US Congress expands authoritarian anti-protest law
A bill passed Monday in the US House of Representatives and Thursday in the Senate would expand existing anti-protest laws that make it a felony—a serious criminal offense punishable by a lengthy prison term—to "enter or remain in" an area designated as "restricted." -- Striking government workers who form a picket line near any event of "national significance" can be locked up under Section 1752(a)(3) (making it a crime to "imped[e] ingress or egress to or from any restricted building or grounds"). If signed by Pres. Obama, the law would be a Draconian crack down on OCCUPY and First Amendment rights. Read More

This 'N That

I do not believe in using women in combat, because females are too fierce.
- Margaret Mead

Why does man have reason if he can only be influenced by violence?
- Leo Tolstoy

War stirs in men's hearts the mud of their worst instincts. It puts a premium on violence, nourishes hatred, and gives free rein to cupidity. It crushes the weak, exalts the unworthy, and bolsters tyranny .. .Time and time again it has destroyed all ordered living, devastated hope, and put the prophets to death.
- Charles DeGaulle

A free society is one where it is safe to be unpopular.
- Adlai Stevenson

Dare to be naive.
- Buckminster Fuller

I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess.
- Oscar Wilde

World peace is us....We are each walking agents of the vision of peace we carry inside us.
- Kathleen Vande Kieft

Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.
- George Orwell

I swore never to be silent whenever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.
- Elie Weisel

For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.
- Pythagoras

Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is--whether its victim is human or animal--we cannot expect things to be much better in this world... We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight in killing we set back the progress of humanity.
- Rachel Carson

It is the job of thinking people, not to be on the side of the executioners.
- Albert Camus

Do your work as though you had a thousand years to live, & as if you were to die tomorrow.
- Mother Anna Lee, founder of the Shakers

Peace demands the most heroic labor and the most difficult sacrifice. It demands greater heroism than war. It demands greater fidelity to the truth and a much more perfect purity of conscience. The Christian fight for peace is not to be confused with defeatism.
- Thomas Merton

I stand at the altar of murdered men, and, while I live, I fight their cause.
- Florence Nightingale, 1856

Thaw with her gentle persuasion is more powerful than Thor with his hammer. The one melts, the other breaks into pieces.
- Henry David Thoreau

One day we shall win freedom, but not only for ourselves. We shall so appeal to your heart and conscience that we shall win you in the process, and our victory will be a double victory.
- Martin Luther King

Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed and in such desperate enterprises? If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.
- Henry David Thoreau

In all the ways you can,
- In all the places you can,

We must have research for peace ... It would embrace the outstanding problems of morality. The time has come for man's intellect, his scientific method, to win over the immoral brutality and irrationality of war and militarism ... Now we are forced to eliminate from the world forever this vestige of prehistoric barbarism, this curse to the human race.
- Linus Pauling

Chaos is a name for any order that produces confusion in our minds.
- George Santayana

Mounting an expedition to actualize a Compassionate Commonwealth of all peoples...is the great spiritual challenge of our time.
- Sam Keen

Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And when you look into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you.
- Friedrich Nietzche

The master's tools will never destroy the master's house.
- Audre Lorde, Sister Outsider

Peace is a gift,
- It is a gift we give to ourselves,

Peace is that state in which fear of any kind is unknown.
- John Buchan

I'd like someone to mention the day that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to give his life serving others. I'd like somebody to say that day, that Martin Luther King tried to love somebody. I want you to say that day, that I tried to be right on the war question. I want you to be able to say that day, that I did try to feed the hungry . . . I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity. Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice; say that I was a drum major for peace; I was a drum major for righteousness . . . I want to leave a committed life behind.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

It is penance to work, to give oneself to others, to endure the pinpricks of community living.
- Dorothy Day

The longer we listen to one another - with real attention - the more commonality we will find in all our lives. That is, if we are careful to exchange with one another life stories and not simply opinions.
- Barbara Deming

We cannot have peace if we are only concerned with peace. War is not an accident. It is the logical outcome of a certain way of life. If we want to attack war, we have to attack that way of life.
- A. J. Muste

Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals) is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission--to be of service to them whenever they require it... If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.
- St. Francis of Assisi

The love of one's country is a splendid thing. But why should love stop at the border?
- Pablo Casals

Activism pays the rent on being alive and being here on the planet.
- Alice Walker

. . . [T]o live not with hands clenched to grasp, to strike, to hold tight to a life that is always slipping away the more tightly we hold it, but . . . to live with the hands stretched out both to give and receive with gladness.
- (Carl) Frederick Buechner

There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root."
- Henry David Thoreau, Walden

The world cannot continue to wage war like physical giants and to seek peace like intellectual pygmies
- Basil O'Connor

Abba Poeman said about Abba Prior that every single day he made a fresh beginning.
- Desert Fathers and Mothers

I plan to stand by nonviolence, because I have found it to be a philosophy of life that regulates not only my dealings in the struggle for racial justice, but also my dealings with people, and with my own self.
- Martin Luther King Jr.

