This 'N ThatIf you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea. - Antoine de Saint-ExuperyThaw with her gentle persuasion is more powerful than Thor with his hammer. The one melts, the other breaks into pieces. - Henry David Thoreau If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. Wherever you are, if you are following your bliss, you are enjoying that refreshment, that life within you, all the time. - Joseph Campbell We cannot have peace if we are only concerned with peace. War is not an accident. It is the logical outcome of a certain way of life. If we want to attack war, we have to attack that way of life. - A. J. Muste I'd like someone to mention the day that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to give his life serving others. I'd like somebody to say that day, that Martin Luther King tried to love somebody. I want you to say that day, that I tried to be right on the war question. I want you to be able to say that day, that I did try to feed the hungry . . . I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity. Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice; say that I was a drum major for peace; I was a drum major for righteousness . . . I want to leave a committed life behind. - Martin Luther King, Jr. If we emphasize the life and works of our greatest contributors . . . people will come to realize that moral courage is bravery of the highest type, and America will be called the "Champion of Peace." - Senator Spark Matsunaga Plans to protect air and water, wilderness and wildlife are in fact plans to protect man. - Stewart Udall Women prevent the threads of life from being broken. The finest minds have always understood the peacemaking role of women. - Mikhail Gorbachev We can’t become nonviolent on the basis of intellectual conviction. Commitment to nonviolence demands a very profound conversion of mind and heart. If we take the time to pray with Jesus, we too will be converted in mind and heart. It won’t work if we try to reason it out. The only way is through a change of heart, a coming into a way of being that is the way of Jesus. - Bishop Thomas Gumbleton There is a certain kind of peace that is not merely the absence of war. It is larger than that. The peace I am thinking of is not at the mercy of history's rule, nor is it a passive surrender to the status quo. The peace I am thinking of is the dance of an open mind when it engages another equally open one -- an activity that occurs most naturally, most often in the reading/writing world we live in. Accessible as it is, this particular kind of peace warrants vigilance. - Toni Morrison, The Dancing Mind (1996) Dust turned to hope. - Elie Weisel They make a desert and call it peace. - Tactitus Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. - John F. Kennedy Chaos is a name for any order that produces confusion in our minds. - George Santayana Immorality: the morality of those who are having a better time. - H.L. Mencken We are going to have to find ways of organizing ourselves cooperatively, sanely, scientifically, harmonically and in regenerative spontaneity with the rest of humanity around the earth.... We are not going to be able to operate our spaceship earth successfully nor for much longer unless we see it as a whole spaceship and our fate as common. - Buckminster Fuller War is as outmoded as cannibalism, chattel slavery, blood-feuds, and dueling, an insult to God and humanity...a daily crucifixion of Christ. - Muriel Lester Each person has inside a basic decency and goodness. If he listens to it and acts on it, he is giving a great deal of what it is the world needs most. It is not complicated but it takes courage. It takes courage for a person to listen to his own goodness and act on it. - Pablo Casals The God of life summons us to life; more, to be lifegivers, especially toward those who lie under the heel of the powers. - Daniel Berrigan War is, at first, the hope that one will be better off; next, the expectation that the other fellow will be worse off; then, the satisfaction that he isn't any better off; and, finally, the surprise at everyone's being worse off. - Karl Kraus (1874-1936) Don't ever let them pull you down so low as to hate them. (also cited as: I will permit no man to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him.) - Booker T. Washington The evils of government are directly proportional to the tolerance of the people. - Frank Kent Talk less, say more, - Hate less, love more, You see things; and you say, "Why?" But I dream things that never were; and I say, "Why not?" - George Bernard Shaw Why does man have reason if he can only be influenced by violence? - Leo Tolstoy Jaw-jaw is better than war-war. - Harold MacMillan Let all bear in mind that a society is judged not so much by the standards attained by its more affluent and privileged members as by the quality of life which it is able to assure for its weakest members. - H.E. Parade Dominated by Law Enforcement and Military News By Frank Gormlie, editor of the Ocean Beach Rag: "I can say this without hesitation: the Martin Luther King Day Parade is dominated by law enforcement and the military. There were more of these groups than civic organizations, churches or sororities. -- The San Diego Police Department, the Border Patrol, the Harbor Patrol, ICE, Homeland Security, the San Diego Sheriffs, the ROTC marchers, and even the FBI marched in this parade that honors a man of peace and justice. I mean the FBI persecuted Martin Luther King to the hilt – its leader, J. Edgar Hoover believed King was the most dangerous man in America. The Border Patrol, ICE, and Homeland Security all routinely violate peoples' rights."

