This 'N That

What a cruel thing is war: to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joys and happiness God has granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors, and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world.
- Robert E. Lee, in a letter to his wife, 1864

Our friends show us what we can do; our enemies teach us what we must do.
- Goethe

Some things you must always be unable to bear. Some things you must never stop refusing to bear. Injustice and outrage and dishonor and shame. No matter how young you are or how old you have got. Not for kudos and not for cash, your picture in the paper nor money in the bank, neither. Just refuse to bear them.
- William Faulkner

If you live alone, whose feet will you wash?
- St. Basil

I am done with great things and big things, great institutions and big success, and I am for those tiny invisible molecular moral forces that work from individual to individual, creeping through the crannies of the world like so many rootlets, or like the capillary oozing of water, yet which if you give them time, will rend the hardest monuments of man's pride.
- William James

Abba Poeman said about Abba Prior that every single day he made a fresh beginning.
- Desert Fathers and Mothers

Life is a whim of several billion cells to be you for a while.
- Unknown

If Columbus had an advisory committee he would probably still be at the dock.
- Justice Arthur Goldberg

The absence of risk is a sure sign of mediocrity.
- Charles de Foucauld

Murder and capital punishment are not opposites that cancel one another, but similars that breed their kind. It is the deed that teaches not the name we give it.
- George Bernard Shaw

It is easier to lead men to combat, stirring up their passion, than to restrain them and direct them toward the patient labors of peace.
- Andre Gide

A peace that comes from fear and not from the heart is the opposite of peace.
- Gersonides

Since we are to be conformed to the image of Christ, how can we then fight our enemies with the sword? ... Spears and swords of iron we leave to those who, alas, consider human blood and swine's blood of well-nigh equal value ...
- Menno Simons, 1539 A.D

To resort to power one need not be violent, and to speak to conscience one need not be meek. The most effective action both resorts to power and engages conscience. Nonviolent actions does not have to get others to be nice. It can in effect force them to consult their consciences. Nor does it have to petition those in power to do something about a situation. It can face the authorities with a new fact and say: Accept this new situation which we have created.
- Barbara Deming

The soldier, above all other people, prays for peace, for he must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war.
- Douglas MacArthur

Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.
- John F. Kennedy

Why not go out on a limb? That's where the fruit is.
- Will Rogers

Angels can fly because they take themselves so lightly.

- Oscar Wilde

Alan John Percivale Taylor

If in our daily life we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. This is the most basic kind of peace work.
- Thich Nhat Hanh

You see things; and you say, "Why?" But I dream things that never were; and I say, "Why not?"
- George Bernard Shaw

Freedom is actually a bigger game than power. Power is about what you can control. Freedom is about what you can unleash.
- Harriet Rubin

If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.
- Longfellow

We should take care, in inculcating patriotism into our boys and girls, that is a patriotism above the narrow sentiment which usually stops at one's country, and thus inspires jealousy and enmity in dealing with others... Our patriotism should be of the wider, nobler kind which recognises justice and reasonableness in the claims of others and which lead our country into comradeship with...the other nations of the world. The first step to this end is to develop peace and goodwill within our borders, by training our youth of both sexes to its practice as their habit of life, so that the jealousies of town against town, class against class and sect against sect no longer exist; and then to extend this good feeling beyond our frontiers towards our neighbours.
- Lord Baden-Powell

The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways: the point is to change it.
- Karl Marx

Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And when you look into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you.

People have power when other people think they have power.

The God of life summons us to life; more, to be lifegivers, especially toward those who lie under the heel of the powers.

Nonviolence is not a garment to be put on and off at will. Its seat is in the heart, and it must be an inseparable part of our being.
- Mahatma Gandhi

Peace is an environment where conflicts are resolved without violence, where people are free, not exploited, living so they can grow to their full potential.
- Gerard Vanderhaar

Plans to protect air and water, wilderness and wildlife are in fact plans to protect man.
- Stewart Udall

The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within reach, is joy. There is radiance and glory in the darkness, could we but see, and to see, we have only to look. I beseech you to look.
- From a letter written by Fra Giovanni, 1513

Very few people chose war. They chose selfishness and the result was war. Each of us, individually and nationally, must choose: total love or total war.
- Dave Dellinger

We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace.
- Gladstone

Compromise does not mean cowardice.
- John F. Kennedy

. . . [T]o live not with hands clenched to grasp, to strike, to hold tight to a life that is always slipping away the more tightly we hold it, but . . . to live with the hands stretched out both to give and receive with gladness.
- (Carl) Frederick Buechner

The good life is one inspired by love and guided by knowledge.

The belief in the possibility of a short decisive war appears to be one of the most ancient and dangerous of human illusions.
- Robert Lynd (1879-1949), Anglo-Irish essayist, journalist

There will one day spring from the brain of science a machine or force so fearful in its potentialities, so absolutely terrifying, that even man, the fighter, who will dare torture and death in order to inflict torture and death, will be appalled, and so abandon war forever.
- Thomas Edison

In April, we cannot see sunflowers in France, so we might say the sunflowers do not exist. But the local farmers have already planted thousands of seeds, and when they look at the bare hills, they may be able to see the sunflowers already. The sunflowers are there. We must have research for peace ... It would embrace the outstanding problems of morality. The time has come for man's intellect, his scientific method, to win over the immoral brutality and irrationality of war and militarism ... Now we are forced to eliminate from the world forever this vestige of prehistoric barbarism, this curse to the human race.
- Linus Pauling

None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.

Time-lapse of gigantic student protest in Montreal

Time-lapse of student protest in Montreal, March 22, 2012. Students demonstrating in Montreal and across the province say higher fees mean higher debt for them and their parents. - Students, some with their faces painted, carried signs and flags, chanted and marched down the city's major arteries, paralyzing the downtown core of the country's second largest city. - There were no reports of violence Thursday.

The naked face of a police state in America

Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis - In this video, now gone viral nationwide, a group of college students are huddled on the ground in a defensive position at UC Davis on November 18. UC police Lt. John Pike, then casually douses them with a chemical agent. Bystanders who were simply watching what was going on are also exposed. - If the police had legal grounds to make arrests, it seems apparent from the video that little or no force was necessary to achieve that goal. The students are obviously not a threat to the officers. It appears that the heavily armored riot police could have simply grabbed them and put them in flexi-cuffs had they chosen to do so. That means that this entire assault appears to be a perfect example of excessive force.

Cringing at the thought of policing another occupation? Clear out those pesky protesters by beating them first and answering lawyers later.

The Government Is Not the Country
Article
MEMORIAL DAY - "One of the bromides we hear every Memorial Day is how countless American soldiers have died for their country. That’s nothing but sheer nonsense. Many of them died not for their country but rather for their government. There’s a difference. - Unfortunately, many Americans conflate the government and the country. In their minds, they are one and the same thing. Thus, for them when soldiers die for their government, they also die for their country." By Jacob G. Hornberger

An alternative view of Memorial Day

This Memorial Day we must remember those leaders who lied to us and the dead soldiers, enticing them into war to enrich the Military Industrial Congressional comples. It is time for Christians to slay the golden calf of the military. Christians should stop joining the military. They should stop encouraging their young men to enlist. They should stop being military chaplains and medics. American churches must be demilitarized.