When the rich make war, it's the poor that die.
- Jean-Paul Sartre

We need, in every community, a group of angelic troublemakers.
- Bayard Rustin

Articles & News:

My little missive to Rick Santorum
OP-ED in SF Chronicle - "You know the Big Government that all you guys rail against, the one that is sapping our precious freedoms? Well, that ain't nothing compared with Big Religion. So as a conservative, Senator, you would substitute one form of tyranny for another? Am I getting that right? -- Morality is not the same as religion. As we have seen in recent scandals, there are plenty of pious but immoral people. So when you say you want more religion in American life, you're not talking about morality."

War on Women Rages
By Kit-Bacon Gressitt of Fallbrook - Rick Santorum, Darrell Issa, Mitt Romney and Roy Blunt: "What these fellows do not comprehend is that Limbaugh, using a classic War on Women tactic, acted on his disagreement with Fluke's opinion by attacking her sexuality — if you can't beat them or screw them, call them 'Slut'! -- and not one of them called Limbaugh on that, no one on the GOP side of the aisle did, no one but Fluke herself.-- President Obama did phone Fluke to commiserate and ask how she was doing -- he can be so endearing when he's not being so moderate."

OP-ED: "Good Morals vs. Bad Morals"
By Dave Patterson of Ramona, who grew up a Catholic, shares his personal observations on the deep hypocrisy of the church and American fundamentalist politics regarding birth control and women's rights, and how this affected poverty and freedom.

Occupy WS calls for May Day general strike
Occupy Wall Street has officially endorsed the call for a general strike on May Day (May 1). Los Angeles and Oakland had already endorsed the strike. "*No Work *No School *No Housework *No Shopping *No Banking TAKE THE STREETS!"

AUDIT -84% of foreclosures fraudulent, unlawful
NY Times - An audit by San Francisco county officials of about 400 recent foreclosures there determined that almost all involved either legal violations or suspicious documentation, according to a report released Wednesday. ...the detailed and comprehensive nature of the San Francisco findings suggest how pervasive foreclosure irregularities may be across the nation. For example, transfers of many loans in the foreclosure files were made by entities that had no right to assign them and institutions took back properties in auctions even though they had not proved ownership."

Big increase in support for gay marriage in CA
LA TIMES: - "A new Field Poll found that 59% of respondents favored gay marriage while 34% opposed it. Three years ago, the poll found that 52.3% favored same-sex unions while 47.7% opposed them. The findings in this survey demonstrate that California voters over time have become more permissive on this issue," the Field Poll said in a statement."

Manning's bravery helped end the Iraq War

The patriotic courage of Pvt Bradley Manning as a whistle-blower helped expose corruption, war crimes and devious war strategies, and bring the Iraq War to a close. His legal and constitutional case is laid out by attorney professor Marjorie Cohn at the rally for Manning in Freedom Square, San Diego on Dec. 14th, Manning's birthday and 2nd Christmas in prison without a trial. Cohn, past president of the National Lawyers Guild, stated "If Bradley Manning had committed war crimes, not exposed them, he would be a free man today."

Justice subverted by neffarious secrecy in U.S.

Democracy Now - democracynow.org — The whistleblowing website WikiLeaks has published an internal email from the private intelligence firm Stratfor that suggests the U.S. Justice Department has obtained a sealed indictment against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The email is one of around five million obtained from Stratfor's servers by the hacker group, Anonymous. "Somehow you have a private intelligence company, Stratfor, 'shadow CIA' as people have called it, having information about this sealed indictment, secret again, that Julian Assange does not have, that Wikileaks does not have, that his lawyers do not have," says Michael Ratner of the Center for Constitutional Rights, who is a legal advisor to both Assange and to WikiLeaks. "What you see is secrecy, secrecy, secrecy." Leaked Stratfor Email Suggests Secret U.S. Indictment of WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange.

