You Can't Evict an Idea Whose Time has Come
From New York City - "We are not deterred. Our spirits our high, our resolve indomitable. - This burgeoning movement is more than a protest, more than an occupation, and more than any tactic. The "us" in this movement is far broader than those who are able to participate in physical occupations. The movement is everyone who sends supplies, everyone who talks to their friends and families about the underlying issues, everyone who takes some form of action to get involved in this civic process. This moment is nothing short of America rediscovering the strength we hold when we come together as citizens to take action to address crises that impact us all. -- Such a movement cannot be evicted. Some politicians may physically remove us from public spaces – our spaces – and, physically, they may succeed. But we are engaged in a battle over ideas." Read More

This 'N That

War does not determine who is right - only who is left
- Bertrand Russell

Aggressive conduct, if allowed to go unchecked and unchallenged, ultimately leads to war.
- John F. Kennedy

The pacifist's task today is to find a method of helping and healing which provides a revolutionary constructive substitute for war.
- Vera Brittain, 1964

Peace is not an absence of war, it is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, justice.
- Baruch Spinoza

Peace is that state in which fear of any kind is unknown.
- John Buchan

There is no such thing as defeat in non-violence.
- Cesar Chavez

You can no more win a war than win an earthquake.
- Jeanette Rankin

It's a bit embarrassing to have been concerned with the human problem all one's life and find at the end that one has no more to offer by way of advice than "try to be a little better."
- Aldous Huxley

Smiling is very important. If we are not able to smile, then the world will not have peace. It is not by going out for a demonstration against nuclear missiles that we can bring about peace. It is with our capacity of smiling, breathing, and being peace that we can make peace.
- Thich Nhat Hanh

It is folly to punish your neighbor by fire when you live next door.
- Publius Syrus

Much violence is based on the illusion that life is a property to be defended and not to be shared.
- Henri Nouwen

Poetry is an act of peace. Peace goes into the making of a poet as flour goes into the making of bread.
- Pablo Neruda, Memoirs (Confieso Que He Vivido: Memorias) (1974)

You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.
- Indira Gandhi, 1971

No one has a right to sit down and feel hopeless. There is too much work to do.
- Dorothy Day

If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.
- Antoine de Saint-Exupery

What good is a house, if you haven't got a decent planet to put it on?
- Henry David Thoreau

We cannot have peace if we are only concerned with peace. War is not an accident. It is the logical outcome of a certain way of life. If we want to attack war, we have to attack that way of life.
- A. J. Muste

Heresy is only another word for freedom of thought.
- Graham Greene, 1981

An act of love, a voluntary taking on oneself of some of the pain of the world, increases the courage and love and hope of all.
- Dorothy Day

When a true genius appears in this world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him.
- Jonathan Swift

We should take care, in inculcating patriotism into our boys and girls, that is a patriotism above the narrow sentiment which usually stops at one's country, and thus inspires jealousy and enmity in dealing with others... Our patriotism should be of the wider, nobler kind which recognises justice and reasonableness in the claims of others and which lead our country into comradeship with...the other nations of the world. The first step to this end is to develop peace and goodwill within our borders, by training our youth of both sexes to its practice as their habit of life, so that the jealousies of town against town, class against class and sect against sect no longer exist; and then to extend this good feeling beyond our frontiers towards our neighbours.
- Lord Baden-Powell

When I have money, I get rid of it quickly, lest it find a way into my heart.
- John Wesley

Angels can fly because they take themselves so lightly.
- G.K. Chesterton

The law of violence is not a law, but a simple fact which can only be a law when it does not meet with protest and opposition. It is like the cold, darkness and weight, which people had to put up with until recently when warmth, illumination and leverage were discovered....
- Leo Tolstoy

The more we sweat in peace the less we bleed in war.
- Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit

Nonviolence which is a quality of the heart, cannot come by an appeal to the brain.
- Mahatma Gandhi

Your life and my life flow into each other as wave flows into wave, and unless there is peace and joy and freedom for you, there can be no real peace or joy or freedom for me. To see reality--not as we expect it to be but as it is--is to see that unless we live for each other and in and through each other, we do not really live very satisfactorily; that there can really be life only where there really is, in just this sense, love.
- (Carl) Frederick Buechner

In a time of universal deceit - telling the truth is a revolutionary act.
- George Orwell

Nuclear war is inevitable, says the pessimists; Nuclear war is impossible, says the optimists; Nuclear war is inevitable unless we make it impossible, says the realists.
- Sydney J. Harris

Do you want long life and happiness? Strive for peace with all your heart.
- Psalm 34:12,14

War is an act of violence pushed to its utmost limits.
- Major General Carl von Clausewitz, 1832

When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall -- think of it, ALWAYS!
- Mahatma Gandhi

They make a desert and call it peace.
- Tactitus

Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals) is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission--to be of service to them whenever they require it... If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.
- St. Francis of Assisi

Women prevent the threads of life from being broken. The finest minds have always understood the peacemaking role of women.
- Mikhail Gorbachev

We challenge the culture of violence when we ourselves act in the certainty that violence is no longer acceptable, that it's tired and outdated no matter how many cling to it in the stubborn belief that it still works and that it's still valid.
- Gerard Vanderhaar

Peace is the work of justice indirectly, in so far as justice removes the obstacles to peace; but it is the work of charity (love) directly, since charity, according to its very notion, causes peace.