Obama's vast drone killing operation Article By Glenn Greenwald - A Washington Post article describes the complete secrecy behind which this is all being carried out and notes: "no president has ever relied so extensively on the secret killing of individuals to advance the nation's security goals." Here is the first beautifully revealing passage:
OBAMA signed it on the Dotted Line Article Indefinite Detention - "America changed as the new year stumbled across the threshold, but the big shift didn't get much press, which is easy to understand. Can there be a deader news day than a New Year's Eve that falls on a weekend? Besides, alive or dead, habeas corpus has never been a topic to set news editors on fire. - The change came with the whisper of Barack Obama's pen, as he signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act, the annual ratification of military Keynesianism — $662 billion this time — which has been our national policy since World War II bailed out the New Deal." By Alexander Cockburn
European Austerity – Is this 1931 All Over Again? Article A young German economist sees strong parallels between the imposition of austerity and unrealistic economic policies used in Germany back in the 1930's, and the same policies being used in today's Europe, especially in Greece, Spain and Italy. Fabian Linder warns the same explosive popular reaction could result today, imperiling modern social and economic structure. Provocative arguments. The people can be pushed only so far and revolution will explode.

France presses for Robin Hood tax on speculators Article President Sarkozy and French leaders are pushing ahead for the new Financial Transaction Tax (FTT), a very tiny tax on each stock trade. After all, normal sales transactions taxes paid by ordinary people is many times higher. "The financial transaction tax won't harm normal people or the economy because the percentage is so low ... It might drive high-frequency speculative trading out of Europe, but actually we don't need this market because its harmful in the long run as we’ve seen." [The French practice more "égalité" than Wall Street.]
King, 'Why I Am Opposed to the War in Vietnam' Article YouTube = CHANGE = Martin Luther King's most controversial speech, which won him the enmity of the FBI, CIA and the military industrial complex. April 30, 1967.
Back then Life magazine called it "demagogic slander that sounded like a script for Radio Hanoi." The Washington Post patronized that "King has diminished his usefulness to his cause, his country, his people."
If Martin Luther King were alive today, O'Reilly would call him a "co-conspirator with Julian Assange". Beck would call him a "social justice junkie" and a "socialist" with "anti-American" views. Hannity would accuse him of having "sympathy for the enemy" and Limbaugh would say "this man is a racist who is using the acts of a few to condemn the entire white race". We celebrate his birthday Monday, Jan. 17. SD police use SLAPP tactic to suppress free speech News One of the most dangerous tactics used to suppress First Amendment Free Speech is being employed by the San Diego police against OCCUPIERS. Using harsh force to arrest speakers without legal cause, the police never file charges and never show up in court. The intent is to encumber Occupiers with legal expense, fear and great inconvenience. Read MORE about the "SLAPP" tactic:
4 Occupy Protesters charged with Felony Conspiracy News Voice of San Diego -"San Diego police arrested four Occupy protesters on felony charges after they interrupted Mayor Jerry Sanders' final State of the City address Wednesday night. Disturbing a public assembly — such as a City Council meeting or Sanders' annual speech — normally spurs only a misdemeanor charge. But in this case, police added a felony charge of conspiracy to commit a crime for each person." -- Under the felony, they face up to two years in prison for interrupting the mayor's speech. FREE speech in America?
EDITORIAL - Stop the School-to-Prison Pipeline Article "The growth of the school-to-prison pipeline is part of a larger crisis. Since 1970, the U.S. prison population has exploded from about 325,000 people to more than 2 million today. According to Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Color Blindness, this is a phenomenon that cannot be explained by crime rates or drug use. According to Human Rights Watch (Punishment and Prejudice: Racial Disparities in the War on Drugs, 2000) although whites are more likely to violate drug laws than people of color, in some states black men have been admitted to prison on drug charges at rates 20 to 50 times greater than those of white men."
MT Supreme Court - corporations are not people
Last week the Montana State Supreme Court ruled that corporations are not people. President Obama Richly Deserves to Be Dumped Article As evidence of a failed Obama presidency accumulates, criticism of his administration is mounting from liberal Democrats who have too much moral authority to be ignored. -- Most prominent among these critics is veteran journalist Bill Moyers, whose October address to a Public Citizen gathering puts the lie to our barely Democratic president's populist pantomime, acted out last week in a Kansas speech decrying the plight of “innocent, hardworking Americans."

Wallace, insinuating that Gay Marriage is judicial activism, asks where is it in the Constitution that permits gay mariage. "Where is the right to interracial marriage in the Constitution" asked Ted Olsen of Wallace. Brilliant arguments by Olson. When Wallace insists the voters have the right to outlaw gay marriage, Olson asks if it would be constitutional for the voters to force blacks to drink at separate water fountains.
