Sunday, 12/04/2011 Obviously the police violence against OCCUPY groups is being coordinated nationwide, probably by the DHS, in a fashion that is unprecedented and suggests a dangerous police state is coalescing. But we can beg for an increase of love in our hearts that will vitalize and transform all our individual actions, and know that God will take them and multiply them, as Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes. - Dorothy Day, 1963 No one has a right to sit down and feel hopeless. There is too much work to do. - Dorothy Day Let all bear in mind that a society is judged not so much by the standards attained by its more affluent and privileged members as by the quality of life which it is able to assure for its weakest members. - H.E. I have not the shadow of doubt that any man or woman can achieve what I have, if he or she would make the same effort and cultivate the same hope and faith. - Mohandas Gandhi The pens which write against disarmament are made with the same steel from which guns are made. - Aristide Briand, French statesman, Nobel Peace Prize, 1926 The idea of absolute freedom is fiction. It's based on the idea of an independent self. But, in fact, there's no such thing. There's no self without other people. There's no self without sunlight. There's no self without dew. And water. And bees to pollinate the food we eat....So the idea of behaving in a way that doesn't acknowledge those reciprocal relationships is not really freedom, it's indulgence. - Peter Coyote What is the revolution that we need? We need to dissolve the lie that some people have a right to think of other people as their property. And we need at last to form a circle that includes us all, in which all of us are seen as equal... We do not belong to the other, but our lives are linked; we belong in a circle of others. - Barbara Deming When the rich make war it's the poor that die. - Jean Paul Sartre If we work in marble, it will perish; if we work upon brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds and instill into them just principles, we are then engraving upon tablets which no time will efface, but will brighten and brighten to all eternity. - Daniel Webster War is an invention of the human mind. The human mind can invent peace with justice. - Norman Cousins Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is--whether its victim is human or animal--we cannot expect things to be much better in this world... We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight in killing we set back the progress of humanity. - Rachel Carson In History, stagnant waters, whether they be the stagnant waters of custom or those of despotism, harbour no life; life is dependent on the ripples created by a few eccentric individuals. Who better than women should know that battles can be won without resort to physical strength? Who better than we should know all the power that resides in noncooperation? - Barbara Deming You know, if people are not pacifists, it's not their fault. It's because society puts them in that spot. You don't just change a man - you've got to change his environment as you do it. - Cesar Chavez The more we sweat in peace the less we bleed in war. - Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves. - Abraham Lincoln Non-violence is a very powerful weapon. Most people don't understand the power of non-violence and tend to be amazed by the whole idea. Those who have been involved in bringing about change and see the difference between violence and non-violence are firmly committed to a lifetime of non-violence, not because it is easy or because it is cowardly, but because it is an effective and very powerful way. - Cesar Chavez Such as it is, the press has become the greatest power within the Western World, more powerful than the legislature, the executive and judiciary. There is radiance and glory in the darkness, could we but see, and to see, we have only to look. I beseech you to look. - From a letter written by Fra Giovanni, 1513 The pacifist's task today is to find a method of helping and healing which provides a revolutionary constructive substitute for war. - Vera Brittain, 1964 Productive work, love and thought are possible only if a person can be, when necessary, quiet and alone. To be able to listen to oneself is the necessary condition for relating oneself to others. - Erich Fromm It is in the shelter of each other that the people live. - Irish Proverb I really see no other solution than to turn inwards and to root out all the rottenness there. I no longer believe that we can change anything in the world until we first change ourselves. And that seems to me the only lesson to be learned from this war. - Etty Hillesum (concentration camp victim) When the rich make war, it's the poor that die. - Jean-Paul Sartre I dream of giving birth to a child who will ask: "Mother, what was war?" - Eve Merriam To fight and conquer in all our battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting. - Sun Tzu It is easier to lead men to combat, stirring up their passion, than to restrain them and direct them toward the patient labors of peace. - Andre Gide Peace is an environment where conflicts are resolved without violence, where people are free, not exploited, living so they can grow to their full potential. - Gerard Vanderhaar The ultimate measure of a person is not where one stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where one stands in times of challenge and controversy. - Martin Luther King There have been periods of history in which episodes of terrible violence occurred but for which the word violence was never used...Violence is shrouded in justifying myths that lend it moral legitimacy, and these myths for the most part kept people from recognizing the violence for what it was. The people who burned witches at the stake never for one moment thought of their act as violence; rather they though of it as an act of divinely mandated righteousness. The same can be said of most of the violence we humans have ever committed. - Gil Bailie In the twilight of life, God will not judge us on our earthly possessions and human success, but rather on how much we have loved. - St. John of the Cross |
Articles & News: Taking to the streets for the environment worked News From THE NEW YORKER - A brilliant strategy by titan environmentalists held Obama's feet to a very hot fire. Bill Mckibben and James Hansen (the head of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, and one of the country's foremost climate scientists), dogged Obama on his campaign trail. They and an army of environmentalists followed Obama every step of the way carrying signs that quoted him saying that we can "be the generation that finally frees America from the tyranny of oil." -- Knowing that Obama wanted their support in 2012, they attracted his attention by playing hard to get. Obama felt the heat.

