The first question which the priest and the Levite asked [on the Jericho Road] was: ‘If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?' The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins A great many people think they are thinking when they are just rearranging their prejudices. We are, each of us angels with only one wing; and we can only fly by embracing one another. We are convinced that non-violence supports you if you have a just and moral cause...If you use violence, you have to sell part of yourself for that violence. Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action. I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones. To see the earth as it truly is, small and blue in that eternal silence where it floats, is to see riders on the earth together, brothers on that bright loveliness in the eternal cold - brothers who know now they are truly brothers. Everyone takes the limits of his own vision for the limits of the world. Do your work as though you had a thousand years to live, & as if you were to die tomorrow. Nonviolence which is a quality of the heart, cannot come by an appeal to the brain. A bad peace is even worse than war. Those for whom peace is no more than a dream are asleep to the future. Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him. Someday they'll give a war and nobody will come. Fear less, hope more, If there is to be any peace it will come through being, not having. No matter how big a nation is, it is no stronger that its weakest people, and as long as you keep a person down, some part of you has to be down there to hold him down, so it means you cannot soar as you might otherwise. To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best day and night to make you everybody else, means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting. If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner. I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant. The finger pulls the trigger, but the trigger may also be pulling the finger. The first thing to be disrupted by our committment to nonviolence will be not the system but our own lives. War is an act of violence pushed to its utmost limits. The direct use of force is such a poor solution to any problem, it is generally employed only by small children and large nations. The good life is one inspired by love and guided by knowledge. God looks unjust but is not. God asks more from those who more is given. They are not greater or better; they have greater responsibility. They must give more service. Live to serve. You know, if people are not pacifists, it's not their fault. It's because society puts them in that spot. You've got to change it. You don't just change a man - you've got to change his environment as you do it. If we work in marble, it will perish; if we work upon brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds and instill into them just principles, we are then engraving upon tablets which no time will efface, but will brighten and brighten to all eternity. The pursuit of peace and progress cannot end in a few years in either victory or defeat. The pursuit of peace and progress, with its trials and errors, its successes and setbacks, can never be relaxed and never abandoned. If we just worry about the big picture, we are powerless. So my secret is to start right away doing whatever little work I can do. I try to give joy to one person in the morning, and remove the suffering of one person in the afternoon. If you and your friends do not despise the small work, a million people will remove a lot of suffering. That is the secret. Start right now. People have power when other people think they have power. Past the seeker as he prayed came the crippled and the beggar and the beaten. And seeing them...he cried, "Great God, how is it that a loving creator can see such things and yet do nothing about them?"...God said, "I did do something. I made you." Why does man have reason if he can only be influenced by violence? If it were proved to me that in making war, my ideal had a chance of being realized, I would still say "No" to war. For one does not create human society on mounds of corpses. As long as ever you can. Attorney General Eric Holder just called it "inconceivable" that Congress has not yet reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act. "For the life of me, I cannot begin to understand why this is something that is a debate within Congress," he said, "It is inconceivable to me now that we are in the process of a debate about something that has proven so effective and is clearly so needed for the future. Army intel analyst Bradley Manning faces decades in prison for allegedly leaking this video of a U.S. helicopter attack killing 11 civilians and wounding two children in Baghdad, Iraq. The Army covered up the evidence and declared the war crime "justified". Now they say that exposing the massacre is criminal.

Why we endorse Lori Saldaña for Congress

This Memorial Day we must remember those leaders who lied to us and the dead soldiers, enticing them into war to enrich the Military Industrial Congressional comples. It is time for Christians to slay the golden calf of the military. Christians should stop joining the military. They should stop encouraging their young men to enlist. They should stop being military chaplains and medics. American churches must be demilitarized.

Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis - In this video, now gone viral nationwide, a group of college students are huddled on the ground in a defensive position at UC Davis on November 18. UC police Lt. John Pike, then casually douses them with a chemical agent. Bystanders who were simply watching what was going on are also exposed. - If the police had legal grounds to make arrests, it seems apparent from the video that little or no force was necessary to achieve that goal. The students are obviously not a threat to the officers. It appears that the heavily armored riot police could have simply grabbed them and put them in flexi-cuffs had they chosen to do so. That means that this entire assault appears to be a perfect example of excessive force.

I saw an ad against Proposition 29 one day while I was eating breakfast. Even though the sound was off, I found it to be one of the most vile, despicable and offensive campaign ads I have ever seen in my entire life! I was going to vote Yes on Prop 29 before, but now I will definitely vote Yes, and without even reading the full content of the proposition!
