This 'N ThatThe Bible has a very meaningful expression: The Spirit makes all things new. We are those who grow old, and we want everything done to our aged standards. The Spirit is never old; the Spirit is always young. - Oscar RomeroEach person has inside a basic decency and goodness. If he listens to it and acts on it, he is giving a great deal of what it is the world needs most. It is not complicated but it takes courage. It takes courage for a person to listen to his own goodness and act on it. - Pablo Casals Why not go out on a limb? That's where the fruit is. - Will Rogers It is folly to punish your neighbor by fire when you live next door. - Publius Syrus Angry heart -- you have no chance against my prayers. - Mary Moreno Someday they'll give a war and nobody will come. - Carl Sandburg It's a bit embarrassing to have been concerned with the human problem all one's life and find at the end that one has no more to offer by way of advice than "try to be a little better." - Aldous Huxley Murder and capital punishment are not opposites that cancel one another, but similars that breed their kind. It is the deed that teaches not the name we give it. - George Bernard Shaw Capitalism is the extraordinary belief that the nastiest of men, for the nastiest of reasons, will somehow work for the benefit of us all. - John Maynard Keynes There have been periods of history in which episodes of terrible violence occurred but for which the word violence was never used...Violence is shrouded in justifying myths that lend it moral legitimacy, and these myths for the most part kept people from recognizing the violence for what it was. The people who burned witches at the stake never for one moment thought of their act as violence; rather they though of it as an act of divinely mandated righteousness. The same can be said of most of the violence we humans have ever committed. - Gil Bailie A free society is one where it is safe to be unpopular. - Adlai Stevenson Man's mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions. - Oliver Wendell Holmes Truly you have formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother's womb. I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made; wonderful are your works. - Psalm 13:9 I believe we are on the edge of a quantum leap into a whole new way of organizing and living as a human family. - Mairead Corrigan Maguire There is no such thing as defeat in non-violence. - Cesar Chavez Violence in the voice is often only the death rattle of reason in the throat. - John Boyes The real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. - Thich Nhat Hanh Nonviolence doesn't always work -- but violence never does. - Madge Michaels-Cyrus Abba Poeman said about Abba Prior that every single day he made a fresh beginning. - Desert Fathers and Mothers By logic and reason we die hourly. By imagination we live. - John Butler Yeats The wolf shall also dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. - Isaiah 11:6 The longer we listen to one another - with real attention - the more commonality we will find in all our lives. That is, if we are careful to exchange with one another life stories and not simply opinions. - Barbara Deming Why does man have reason if he can only be influenced by violence? - Leo Tolstoy None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free. - Johan W. von Goethe In the path of our happiness shall we find the learning for which we have chosen this lifetime. - Richard Bach The evils of government are directly proportional to the tolerance of the people. - Frank Kent The dark night is over and dawn has begun. Rise, hope of the ages, arise like the sun! All speech, flow to music; all hearts, beat as one. - John Greenleaf Whittier Peace is that state in which fear of any kind is unknown. - John Buchan The human mind likes a strange idea as little as the body likes a strange protein and resists it with a similar energy. - W.H. Beveridge, British Economist True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power. Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it. - Milan Kundera Peace is not an absence of war, it is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, justice. - Baruch Spinoza Do all the good you can, - By all the means you can, Always forgive your enemies. Nothing annoys them more. - Oscar Wilde If Columbus had an advisory committee he would probably still be at the dock. - Justice Arthur Goldberg Our future on this planet, exposed as it is to nuclear annihilation, depends one one single factor: humanity must make a moral about-face. - Pope John Paul II We should take care, in inculcating patriotism into our boys and girls, that is a patriotism above the narrow sentiment which usually stops at one's country, and thus inspires jealousy and enmity in dealing with others... Our patriotism should be of the wider, nobler kind which recognises justice and reasonableness in the claims of others and which lead our country into comradeship with...the other nations of the world. The first step to this end is to develop peace and goodwill within our borders, by training our youth of both sexes to its practice as their habit of life, so that the jealousies of town against town, class against class and sect against sect no longer exist; and then to extend this good feeling beyond our frontiers towards our neighbours. - Lord Baden-Powell |
Articles & News: MASSIVE May Day protests in Spain News Over one million protested in the streets of Spain last Sunday, and maybe more today - MAY DAY - as Spaniards protest across Spain on against government cuts aimed at tackling a debt crisis that has pushed the country back into recession and sent unemployment close to 25 percent. Bradley Manning: a show trial of state secrecy Article By Michael Ratner - Bradley Manning: a show trial of state secrecy. On 24 April, a hearing in one of the most important court martial cases in decades [took] place in Fort Meade, Maryland. The accused faces life in prison for the 22 charges against him, which include "aiding the enemy" and "transmitting defense information". Yet, in spite of the grave implications, not to mention the press and public's first amendment right of full and open access to criminal trials, no outside parties will have access to the evidence, the court documents, court orders or off-the-record arguments that will ultimately decide his fate. Under these circumstances, whatever the outcome of the case, the loser will be the transparency necessary for democratic government, accountable courts and faith in our justice system.
The education bubble will have to burst Article By Froma Harrop - "Think Americans owe a bundle on their credit card balances? They have $693 billion on their plastic, while they owe more than $1 trillion on student loans, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Think health costs are out of control? They rose only 150 percent from 1990 through 2011. During that period, the cost of attending a four-year college (not including room and board) soared 300 percent." The blowup may be worse than the housing bubble.
The ProgressivePost strongly endorses Dick Eiden News The ProgressivePost strongly endorses Dick Eiden, Independent, for Congress in the 49th Congressional District race. Our reasons for this are very clear: (1) - Not in our living memory has a candidate with Dick Eiden’s progressive and humanitarian values run for this office. Over the decades this district has grown into one of the most beautiful, desirable and prosperous areas of California, all the while poorly represented in Congress by men of less than ethical and democratic principles. Dick Eiden has a long history of high morals, ethics and dedication to the democratic principles which make are mandatory for enlightened, progressive leadership. (read more).
SDG&E in league with Enron crooks Article "When ENRON schemed to manipulate markets and defraud ratepayers, its executives went to jail. BP faces billions of dollars in fines for causing the Gulf Oil spill. When automobile manufacturers sold cars with dangerous defects that killed people, it was their shareholders who paid the price. - Why, then, should SDG&E and its publicly traded parent company, Sempra Energy, expect local ratepayers to pay for its uninsured liability costs for the wildfires that it caused, while its executives get off scott free?" - By Miriam Rafferty: - East County Magazine

