Articles & News: VOTER Guide - Our progressive recommendations Article Basically, the ProgressivePost follows the official voter recommendations of the Democratic Party. One notable exception is for US Congress in the 49th District, where we we support Dick Eiden - Independent. We support EIDEN because he is such a long-term proven progressive leader here in North County. (See article elsewhere in PP). Also, we find new hope with U.S. Senate candidate Mike Strimling.
My Letter which the NC Times refuses to print Article As a frequent writer of letters to the editor with liberal perspective, I have often encountered censorship and obstacles in getting my letters published. I do not give up. Probing and challenging the editors of the North County Times, I have exposed inconsistencies in their policies and prejudices. The following is an example of one of my letters which has been refused by the NC Times: [Joe Howard Crews]
Does Romney have a dark character flaw? News Every once in a while a story comes along that captures a candidate and what he represents. And The Washington Post just did that by revealing a dark incident from Mitt Romney's past. At 18, he led a group of boys who hunted down younger student John Lauber because he seemed gay to them.1 They held Lauber down, screaming and crying, while Romney cut off his dyed-blonde hair. It's something that haunted Lauber and those who participated in his assault decades later. But Romney laughed it off in a radio interview last week.
Interesting Democrat running against D. Feinstein News Dianne Feinstein has an interesting Democrat running against her -- Mike Strimling, who is running on a Tax the Rich platform. "Tax The Rich. I run to allow you to vote for your beliefs. The rich have attacked the middle class. Taxes were four times higher on millionaires from 1942 to 1982—when America was strongest. Even in 1918, taxes on millionaires were 77%. Now, Romney pays only 15% on millions! You pay more! When the rich were taxed, they kept their money invested, creating jobs. Now, they yank money out of American jobs. The result is clear. The richest 1% own more wealth than the bottom 90% combined. Tax cuts for the rich have bankrupted America."
The ProgressivePost strongly endorses Dick Eiden News The ProgressivePost strongly endorses Dick Eiden, Independent, for Congress in the 49th Congressional District race. Our reasons for this are very clear: (1) - Not in our living memory has a candidate with Dick Eiden’s progressive and humanitarian values run for this office. Over the decades this district has grown into one of the most beautiful, desirable and prosperous areas of California, all the while poorly represented in Congress by men of less than ethical and democratic principles. Dick Eiden has a long history of high morals, ethics and dedication to the democratic principles which make are mandatory for enlightened, progressive leadership. (read more).
Anti-Prop 29 Ad Rotten to the Core! Article I saw an ad against Proposition 29 one day while I was eating breakfast. Even though the sound was off, I found it to be one of the most vile, despicable and offensive campaign ads I have ever seen in my entire life! I was going to vote Yes on Prop 29 before, but now I will definitely vote Yes, and without even reading the full content of the proposition! Chuck Lowery says NO to Props E and F! Court rules official is immune for torture policy Article Prisoner, US citizen JOSE PADILLA, "detained as an enemy combatant after he was arrested by the Bush administration in May 2002, was denied contact with his lawyer, his family or anyone else outside the military brig for almost two years and kept in detention for almost four. His jailers made death threats, shackled him for hours, forced him into painful stress positions, subjected him to noxious fumes that hurt his eyes and nose and deafening noises at all hours, denied him care for serious illness and more. -- This treatment was indisputably cruel, inhumane and shocking, in breach of the minimum standard required for anyone in American custody, especially a citizen." Yet the 9th Circuit Court has ruled officials have immunity.
Bradley Manning: a show trial of state secrecy Article By Michael Ratner - Bradley Manning: a show trial of state secrecy. On 24 April, a hearing in one of the most important court martial cases in decades [took] place in Fort Meade, Maryland. The accused faces life in prison for the 22 charges against him, which include "aiding the enemy" and "transmitting defense information". Yet, in spite of the grave implications, not to mention the press and public's first amendment right of full and open access to criminal trials, no outside parties will have access to the evidence, the court documents, court orders or off-the-record arguments that will ultimately decide his fate. Under these circumstances, whatever the outcome of the case, the loser will be the transparency necessary for democratic government, accountable courts and faith in our justice system.
Those Revolting Frenchmen - and Greeks too! Article By Paul Krugman - NY Times - "What's wrong with the prescription of spending cuts as the remedy for Europe's ills? ... claims that slashing government spending would somehow encourage consumers and businesses to spend more have been overwhelmingly refuted by the experience of the past two years. So spending cuts in a depressed economy just make the depression deeper."

