lack only the conditions of sun, heat, rain and July. Just because we cannot see them does not mean that they do not exist.
- Thich Nhat Hanh

Until lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunters.
- African Proverb

The absence of risk is a sure sign of mediocrity.
- Charles de Foucauld

The story of the human race is characterized by efforts to get along much more than by violent disputes, although it's the latter that make the history books. Violence is actually exceptional. The human race has survived because of cooperation, not aggression.
- Gerard Vanderhaar

Why does man have reason if he can only be influenced by violence?
- Leo Tolstoy

Nobody realizes that some people expend a tremendous amount of energy merely to be normal.
- Albert Camus

The peace process we all aim for will not necessarily be a result of the mere signing of a treaty or agreement. It must become a matter of our everyday lives, so that peace settles and lasts and becomes supported by everybody. We therefore have to give peace all the required care and preserve it and promote it.
- King Hassan II of Morocco (1929-1999)

With each dawn, fill us with your love that we may sing and rejoice all our days. Give us joy to balance our affliction, for the times when we know misfortune.
- Psalm 90:14-17

What good is it to me that Mary gave birth to the son of God fourteen hundred years ago, and I do not also give birth to the Son of God in my time and in my culture? We are all meant to be mothers of God. God is always needing to be born.
- Meister Eckhart

I'd like someone to mention the day that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to give his life serving others. I'd like somebody to say that day, that Martin Luther King tried to love somebody. I want you to say that day, that I tried to be right on the war question. I want you to be able to say that day, that I did try to feed the hungry . . . I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity. Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice; say that I was a drum major for peace; I was a drum major for righteousness . . . I want to leave a committed life behind.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

It is penance to work, to give oneself to others, to endure the pinpricks of community living.
- Dorothy Day

Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it stands than to anything on which it is poured.

War is an act of violence pushed to its utmost limits.
- Major General Carl von Clausewitz, 1832

Poetry is an act of peace. Peace goes into the making of a poet as flour goes into the making of bread.
- Pablo Neruda, Memoirs (Confieso Que He Vivido: Memorias) (1974)

Violence produces only something resembling justice, but it distances people from the possibility of living justly, without violence.
- Leo Tolstoy

When someone steals another's clothes, we call them a thief. Should we not give the same name to one who could clothe the naked and does not? The bread in your cupboard belongs to the hungry; the coat unused in your closet belongs to the one who needs it; the shoes rotting in your closet belong to the one who has no shoes; the money which you hoard up belongs to the poor.
- Basil the Great

Europe: Banking Armageddon awaiting?
News
Analysis by Credit Suisse estimates that up to 58% of the value of Europe's banks could be wiped out by the departure of the 'peripheral' countries. Even if the single currency remains intact some €1.3tn of credit could be sucked out of the system as banks retrench to their home markets, unwinding years of financial integration, the Credit Suisse analysis warns.

Bully Willard Mitt Romney: LORD of the LIES
Article
Here's the key sentence in Jason Horowitz’s meticulously reported story of Mitt Romney's sadistic assault on John Lauber, a younger, apparently closeted gay student at the prestigious private Cranbrook School when he was a teen: "As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors." As one former classmate described Romney's leadership of the incident, it was "like Lord of the Flies." Romney has a dark character flaw.

Jeremy Scahill Calls President Obama A Murderer
News
Weighing in on President Obama's targeted drone strikes in the Middle East, journalist Jeremy Scahill did not mince words. During his appearance on MSNBC's "Up With Chris Hayes" Saturday morning, Scahill repeatedly said that such attacks, when they killed innocent civilians, amounted to "murder." -- Asked by Hayes why he would use such a "loaded" word to describe the strikes, Scahill responded at length. -- "If you go to the village of Al-Majalah in Yemen, where I was, and you see the unexploded clusterbombs and you have the list and photographic evidence, as I do--the women and children that represented the vast majority of the deaths in this first strike that Obama authorized on Yemen--those people were murdered by President Obama, on his orders, because there was believed to be someone from Al Qaeda in that area. There's only one person that's been identified that had any connection to Al Qaeda there. And 21 women and 14 children were killed in that strike and the U.S. tried to cover it up."

Edith Windsor, Octogenarian Widow, Beats Down DOMA
News
Within one week's time, there have been three major federal court ruling against DOMA and for same-sex marriage. In New York, a federal district judge just ruled that DOMA was unconstitutional in causing Edith Windsor, the 82-year-old widow of Thea Spyer, to pay $363,000 in estate taxes after the death of her wife which a heterosexual spouse wouldn't have had to pay. Windsor is a spry, delightful woman whose energy and enthusiasm make her seem more like a teenage activist than a woman in the ninth decade of her life, took her case to court and won. Now she goes directly to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Twelve-Year-Old Money Reformer Tops a Million View

The youtube video of 12 year old Victoria Grant speaking at the Public Banking in America conference last month has gone viral, topping a million views on various websites. -- Monetary reform—the contention that governments, not banks, should create and lend a nation's money—has rarely even made the news, so this is a first.  Either the times they are a-changi', or Victoria managed to frame the message in a way that was so simple and clear that even a child could understand it. -- Basically, her message was that banks create money "out of thin air" and lend it to people and governments at interest.  If governments borrowed from their own banks, they could keep the interest and save a lot of money for the taxpayers. She said her own country of Canada actually did this, from 1939 to 1974.  During that time, the government's debt was low and sustainable, and it funded all sorts of remarkable things.  Only when the government switched to borrowing privately did it acquire a crippling national debt.