U.S. Law May Allow Killings citizens, Holder Says
NYT - Charlie Savage - " Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. asserted on Monday that it is lawful for the government to kill American citizens if officials deem them to be operational leaders of Al Qaeda who are planning attacks on the United States and if capturing them alive is not feasible."

Wikileaks Stratfor Emails Devastating

"Some 5 million internal emails from Stratfor, an Austin, Texas-based company that brands itself as a "global intelligence" provider, were recently obtained by Anonymous, the hacker collective, and are being released in batches by WikiLeaks, the whistleblowing website, starting Monday. The most striking revelation from the latest disclosure is not simply the military-industrial complex that conspires to spy on citizens, activists and trouble-causers, but the extremely low quality of the information available to the highest bidder...".* Ana Kasparian and Cenk Uygur discuss on The Young Turks.[NOTE: Wikileaks give this kind of information away for free. Stratfor charges corporations big bucks to steal the information for them.]

Like to see Bilbray defeated?
Even though Rep. Brian Bilbray's district no longer includes Escondido, we all have years of motivation to see him turned out of office. Lori Saldaña, who spoke to EDC early in 2011, is running against him.

Issa excludes women from hearings on contraception

"WHERE ARE THE WOMEN?" demands NY congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, outraged when she sees all men in the first panel of 'experts' asked by Issa to testify on the hearing on inclusion of women in health care coverage for contraception. Female Democrats on Thursday walked out of a House GOP committee hearing on contraceptive coverage after the only female witness requested to speak during the first of two hearings was rejected by the committee chairman, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA). Reports from inside the hearing noted that some of the female Democrats left the room, and one member, Rep. Holmes Norton (D-DC), called the committee an "autocratic regime."

Late-breaking news: This just in ...

News that did not make our deadline:

Manning Video:American troops slaughter civilians

Army intel analyst Bradley Manning faces decades in prison for allegedly leaking this video of a U.S. helicopter attack killing 11 civilians and wounding two children in Baghdad, Iraq. The Army covered up the evidence and declared the war crime "justified". Now they say that exposing the massacre is criminal.

GOP Wash. legislator win the case for gay marriage

Washington State Rep. Maureen Walsh (a Republican) gave a passionate speech defending marriage equality that's going viral. ""You know, I was married for 23 years to the love of my life and he died six years ago," Rep. Maureen Walsh says in the clip. "I think of all the wonderful years we had and the wonderful fringe benefits of having three beautiful children...and so I just think to myself: how could I deny anyone the right to have that incredible bond with another individual in life. To me it seems almost cruel." Walsh, who tells the crowd she has a lesbian daughter, goes on to note: "Shes's still a fabulous human being and she met someone she loves very much. And some day, by God, I want to throw a wedding for that kid. And someday I hope that's what I can do. I hope she will not feel like a second-class citizen involved in something called a 'domestic partnership' which, frankly, sounds like a Mary Maids franchise to me."

FDR tells the truth about the leaders of the modern Republican party. Somehow, in 1936, he foresaw what would be happening NOW.

The naked face of a police state in America

Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis - In this video, now gone viral nationwide, a group of college students are huddled on the ground in a defensive position at UC Davis on November 18. UC police Lt. John Pike, then casually douses them with a chemical agent. Bystanders who were simply watching what was going on are also exposed. - If the police had legal grounds to make arrests, it seems apparent from the video that little or no force was necessary to achieve that goal. The students are obviously not a threat to the officers. It appears that the heavily armored riot police could have simply grabbed them and put them in flexi-cuffs had they chosen to do so. That means that this entire assault appears to be a perfect example of excessive force.

Ted Olson Interview With Fox News Chris Wallace

Wallace, insinuating that Gay Marriage is judicial activism, asks where is it in the Constitution that permits gay mariage. "Where is the right to interracial marriage in the Constitution" asked Ted Olsen of Wallace. Brilliant arguments by Olson. When Wallace insists the voters have the right to outlaw gay marriage, Olson asks if it would be constitutional for the voters to force blacks to drink at separate water fountains.

Prophetic words from Chalmers Johnson

San Diego's own sage, author, scholar and prophet,Chalmers Johnson, gave his take on the Military-Industrial Complex, American defense spending and the coming downfall of the Empire years before it happened. Johnson is the author of "Blowback" and "The Sorrows of Empire".