OWS rejects take over efforts of DNC, White House Article Glenn Greenwald: - "Having SEIU officials — fresh off endorsing the Obama re-election campaign — shape, fund, dictate and decree an anti-GOP, pro-Obama march is about as antithetical as one can imagine to what the Occupy movement has been. And pretending that the ongoing protests are grounded in the belief that the GOP is the party of the rich while the Democrats are the party of the working class is likely to fool just about nobody other than those fooled by that already. The strength and genius of OWS has been its steadfast refusal to (a) fall into the trap that ensnared the Tea Party of being exploited as a partisan tool and (b) integrate itself into the very political institutions which it’s scorning and protesting."
Wisconsin Recall Drive Surpasses 300,000 Signature News by John Nichols - The petition drive to recall and remove Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker has surpassed all expectations in its first two weeks, collecting more than 300,000 signatures. - The truly remarkably thing about the total so far is not, however, that it is so large. What is truly remarkable is where the signatures are coming from: rural and small-town Wisconsin communities are contributing disproportionally high numbers of signatures to the total. No one, not even the most concerned critic of Governor Walker's assault on collective bargaining rights, expected the recall campaign would move as quickly as it has.

Scott Olsen: 1st interview after hospital release

The naked face of a police state in America
Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis - In this video, now gone viral nationwide, a group of college students are huddled on the ground in a defensive position at UC Davis on November 18. UC police Lt. John Pike, then casually douses them with a chemical agent. Bystanders who were simply watching what was going on are also exposed. - If the police had legal grounds to make arrests, it seems apparent from the video that little or no force was necessary to achieve that goal. The students are obviously not a threat to the officers. It appears that the heavily armored riot police could have simply grabbed them and put them in flexi-cuffs had they chosen to do so. That means that this entire assault appears to be a perfect example of excessive force. WmJmmnMkuEM Pearl Harbor attack 70 years ago - Dec. 11, 1941 Article Pearl Harbor was attacked 70 years ago,on Dec. 7, 1941. Here is a little bit of history very few Americans know. After viewing the wreckage, Admiral Nimitz gave his immediate assessment: "The Japanese made three of the biggest mistakes an attack force could ever make, or God was taking care of America. Which do you think it was?"
B of A cooks up another scheme to rob the poor News Bank of America may have dropped temporarily its debit card fees on its general customers, but it has devised a way to stick millions of poor people with charges for using state issued unemployment debit cards. These cards are issued to the unemployed by states, and administered by Bank of America under contract. Bank of America is making $ millions, and the unemployed are losing those $ millions.
Occupy Inspires Rise in US Campus Activism News Violent confrontations between police and protesters at two University of California campuses have drawn a new cadre of students into the Occupy Wall Street movement and unleashed what some historians call the biggest surge in campus activism since the 1960s. - ""This is the first time in the 11 years I've been here that students have said - 'Wait a minute, I need to wake up to where I am and what's going on,'" said UC Davis art professor Robin Hill. Police attack OCCUPY after Thanksgiving dinner
Police attack Occupy Oakland residents after Thanksgiving dinner. Porta-potties were delivered, but police prevented them from being unloaded. While attempting to get the porta-potties unloaded, a police officer attacked one resident dragging him to ground and arresting him. Later in the video, you can see a cop drawing his taser, and a resident preventing him from discharging his weapon. This is another example of cops creating civil unrest at peaceful gatherings in Oakland by showing force for ridiculous reasons, such as guarding porta-potties, camping, and exercising freedom of speech and assembly.
Oakland police brutally beat another war vet.
An Iraq/Afghan Army Ranger Vet, Kayvan Sabehgi, was walking away from an Occupy Oakland gathering, when confronted by a line of Oakland Police. After asking the officers why they were lining up, Kayvan was assaulted and suffered a lacerated spleen due to a brutal baton beating by the OPD. Kayvan was then arrested and held in a cell for 18 hours with no medical attention, despite his repeated requests for help. - "They lined up in front of me. I was talking to one of them, saying, 'Why are you doing this?' When one moved forward and hit me in the arms, legs and back with his baton. Then three or four cops tackled me and arrested me." - Kayvan Sabehgi, Source: The Guardian 11/4/11 - Kayvan went to an Oakland area hospital and remains in intensive care, after his release from jail.

Actually, we are the 99.9 % Article By Paul Krugman - "We are the 99 percent" is a great slogan. It correctly defines the issue as being the middle class versus the elite (as opposed to the middle class versus the poor). - If anything, however, the 99 percent slogan aims too low. A large fraction of the top 1 percent’s gains have actually gone to an even smaller group, the top 0.1 percent — the richest one-thousandth of the population.

Witty dialogue, profound explanation of today's economic conundrum, a spiral that could collapse the world economy. Ted Olson Interview With Fox News Chris Wallace
Wallace, insinuating that Gay Marriage is judicial activism, asks where is it in the Constitution that permits gay mariage. "Where is the right to interracial marriage in the Constitution" asked Ted Olsen of Wallace. Brilliant arguments by Olson. When Wallace insists the voters have the right to outlaw gay marriage, Olson asks if it would be constitutional for the voters to force blacks to drink at separate water fountains. King, 'Why I Am Opposed to the War in Vietnam' Article YouTube = CHANGE = Martin Luther King's most controversial speech, which won him the enmity of the FBI, CIA and the military industrial complex. April 30, 1967.
Back then Life magazine called it "demagogic slander that sounded like a script for Radio Hanoi." The Washington Post patronized that "King has diminished his usefulness to his cause, his country, his people."
If Martin Luther King were alive today, O'Reilly would call him a "co-conspirator with Julian Assange". Beck would call him a "social justice junkie" and a "socialist" with "anti-American" views. Hannity would accuse him of having "sympathy for the enemy" and Limbaugh would say "this man is a racist who is using the acts of a few to condemn the entire white race". We celebrate his birthday Monday, Jan. 17. |
