This 'N That

Peace is a gift,
- It is a gift we give to ourselves,

I am part and parcel of the whole and cannot find God apart from the rest of humanity.
- Mohandas Gandhi

If it were proved to me that in making war, my ideal had a chance of being realized, I would still say "No" to war. For one does not create human society on mounds of corpses.
- Louis Lecoin, French pacifist leader

What is the revolution that we need? We need to dissolve the lie that some people have a right to think of other people as their property. And we need at last to form a circle that includes us all, in which all of us are seen as equal... We do not belong to the other, but our lives are linked; we belong in a circle of others.
- Barbara Deming

Aye, fight! But not your neighbor. Fight rather all the things that cause you and your neighbor to fight.
- Mikhail Naim

The pens which write against disarmament are made with the same steel from which guns are made.
- Aristide Briand, French statesman, Nobel Peace Prize, 1926

You can't separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom.
- Malcolm X

Every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.
- Isaiah 40:4-5

The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.
- Hannah Arendt, 20th-century German political philosopher and author

Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty, lies opportunity.
- Albert Einstein

The pursuit of peace and progress cannot end in a few years in either victory or defeat. The pursuit of peace and progress, with its trials and errors, its successes and setbacks, can never be relaxed and never abandoned.
- Dag Hammarskjold (1905-1961)Former UN General Secretary

The belief that we some day shall be able to prevent war is to me one with the belief in the possibility of making humanity really human.
- Ellen Key, 1916

Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace.
- Luke 19:42

Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.
- Thomas Edison

War stirs in men's hearts the mud of their worst instincts. It puts a premium on violence, nourishes hatred, and gives free rein to cupidity. It crushes the weak, exalts the unworthy, and bolsters tyranny .. .Time and time again it has destroyed all ordered living, devastated hope, and put the prophets to death.
- Charles DeGaulle

America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.
- Abraham Lincoln

In 1989, thirteen nations comprising 1,695,000 people experienced nonviolent revolutions that succeeded beyond anyone's wildest expectations . . . If we add all the countries touched by major nonviolent actions in our century (the Philippines, South Africa . . . the independence movement in India . . .) the figure reaches 3,337,400,000, a staggering 65% of humanity! All this in the teeth of the assertion, endlessly repeated, that nonviolence doesn't work in the 'real' world.
- Walter Wink

If I can't dance I don't want to be part of your revolution.
- Emma Goldman

Mounting an expedition to actualize a Compassionate Commonwealth of all peoples...is the great spiritual challenge of our time.
- Sam Keen

I believe in compulsory cannibalism. If people were forced to eat what they killed there would be no more war.
- Abbie Hoffman

The peace process we all aim for will not necessarily be a result of the mere signing of a treaty or agreement. It must become a matter of our everyday lives, so that peace settles and lasts and becomes supported by everybody. We therefore have to give peace all the required care and preserve it and promote it.
- King Hassan II of Morocco (1929-1999)

What good is a house, if you haven't got a decent planet to put it on?
- Henry David Thoreau

In History, stagnant waters, whether they be the stagnant waters of custom or those of despotism, harbour no life; life is dependent on the ripples created by a few eccentric individuals. In homage to that life & vitality, the community has to brave certain perils and must countenance a measure of heresy. One must live dangerously if one wants to live at all.
- Herbert Read

Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

It is folly to punish your neighbor by fire when you live next door.
- Publius Syrus

Our friends show us what we can do; our enemies teach us what we must do.
- Goethe

If you think you're too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito in the room.
- Anita Koddick

When the rich make war it's the poor that die.
- Jean Paul Sartre

Fear less, hope more,
- Whine less, breathe more,

The first essential characteristics of nonviolent action is that it is creative.
- Hildegarde Goss-Mayr

Peace comes from being able to contribute the best that we have, and all that we are, toward creating a world that supports everyone. But it is also securing the space for others to contibute the best that they have and all that they are.
- Hafsat Abiola

Non-violence is a very powerful weapon. Most people don't understand the power of non-violence and tend to be amazed by the whole idea. Those who have been involved in bringing about change and see the difference between violence and non-violence are firmly committed to a lifetime of non-violence, not because it is easy or because it is cowardly, but because it is an effective and very powerful way.
- Cesar Chavez

There will one day spring from the brain of science a machine or force so fearful in its potentialities, so absolutely terrifying, that even man, the fighter, who will dare torture and death in order to inflict torture and death, will be appalled, and so abandon war forever.
- Thomas Edison

I dream of giving birth to a child who will ask: "Mother, what was war?"
- Eve Merriam

Opinion of a rich woman who has never worked
Ann Romney has never worked a day of her life in the corporate market place, yet she pretends to understand what working single moms go through. Yeah - just like Marie Antoinette. A good op-ed that cuts through the privileged Romney mindset - By Linda Hirshman.