Libertarian Gary Johnson runs for President 2012 News A former Republican governor of New Mexico, now a libertarian, seems the assured nominee of his party for US President. He supports the de-criminalization of marijuana, marriage equality for gays and lesbians, and the immediate cessation of the wars in Afghanistan and elsewhere. His comment on Obama: "To me, Obama's been a real disappointment on civil liberties: marriage equality, getting out of the wars, getting out of Afghanistan — he doubled down on Afghanistan -- drug reform, signing the National Defense Authorization Act with the caveat that now you and I as U.S. citizens can now be detained without being charged."
Republicans stonewall Violence against Women bill
Attorney General Eric Holder just called it "inconceivable" that Congress has not yet reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act. "For the life of me, I cannot begin to understand why this is something that is a debate within Congress," he said, "It is inconceivable to me now that we are in the process of a debate about something that has proven so effective and is clearly so needed for the future. It must be passed, and it must be passed soon," Holder said. Watch it:

The Government Is Not the Country Article MEMORIAL DAY - "One of the bromides we hear every Memorial Day is how countless American soldiers have died for their country. That’s nothing but sheer nonsense. Many of them died not for their country but rather for their government. There’s a difference. - Unfortunately, many Americans conflate the government and the country. In their minds, they are one and the same thing. Thus, for them when soldiers die for their government, they also die for their country." By Jacob G. Hornberger
Manning Video:American troops slaughter civilians
Army intel analyst Bradley Manning faces decades in prison for allegedly leaking this video of a U.S. helicopter attack killing 11 civilians and wounding two children in Baghdad, Iraq. Why we endorse Lori Saldaña for Congress

She supports returning wealth and job opportunities to the middle class and working poor. Her leading opponent, Scott Peters, sends conflicting messages on these issues.
OCCUPY Global: Extreme weather & climate change
Occupy Global - issues its first manifesto: "Extreme weather is fueled by climate change.: The statement – the Global May Manifesto – calls for systemic change in the global economy: the radical democratisation of international institutions like the IMF, BIS and UN; the replacement of the G8/20 with a democratic UN assembly; a system of global taxation on financial transactions; and for the abolition of tax havens. It does not represent the position of any local or city assembly; rather it is offered for their consideration. -- Endorsed by consensus on 4 May 2012 by the International Assembly, this statement has been in development since January 2012. It was a process that has seen thousands of people from six continents and hundreds of cities participating in the discussion and planning for the international days of protests during the month of May.

An alternative view of Memorial Day
This Memorial Day we must remember those leaders who lied to us and the dead soldiers, enticing them into war to enrich the Military Industrial Congressional comples. It is time for Christians to slay the golden calf of the military. Christians should stop joining the military. They should stop encouraging their young men to enlist. They should stop being military chaplains and medics. American churches must be demilitarized. Prophetic words from Chalmers Johnson
San Diego's own sage, author, scholar and prophet,Chalmers Johnson, gave his take on the Military-Industrial Complex, American defense spending and the coming downfall of the Empire years before it happened. Johnson is the author of "Blowback" and "The Sorrows of Empire".

Ted Olson Interview With Fox News Chris Wallace
Wallace, insinuating that Gay Marriage is judicial activism, asks where is it in the Constitution that permits gay mariage. "Where is the right to interracial marriage in the Constitution" asked Ted Olsen of Wallace. Brilliant arguments by Olson. When Wallace insists the voters have the right to outlaw gay marriage, Olson asks if it would be constitutional for the voters to force blacks to drink at separate water fountains. The naked face of a police state in America
Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis - In this video, now gone viral nationwide, a group of college students are huddled on the ground in a defensive position at UC Davis on November 18. UC police Lt. John Pike, then casually douses them with a chemical agent. Bystanders who were simply watching what was going on are also exposed. - If the police had legal grounds to make arrests, it seems apparent from the video that little or no force was necessary to achieve that goal. The students are obviously not a threat to the officers. It appears that the heavily armored riot police could have simply grabbed them and put them in flexi-cuffs had they chosen to do so. That means that this entire assault appears to be a perfect example of excessive force. WmJmmnMkuEM Ted Olson Interview With Fox News Chris Wallace
