Occupy Vista Wants US Out of Afghanistan
This week's topic is "Out of Afghanistan". That means you want to have a sign on this topic, if at all possible. We in Occupy Vista are trying to have a preponderance of signs on one topic each week so that we can better educate the driving public as to our goals. This doesn't mean you can't come without a sign, or that you can't use an old sign on another topic. But it does mean that we could use signs that are on topic. Please. -By Evelyn Treais.

Top Ten Catholic Teachings Santorum Ignores
By Juan Cole: "The right wing Republican politicians who have been denouncing the requirement that female employees have access to birth control as part of their health benefits as an attack on religious freedom completely ignore the church teachings they don't agree with. Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich are both Catholics, and wear their faith on their sleeves, but they are hypocritical in picking and choosing when they wish to listen to the bishops." [It is surprising how un-Catholic Santorum and Gingrich really are!]

Why Bilinguals Are Smarter
NY TIMES - "SPEAKING two languages rather than just one has obvious practical benefits in an increasingly globalized world. But in recent years, scientists have begun to show that the advantages of bilingualism are even more fundamental than being able to converse with a wider range of people. Being bilingual, it turns out, makes you smarter. It can have a profound effect on your brain, improving cognitive skills not related to language and even shielding against dementia in old age. "
Idaho Senate passes pregnancy ultrasound bill
BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho state senate passed a law requiring Idaho women to undergo an ultrasound before having an abortion. The proposal passed the Senate 23-12 Monday after an emotional 90-minute debate.
State Sen. Diane Bilyeu, D-Pocatello, said, "You know, fellow senators, as a woman, and as a person of faith, this bill makes me want to cry. I want an end to abortion as well as all of you do, and I am totally opposed to abortion except in the case of rape, incest or the life of the mother. But I find this bill to be intrusive into my faith and it is punitive as a woman."
Justice Dept. Blocks Texas Photo ID Voting Law
NY Times - The Justice Department's civil rights division on Monday blocked Texas from enforcing a new law requiring voters to present photo identification at the polls, contending that the law would disproportionately suppress turnout among eligible Hispanic voters. -- Benjamin Todd Jealous, the president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, praised the decision, saying the state law "would have blocked hundreds of thousands of Hispanic voters from the polls just because they lack a state-issued photo ID."

They grieved. - Michelle Caddell, 48, who knew Sergeant Bales when he was growing up, watched a video clip of the news over and over and over again, mesmerized by disbelief. 'I wanted to see, maybe, a different face,' she said, fighting back tears. 'Because that's not our Bobby.

The naked face of a police state in America
Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis - In this video, now gone viral nationwide, a group of college students are huddled on the ground in a defensive position at UC Davis on November 18. UC police Lt. John Pike, then casually douses them with a chemical agent. Bystanders who were simply watching what was going on are also exposed. - If the police had legal grounds to make arrests, it seems apparent from the video that little or no force was necessary to achieve that goal. The students are obviously not a threat to the officers. It appears that the heavily armored riot police could have simply grabbed them and put them in flexi-cuffs had they chosen to do so. That means that this entire assault appears to be a perfect example of excessive force.
Ted Olson Interview With Fox News Chris Wallace
Wallace, insinuating that Gay Marriage is judicial activism, asks where is it in the Constitution that permits gay mariage. "Where is the right to interracial marriage in the Constitution" asked Ted Olsen of Wallace. Brilliant arguments by Olson. When Wallace insists the voters have the right to outlaw gay marriage, Olson asks if it would be constitutional for the voters to force blacks to drink at separate water fountains.