- Henry Miller

A bad peace is even worse than war.
- Tactitus

The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.
- Dante

The story of the human race is characterized by efforts to get along much more than by violent disputes, although it's the latter that make the history books. Violence is actually exceptional. The human race has survived because of cooperation, not aggression.
- Gerard Vanderhaar

In separateness lies the world's great misery; in compassion lies the world's true strength.
- Buddha

In 1989, thirteen nations comprising 1,695,000 people experienced nonviolent revolutions that succeeded beyond anyone's wildest expectations . . . If we add all the countries touched by major nonviolent actions in our century (the Philippines, South Africa . . . the independence movement in India . . .) the figure reaches 3,337,400,000, a staggering 65% of humanity! All this in the teeth of the assertion, endlessly repeated, that nonviolence doesn't work in the 'real' world.

If peace . . . only had the music and pageantry of war, there'd be no wars.

If Columbus had an advisory committee he would probably still be at the dock.

In the path of our happiness shall we find the learning for which we have chosen this lifetime.
- Richard Bach

Nothing is so strong as gentleness; nothing so gentle as real strength.
- St. Francis de Sales

Insanity in individuals is something rare - but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule.
- Friedrich Nietzsche

It is penance to work, to give oneself to others, to endure the pinpricks of community living.
- Dorothy Day

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of humans as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is not safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.
- Helen Keller

War is as outmoded as cannibalism, chattel slavery, blood-feuds, and dueling, an insult to God and humanity...a daily crucifixion of Christ.
- Muriel Lester

We do not inherit the earth from our fathers. We borrow it from our children.
- David Bower

In all things it is better to hope than to despair.
- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

We need, in every community, a group of angelic troublemakers.
- Bayard Rustin

The non-violent technique does not depend for its success on the goodwill of the oppressor, but rather on the unfailing assistance of God.
- Cesar Chavez

To see the earth as it truly is, small and blue in that eternal silence where it floats, is to see riders on the earth together, brothers on that bright loveliness in the eternal cold - brothers who know now they are truly brothers.
- Archibald Mc Leish

Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted
- Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

What good is it to me that Mary gave birth to the son of God fourteen hundred years ago, and I do not also give birth to the Son of God in my time and in my culture? We are all meant to be mothers of God. God is always needing to be born.
- Meister Eckhart

The two kinds of people who exist in this world [at any one time] are the decent and the indecent. Color, religion and nationality are irrelevant. Kindness, decency and behavior are what matters most. Our collective challenge, it seems, is to create a city and community where decent people of all races, ethnicities and religions can look into the faces of other decent people and see only one thing -- God's image smiling back.
- Rabbi Micah Greenstein

Rep. Ron Paul says that patriots such as Manning are essential for the country. Oakland top legal adviser resigns over Occupy raid
Article
-- Mayor Jean Quan's chief legal adviser resigned early this morning after what he called a "tragically unnecessary" police raid of the Occupy Oakland camp. Dan Siegel, a civil rights attorney and one of Oakland's most active and vocal police critics, said the city should have done more to work with campers before sending in police. -- "The city sent police to evict this camp, arrest people and potentially hurt them," Siegel said. "Obviously, we're not on the same page. It's an amazing show of force to move tents from a public place."

OCCUPY has already transformed U.S. politics
Article
The Occupy movement is less than two months old, but it has transformed U.S. politics and given vibrant form to the working class discontent hidden for years beneath the surface of society. It has revitalized the rich tradition of public protest in the U.S. and energized a whole range of grassroots struggles--and with the November 2 demonstrations in Oakland, Calif., that shut down the country's fifth-busiest port, it reintroduced the general strike to the U.S.

Obama lead the 'Goosestep Parade'
Article
"This mindset -- that the President has the power to secretly and unilaterally decree you guilty of being an Enemy Combatant and then take whatever steps he wants against you (warrantless eavesdropping, indefinite detention, consignment to Guantanamo, execution) — was until very recently the hallmark, the defining crux, of right-wing Bush/Cheney radicalism. That’s why Newt Gingrich -- Newt Gingrich — defends Obama's actions by claiming with a straight face that Awlaki was "found guilty" -- meaning "found guilty" by a secret White House committee and thus “has none of the civil liberties of the United States." Thanks to Barack Obama, this twisted mentality about what the "rule of law" means and how treason is decreed (not by a court, as the Constitution requires, but by the President acting alone) has now been enshrined as bipartisan consensus. That's why Think Progress, Bachmann, Romney and Gingrich all find full common ground in embracing it as a "success" to be celebrated." Glenn Greenwald

Stop the torture of lesbians in Ecuador
News
Both Credo Action and Amnesty International are reporting abuses of lesbians in Ecuador. It's shocking that this is happening in 2011: At 207 "clinics" across Ecuador, lesbians are held captive, raped, tortured, starved and beaten in an attempt to make them straight. But far from being clandestine, this systematic brutalization of women happens in plain sight, with the tacit approval of the government of Ecuador. Credo Action is circulating a petition to pressure them to stop this nonsense.

News
A petition is currently circulating to prevent another rate hike and harassment of solar customers by SDG&E. However, SDG&E is planning on inundating the California Public Utility Commission with all the lobbying force it can muster. We need more signatures.

Gay rights in DADT victory to vanish
Article
"One of the modern gay rights movement's most significant courtroom victories -- a California judge's ruling last year striking down the military's ban on gays and lesbians -- is about to vanish from the federal record books, as if it had never happened. It will do so because the Ninth Circuit Court refused on Wednesday to reconsider a ruling that erased the decision, and everything about it, and barred any gay rights lawyer from ever trying to use it to help in any other case." From SCOTUS Blog
