If he listens to it and acts on it, he is giving a great deal of what it is the world needs most. It is not complicated but it takes courage. It takes courage for a person to listen to his own goodness and act on it. Why not go out on a limb? That's where the fruit is. It is folly to punish your neighbor by fire when you live next door. Angry heart -- you have no chance against my prayers. Someday they'll give a war and nobody will come. It's a bit embarrassing to have been concerned with the human problem all one's life and find at the end that one has no more to offer by way of advice than "try to be a little better." Murder and capital punishment are not opposites that cancel one another, but similars that breed their kind. It is the deed that teaches not the name we give it. Capitalism is the extraordinary belief that the nastiest of men, for the nastiest of reasons, will somehow work for the benefit of us all. There have been periods of history in which episodes of terrible violence occurred but for which the word violence was never used...Violence is shrouded in justifying myths that lend it moral legitimacy, and these myths for the most part kept people from recognizing the violence for what it was. The people who burned witches at the stake never for one moment thought of their act as violence; rather they though of it as an act of divinely mandated righteousness. The same can be said of most of the violence we humans have ever committed. A free society is one where it is safe to be unpopular. Man's mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions. Truly you have formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother's womb. I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made; wonderful are your works. I believe we are on the edge of a quantum leap into a whole new way of organizing and living as a human family. There is no such thing as defeat in non-violence. Violence in the voice is often only the death rattle of reason in the throat. The real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Nonviolence doesn't always work -- but violence never does. Abba Poeman said about Abba Prior that every single day he made a fresh beginning. By logic and reason we die hourly. By imagination we live. The wolf shall also dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. The longer we listen to one another - with real attention - the more commonality we will find in all our lives. That is, if we are careful to exchange with one another life stories and not simply opinions. Why does man have reason if he can only be influenced by violence? None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free. In the path of our happiness shall we find the learning for which we have chosen this lifetime. The evils of government are directly proportional to the tolerance of the people. The dark night is over and dawn has begun. Rise, hope of the ages, arise like the sun! All speech, flow to music; all hearts, beat as one. Peace is that state in which fear of any kind is unknown. The human mind likes a strange idea as little as the body likes a strange protein and resists it with a similar energy. True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power. Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it. Peace is not an absence of war, it is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, justice. Do all the good you can, Always forgive your enemies. Nothing annoys them more. If Columbus had an advisory committee he would probably still be at the dock. Our future on this planet, exposed as it is to nuclear annihilation, depends one one single factor: humanity must make a moral about-face. We should take care, in inculcating patriotism into our boys and girls, that is a patriotism above the narrow sentiment which usually stops at one's country, and thus inspires jealousy and enmity in dealing with others... Our patriotism should be of the wider, nobler kind which recognises justice and reasonableness in the claims of others and which lead our country into comradeship with...the other nations of the world. Attorney General Eric Holder just called it "inconceivable" that Congress has not yet reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act. "For the life of me, I cannot begin to understand why this is something that is a debate within Congress," he said, "It is inconceivable to me now that we are in the process of a debate about something that has proven so effective and is clearly so needed for the future. It must be passed, and it must be passed soon," Holder said. Army intel analyst Bradley Manning faces decades in prison for allegedly leaking this video of a U.S. helicopter attack killing 11 civilians and wounding two children in Baghdad, Iraq. The Army covered up the evidence and declared the war crime "justified". Now they say that exposing the massacre is criminal.

An alternative view of Memorial Day

This Memorial Day we must remember those leaders who lied to us and the dead soldiers, enticing them into war to enrich the Military Industrial Congressional comples. It is time for Christians to slay the golden calf of the military. Christians should stop joining the military. They should stop encouraging their young men to enlist. They should stop being military chaplains and medics. American churches must be demilitarized.

The naked face of a police state in America

Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis - In this video, now gone viral nationwide, a group of college students are huddled on the ground in a defensive position at UC Davis on November 18. UC police Lt. John Pike, then casually douses them with a chemical agent. Bystanders who were simply watching what was going on are also exposed. - If the police had legal grounds to make arrests, it seems apparent from the video that little or no force was necessary to achieve that goal. The students are obviously not a threat to the officers. It appears that the heavily armored riot police could have simply grabbed them and put them in flexi-cuffs had they chosen to do so. That means that this entire assault appears to be a perfect example of excessive force.
