I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. I will not refuse to do the something I can do. To see the earth as it truly is, small and blue in that eternal silence where it floats, is to see riders on the earth together, brothers on that bright loveliness in the eternal cold - brothers who know now they are truly brothers. It is easier to lead men to combat, stirring up their passion, than to restrain them and direct them toward the patient labors of peace. At all the times you can, Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess. If in our daily life we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. This is the most basic kind of peace work. I destroy my enemies when I make them my friends. As long as ever you can. You can no more win a war than win an earthquake. No one is so foolish as to prefer to peace, war, in which, instead of sons burying their fathers, fathers bury their sons. Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it stands than to anything on which it is poured. Capitalism is the extraordinary belief that the nastiest of men, for the nastiest of reasons, will somehow work for the benefit of us all. Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. I am done with great things and big things, great institutions and big success, and I am for those tiny invisible molecular moral forces that work from individual to individual, creeping through the crannies of the world like so many rootlets, or like the capillary oozing of water, yet which if you give them time, will rend the hardest monuments of man's pride. The arms race can kill, though the weapons themselves may never be used...by their cost alone, armaments kill the poor by causing them to starve. An act of love, a voluntary taking on oneself of some of the pain of the world, increases the courage and love and hope of all. A peace that comes from fear and not from the heart is the opposite of peace. We cannot have peace if we are only concerned with peace. War is not an accident. It is the logical outcome of a certain way of life. If we want to attack war, we have to attack that way of life. War does not determine who is right - only who is left Instead of tug o' war, let's play hug o' war. It is folly to punish your neighbor by fire when you live next door. The world will not be inherited by the strongest, it will be inherited by those most able to change Life is a whim of several billion cells to be you for a while. Past the seeker as he prayed came the crippled and the beggar and the beaten. And seeing them...he cried, "Great God, how is it that a loving creator can see such things and yet do nothing about them?"...God said, "I did do something. I made you." The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens. In India when we meet and part we often say, "Namaste," which means: I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides; I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides; I honor the place in you of love, of light, of truth, of peace. I honor the place within you where if you are in that place in you and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us….. "Namaste." No man is an island entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. Non-violence is not inaction. It is not discussion. It is not for the timid or weak...Non-violence is hard work. It is the willingness to sacrifice. It is the patience to win. If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. We challenge the culture of violence when we ourselves act in the certainty that violence is no longer acceptable, that it's tired and outdated no matter how many cling to it in the stubborn belief that it still works and that it's still valid. If man does find the solution for world peace it will be the most revolutionary reversal of his record that we have ever known. Immorality: the morality of those who are having a better time. All we ask, God, is to be safe from the rain, just warm enough in winter to watch the snow with a smile, have enough to eat so that our hunger will not turn us to angry beasts, and sanity enough to make justice that will not kill our love of life. I don't do great things. I do small things with great love. And all good things are yours. Non-violence, which is the quality of the heart, cannot come by an appeal to the brain. Nobody was born nonviolent. No one was born charitable. None of us comes to these things by nature but only by conversion. The first duty of the nonviolent community is helping its members work upon themselves and come to conversion. It is easier to fight for one's principles than to live up to them. When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others. . . . [T]o live not with hands clenched to grasp, to strike, to hold tight to a life that is always slipping away the more tightly we hold it, but . . . to live with the hands stretched out both to give and receive with gladness. But the wisdom from above is pure, first of all; it is also peaceful, gentle and friendly; it is full of compassion and produces a harvest of good deals,; it is free from prejudice and hypocrisy. War is, at first, the hope that one will be better off; next, the expectation that the other fellow will be worse off; then, the satisfaction that he isn't any better off; and, finally, the surprise at everyone's being worse off. People have power when other people think they have power. Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past. Abba Poeman said about Abba Prior that every single day he made a fresh beginning. Joy is the most infallible sign of the presence of God. Everything, everything in war is barbaric . . . But the worst barbarity of war is that it forces men collectively to commit acts against which individually they would revolt with their whole being. By logic and reason we die hourly. By imagination we live. The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways: the point is to change it. The most potent weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed. We must have research for peace ... It would embrace the outstanding problems of morality. The time has come for man's intellect, his scientific method, to win over the immoral brutality and irrationality of war and militarism ... Now we are forced to eliminate from the world forever this vestige of prehistoric barbarism, this curse to the human race. If we just worry about the big picture, we are powerless. So my secret is to start right away doing whatever little work I can do. I try to give joy to one person in the morning, and remove the suffering of one person in the afternoon. If you and your friends do not despise the small work, a million people will remove a lot of suffering. That is the secret. Start right now. You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist. Every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. I have great belief in the fact that whenever there is chaos, it creates wonderful thinking. I consider chaos a gift. At least two Vietnam war veterans were victims of brutality and excessive force by Boston police on Monday night when officers began arresting upwards of 50 individuals with the Occupy Wall Street movement. - Police had earlier barred demonstrators from a section of land near Dewey Square where the group has set-up permanent camp.