How Did Mitt Romney Get So Obscenely Rich?

Economist, and former Sec. of Labor, Robert Reich explains how. Is what Romney did to American workers ethical? Should such a man be in the White House?

General shocks America with outburst on suicide
News
Maj. Gen. Dana Pittard commands Fort Bliss, one the nation's largest Army bases, made a comment so blunt and ignorant, he has raised eyebrows throughout the military. "I have now come to the conclusion that suicide is an absolutely selfish act. I am personally fed up with soldiers who are choosing to take their own lives so that others can clean up their mess. Be an adult, act like an adult, and deal with your real-life problems like the rest of us."

Bill Maher Creates Mitt Romney 'Wifer' Controversy

Comedian BILL MAHER - "I mean, Mitt Romney comes from a Mormon background. I don't know how many wives he has. I'm not saying that I believe in that, I'm just saying he was born on a Mormon compound. I'm not a 'Wifer' but for some reason he's never shown his original marriage certificate." Watch the video

Mitt Romney: the Demon Barber of Wall Street

Music by Stephen Sondheim, thank you very much. Parody lyrics by Roy Zimmerman and Melanie Harby. Song tells how student Mitt Romney and his gang of bullies tackled a gay classmate in prep school and cut off his long hair; and to today as he advances to slashing of benefits, jobs, and regulations to enrich his buddies at Bain capital at expense of the steelworkers when he was in business. Same ol' boorish bully. No compassion. No self-control. Immature and self-centered.

Black Leaders and Gay Advocates March in Step
Article
For years, gay rights organizations and major civil rights organizations viewed each other warily. African-American leaders often saw the gay rights groups as insensitive to racial concerns, and some resented the movement's use of civil rights language to make the case for same-sex marriage. But since the relationship reached something of a crisis with the passage of Proposition 8, California’s ballot initiative against same-sex marriage, in 2008, leaders in both movements have made an effort to bring their groups closer together.

By David Zirin - THE NATION - Security forces are busily militarizing the urban terrain. Olympics security officials recently unboxed the military-grade Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD), an eardrum-shattering weapon that has been war-zone tested in Iraq. There are plans to station surface-to-air missiles on the roofs of London apartment buildings. The Royal Navy's biggest warship will sit along the Thames. Typhoon jets and Lynx helicopters will be ready for action. Scotland Yard has stockpiled more than 10,000 plastic bullets. Londoners were told that the Olympics would cost £2.4 billion. Ted Olson Interview With Fox News Chris Wallace

Wallace, insinuating that Gay Marriage is judicial activism, asks where is it in the Constitution that permits gay mariage. "Where is the right to interracial marriage in the Constitution" asked Ted Olsen of Wallace. Brilliant arguments by Olson. When Wallace insists the voters have the right to outlaw gay marriage, Olson asks if it would be constitutional for the voters to force blacks to drink at separate water fountains.

The naked face of a police state in America

Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis - In this video, now gone viral nationwide, a group of college students are huddled on the ground in a defensive position at UC Davis on November 18. UC police Lt. John Pike, then casually douses them with a chemical agent. Bystanders who were simply watching what was going on are also exposed. - If the police had legal grounds to make arrests, it seems apparent from the video that little or no force was necessary to achieve that goal. The students are obviously not a threat to the officers. It appears that the heavily armored riot police could have simply grabbed them and put them in flexi-cuffs had they chosen to do so. That means that this entire assault appears to be a perfect example of excessive force.

50 years ago, JFK forced integration of Ole Miss
News
Fifty years ago James Meredith became the first black man to be admitted into the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). October 1, 1962. Robert Kennedy called in 500 U.S. Marshals to take control, who were supported by the 70th Army Engineer Combat Battalion from Ft Campbell, Kentucky. They created a tent camp and kitchen for the US Marshals. To bolster law enforcement, President John F. Kennedy sent in U.S. Army military police from the 503rd Military Police Battalion, and called in troops from the Mississippi Army National Guard and the U.S. Border Patrol as well. In the violent clash, two people died, including the French journalist Paul Guihard on assignment for the London Daily Sketch. He was found dead behind the Lyceum building with a gunshot wound to the back. One hundred-sixty US Marshals, one-third of the group, were injured in the melee, and 40 soldiers and National Guardsmen were wounded.

A nihilistic war crime: Hiroshima Aug. 6, 1945
Article
Aug. 6, 1945, at 8:16 a.m. Japanese time, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world's first atom bomb, over the city of Hiroshima. Approximately 80,000 people are killed as a direct result of the blast, and another 35,000 are injured. At least another 60,000 would be dead by the end of the year from the effects of the fallout. There were 90,000 buildings in Hiroshima before the bomb was dropped; only 28,000 remained after the bombing. Of the city's 200 doctors before the explosion; only 20 were left alive or capable of working. There were 1,780 nurses before—only 150 remained who were able to tend to the sick and dying.