San Onofre rally: Keep it shut down for good!!
Our most important issue in Southern California A rally to demand the permanent shutdown of the aged and failing San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS), which is being plagued with a series of failures, which have resulted in the "temporary" shutdown of both nuclear reactors. April 29th, near the south gate on Basilone Road, just south of the power plant.

SDG&E in league with Enron crooks
"When ENRON schemed to manipulate markets and defraud ratepayers, its executives went to jail. BP faces billions of dollars in fines for causing the Gulf Oil spill. When automobile manufacturers sold cars with dangerous defects that killed people, it was their shareholders who paid the price. - Why, then, should SDG&E and its publicly traded parent company, Sempra Energy, expect local ratepayers to pay for its uninsured liability costs for the wildfires that it caused, while its executives get off scott free?" - By Miriam Rafferty: - East County Magazine

Europe's Economic Suicide
By PAUL KRUGMAN - NY Times - "Consider the state of affairs in Spain, which is now the epicenter of the crisis. Never mind talk of recession; Spain is in full-on depression, with the overall unemployment rate at 23.6 percent, comparable to America at the depths of the Great Depression, and the youth unemployment rate over 50 percent. This canít go on ó and the realization that it canít go on is what is sending Spanish borrowing costs ever higher. -- Rather than admit that theyíve been wrong, European leaders seem determined to drive their economy -- and their society -- off a cliff. And the whole world will pay the price."

Poet Jason Hall provides a window into violence with our neighbors to the South.

Bank of America - a citadel of corruption
By Matt Taibbi - "There are two things every American needs to know about Bank of America. - The first is that it's corrupt. This bank has systematically defrauded almost everyone with whom it has a significant business relationship, cheating investors, insurers, homeowners, shareholders, depositors, and the state. It is a giant, raging hurricane of theft and fraud...The second is that all of us, as taxpayers, are keeping that hurricane raging. "

Malfunctions also found in 2nd San Onofre reactor
LOS ANGELES TIMES: - "Energy officials had said tubes at San Onofre's reactors were experiencing different types of wear. - Southern California Edison officials said that they are now seeing the same unusual type of wear on steam generator tubes at both of the San Onofre nuclear plant's reactor units, which have been shuttered for months. - Officials found excessive wear in recent months on more than 300 tubes that were installed as part of the $671-million replacement of the plant's four steam generators. The new steam generators, manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, were installed within the last two years, which made the rate of deterioration startling."

Americans are dumping their big banks
"Since the big corporate banks crashed the economy in 2008, they've been rewarded with bailouts, tax breaks, and bonuses, while American workers lose jobs and homes. Little wonder that many Americans - and now, institutions and local governments - have been closing their accounts at big corporate banks and transferring their money to community banks and credit unions." [From Common Dreams]

Israel announced its intent to bomb Iran
Israeli TV report shows air force gearing up for Iran attack, says moment of truth is near. Israeli Air Force expects losses, and knows it can't destroy entire Iranian program. Israel increasing it saber rattling and making detailed plans for war with Iran.

Military creation: A fog of drugs and war
LOS ANGELES TIMES - "In a small but growing number of cases across the nation, lawyers are blaming the U.S. military's heavy use of psychotropic drugs for their clients' aberrant behavior and related health problems. Such defenses have rarely gained traction in military or civilian courtrooms, but Burke's case provides the first important indication that military psychiatrists and court-martial judges are not blind to what can happen when troops go to work medicated."

Ann Romney works hard! (at being rich)
"Ann Romney's life as an incredibly wealthy woman means she's never been in a position where she had to work outside of the home and children. She has never known the kind of economic struggles working-class and poor families face. ...there's the couple's six reported homes, including a $5 million ski lodge in Utah and a $12 million oceanfront mansion in La Jolla, Calif., which the couple is currently renovating with plans to quadruple its overall size and to install an elevator in the garage for the couple's cars."

Court stripping away our individual rights
On April 2, the Supreme Court announced it had ruled by a 5-4 vote that any person arrested and held even temporarily can be subjected to a strip search - no matter how minor the charge and without any evidence that they might be carrying weapons or contraband. [But the Democrats, Republicans and yammering talk shows were strangely quiet about this shocking announcement.] - There can't be any mistake about it any longer - the drive to expand governmental powers at the expense of individual liberties and freedoms is supported by Republicans and Democrats alike.

84 year old woman fights to regain right to vote

Watch a video with Ruthelle, the 84 year-old woman, in her challenge to Wisconsin's voter ID law. Ruthelle is the ACLU's 84-year-old plaintiff challenging Wisconsin's voter ID law. She is only one of millions of people who are at risk of losing their right to vote this November as a result of wide-ranging state-by-state efforts to deny people access to the polls.