Republicans stonewall Violence against Women bill
Attorney General Eric Holder just called it "inconceivable" that Congress has not yet reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act. "For the life of me, I cannot begin to understand why this is something that is a debate within Congress," he said, "It is inconceivable to me now that we are in the process of a debate about something that has proven so effective and is clearly so needed for the future. It must be passed, and it must be passed soon," Holder said. Watch it:
Chinese gov't more responsive to people than US Article "China's 'authoritarian' government is actually more responsive to its people than America's 'elected democratic' government.
... it is in America, not China, where life is regarded as cheap. Americans have lost control of the government, and governments that are not controlled by the people are not democracies." By Dr. Paul Craig Roberts

Québec students in the street rekindling democracy News THE STUDENT movement in Québec is an incredibly important development, with implications that reach well beyond provincial borders. The movement emerged in response to a 75 percent increase in tuition fees to be implemented over the next five years, but it has quickly evolved into something far more significant. The student movement has rekindled the political imagination to a degree not seen since the Quiet Revolution of the 1960s. This is the most troubling and dynamic period in recent Québec history, and the possibility that this energy will foster fundamental social change is very real.
Bank of America - a citadel of corruption Article By Matt Taibbi - "There are two things every American needs to know about Bank of America. - The first is that it's corrupt. This bank has systematically defrauded almost everyone with whom it has a significant business relationship, cheating investors, insurers, homeowners, shareholders, depositors, and the state. It is a giant, raging hurricane of theft and fraud...The second is that all of us, as taxpayers, are keeping that hurricane raging. "

OBAMA abandons LGBT executive order News White House Press Secretary Jay Carney engaged in an eight minute back-and-forth with reporters and insisted that Obama had decided against issuing the much sought after Federal Contractor LGBT Anti Discrimination Executive Order - "I find yesterdays move by Obama insulting reprehensible and inexcusable. Especially given the fact that Lyndon Johnson issued the same exact EO for the civil rights of Black Americans in 1965. - And as for ENDA its been languishing in Congress since the early 70′s so good luck with that." Ted Olson Interview With Fox News Chris Wallace

"Where is the right to interracial marriage in the Constitution" asked Ted Olsen of Wallace. Brilliant arguments by Olson. When Wallace insists the voters have the right to outlaw gay marriage, Olson asks if it would be constitutional for the voters to force blacks to drink at separate water fountains. The Government Is Not the Country Article MEMORIAL DAY - "One of the bromides we hear every Memorial Day is how countless American soldiers have died for their country. That’s nothing but sheer nonsense. Many of them died not for their country but rather for their government. There’s a difference. - Unfortunately, many Americans conflate the government and the country. In their minds, they are one and the same thing. Thus, for them when soldiers die for their government, they also die for their country." By Jacob G. Hornberger
Chuck Lowery says NO to Props E and F! News Oceanside voters: The June 5th election is another big giveaway to FFK's campaign cronies. Vote NO on Props E & F. We can't afford to lose again.
These two propositions will abolish rent control and evict Veterans and other low income people from local mobile home parks, possibly clearing the way for the properties to be razed and replaced with expensive housing. More info: http://www.CitizensagainstEandF.com.
An alternative view of Memorial Day
This Memorial Day we must remember those leaders who lied to us and the dead soldiers, enticing them into war to enrich the Military Industrial Congressional comples. It is time for Christians to slay the golden calf of the military. Christians should stop joining the military. They should stop encouraging their young men to enlist. They should stop being military chaplains and medics. American churches must be demilitarized. Prophetic words from Chalmers Johnson
San Diego's own sage, author, scholar and prophet,Chalmers Johnson, gave his take on the Military-Industrial Complex, American defense spending and the coming downfall of the Empire years before it happened. Johnson is the author of "Blowback" and "The Sorrows of Empire".
The naked face of a police state in America
Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis - In this video, now gone viral nationwide, a group of college students are huddled on the ground in a defensive position at UC Davis on November 18. UC police Lt. John Pike, then casually douses them with a chemical agent. Bystanders who were simply watching what was going on are also exposed. - If the police had legal grounds to make arrests, it seems apparent from the video that little or no force was necessary to achieve that goal. The students are obviously not a threat to the officers. It appears that the heavily armored riot police could have simply grabbed them and put them in flexi-cuffs had they chosen to do so. That means that this entire assault appears to be a perfect example of excessive force. WmJmmnMkuEM Ted Olson Interview With Fox News Chris Wallace