Mars,Skittlers say goodbye to ALEC
It' OK to eat MARS, Skittles and Snickers. Mars Inc., the company that makes everything from Skittles to M&M's to Uncle Ben's, has joined McDonald's, Wendy's, and a half-dozen other companies in quitting the American Legislative Exchange Council. It has successfully promoted legislation in the states that curbs women's choice, gay rights and promotes gun protection and the "stand your ground" law, such as that in Florida which protects vigilantes, such as George Zimmerman.

OBAMA abandons LGBT executive order
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney engaged in an eight minute back-and-forth with reporters and insisted that Obama had decided against issuing the much sought after Federal Contractor LGBT Anti Discrimination Executive Order - "I find yesterdays move by Obama insulting reprehensible and inexcusable. Especially given the fact that Lyndon Johnson issued the same exact EO for the civil rights of Black Americans in 1965. - And as for ENDA its been languishing in Congress since the early 70′s so good luck with that." (By Igor Volsky of Think Progress)

Late-breaking news: This just in ...

News that did not make our deadline:

Welsh theatre presents play about Bradley Manning
The Welsh National Theater is staging the new production of Tim Prices's, "The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning". The reviews are very positive. You can watch it on livestream. There is a lot of support amongst Veterans for Peace of the UK and other activist in the UK for Bradley Manning. The theatre is based in Bradley's hometown Haverfordwest, Pembrokshire, where Bradley spent four years at high school. The play is being initially staged in Bradley's old high school.

Israeli officer smashes Danish protester in face

Israeli Lt. Col. Shalom Eisner is seen smashing a Danish activist in the face with his assault rifle. The violent act occurred as Palestinian and European activists were riding their bikes in the Jordan Valley. Approximately 20 minutes into their ride, they were stopped by IDF forces. The caravan of international bicyclists began to sing songs and protest in a non-violent manner, after which the soldiers began to attack them. The Israeli nation was shocked by the brutality. The military said Monday that Eisner would be suspended while the incident is investigated. Very SHORT video.

Transgender beauty was disqualified from pagent

Jenna Talackova disqualified from Miss Universe Contest. Quite obviously Talackova is a woman - a very beautiful woman. Viewers agree that she quite obviously was BORN a woman. Vancouver Observer blogger Bianca Pencz blogs that Talackova's profile was visible on the official contestants page of the Donald Trump-owned Miss Universe Canada beauty pageant just a few days ago. The organization on Monday said Talackova was back in "provided she meets the legal gender recognition requirements of Canada, and the standards established by other international competitions."

The naked face of a police state in America

Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis - In this video, now gone viral nationwide, a group of college students are huddled on the ground in a defensive position at UC Davis on November 18. UC police Lt. John Pike, then casually douses them with a chemical agent. Bystanders who were simply watching what was going on are also exposed. - If the police had legal grounds to make arrests, it seems apparent from the video that little or no force was necessary to achieve that goal. The students are obviously not a threat to the officers. It appears that the heavily armored riot police could have simply grabbed them and put them in flexi-cuffs had they chosen to do so. That means that this entire assault appears to be a perfect example of excessive force.

Prophetic words from Chalmers Johnson

San Diego's own sage, author, scholar and prophet,Chalmers Johnson, gave his take on the Military-Industrial Complex, American defense spending and the coming downfall of the Empire years before it happened. Johnson is the author of "Blowback" and "The Sorrows of Empire".

Ted Olson Interview With Fox News Chris Wallace

Wallace, insinuating that Gay Marriage is judicial activism, asks where is it in the Constitution that permits gay mariage. "Where is the right to interracial marriage in the Constitution" asked Ted Olsen of Wallace. Brilliant arguments by Olson. When Wallace insists the voters have the right to outlaw gay marriage, Olson asks if it would be constitutional for the voters to force blacks to drink at separate water fountains.

Manning Video:American troops slaughter civilians

Army intel analyst Bradley Manning faces decades in prison for allegedly leaking this video of a U.S. helicopter attack killing 11 civilians and wounding two children in Baghdad, Iraq. The Army covered up the evidence and declared the war crime "justified". Now they say that exposing the massacre is criminal.

The Government Is Not the Country
MEMORIAL DAY - "One of the bromides we hear every Memorial Day is how countless American soldiers have died for their country. Thatís nothing but sheer nonsense. Many of them died not for their country but rather for their government. Thereís a difference. - Unfortunately, many Americans conflate the government and the country. In their minds, they are one and the same thing. Thus, for them when soldiers die for their government, they also die for their country." By Jacob G. Hornberger

An alternative view of Memorial Day

This Memorial Day we must remember those leaders who lied to us and the dead soldiers, enticing them into war to enrich the Military Industrial Congressional comples. It is time for Christians to slay the golden calf of the military. Christians should stop joining the military. They should stop encouraging their young men to enlist. They should stop being military chaplains and medics. American churches must be demilitarized.
