Occupy Wall Street is a tea party with brains
The "Bankster Revolutionaries" leading the Occupy Wall Street movement have more in common with the tea party movement than the hippie dream, with one key difference. They're smart enough to recognize the nation's problems aren't simply about taxes and the deficit. - They want jobs. They want the generation in power to acknowledge them. They want political change. They want responsibility in a culture that abdicates it. They want a decent future of opportunity. - If that isn't American, then what is? -- Another key difference between today's kids and their hippie forefathers: they're willing to gut it out. This 'N That

If we could raise one generation with unconditional love, there would be no Hitlers. We need to teach the next generation of children from Day One that they are responsible for their lives. Mankind's greatest gift, also its greatest curse, is that we have free choice. We can make our choices built from love or from fear..
- Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross

Man's mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.
- Oliver Wendell Holmes

Peace is that state in which fear of any kind is unknown.
- John Buchan

Then it was as if I suddenly saw the secret beauty of their hearts, the depths of their hearts where neither sin nor desire nor self-knowledge can reach, the core of their reality, the person that each one is in God's eyes. If only they could see themselves as they really are. If only we could see each other that way all the time, there would be no more war, no more hatred, no more cruelty, no more greed . . . I suppose the big problem would be that we would fall down and worship each other.
- Thomas Merton

We challenge the culture of violence when we ourselves act in the certainty that violence is no longer acceptable, that it's tired and outdated no matter how many cling to it in the stubborn belief that it still works and that it's still valid.
- Gerard Vanderhaar

Is it progress if a cannibal uses a knife and fork?
- Stanislaw Lem

The evils of government are directly proportional to the tolerance of the people.
- Frank Kent

Mounting an expedition to actualize a Compassionate Commonwealth of all peoples...is the great spiritual challenge of our time.

The ultimate measure of a person is not where one stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where one stands in times of challenge and controversy.
- Martin Luther King

The cause of violence is not ignorance. It is self-interest. ... Only reverence can restrain violence - reverence for human life and the environment .
- Rev. William Sloan Coffin, Jr.

I dream of giving birth to a child who will ask: "Mother, what was war?"
- Eve Merriam

Love the fellow of the resurrection, scooping up the dust and chanting "Live!"
- Emily Dickinson

Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives.
- J.S. Mill

If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.
- Nelson Mandela

All violence consists in some people forcing others, under threat of suffering or death, to do what the do not want to do.
- Leo Tolstoy

When we yield to discouragement it is usually because we give too much thought to the past and to the future.
- St. Therese of Lisieux

I'd like someone to mention the day that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to give his life serving others. I'd like somebody to say that day, that Martin Luther King tried to love somebody. I want you to say that day, that I tried to be right on the war question. I want you to be able to say that day, that I did try to feed the hungry . . . I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity. Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice; say that I was a drum major for peace; I was a drum major for righteousness . . . I want to leave a committed life behind.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root."
- Henry David Thoreau, Walden

The longer we listen to one another - with real attention - the more commonality we will find in all our lives. That is, if we are careful to exchange with one another life stories and not simply opinions.
- Barbara Deming

The right to swing my fist ends where the other man's nose begins
- Oliver Wendell Holmes

Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty, lies opportunity.
- Albert Einstein

Through Gandhi and my own life experience, I have learned about nonviolence. I believe that human life is a very special gift from God, and that no one has a right to take that away in any cause, however just. I am convinced that nonviolence is more powerful than violence.
- Cesar Chavez

If we work in marble, it will perish; if we work upon brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds and instill into them just principles, we are then engraving upon tablets which no time will efface, but will brighten and brighten to all eternity.
- Daniel Webster

We cannot have peace if we are only concerned with peace. War is not an accident. It is the logical outcome of a certain way of life. If we want to attack war, we have to attack that way of life.
- A. J. Muste

When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it?

If we just worry about the big picture, we are powerless. So my secret is to start right away doing whatever little work I can do. I try to give joy to one person in the morning, and remove the suffering of one person in the afternoon. If you and your friends do not despise the small work, a million people will remove a lot of suffering. That is the secret. Start right now.
- Sister Chän Khöng

I resolve to speak ill of no man whatever, not even in a matter of truth; but rather by some means excuse the faults I hear charged upon others, and upon proper occasions speak all the good I know of everybody.
- Benjamin Franklin

A great many people think they are thinking when they are just rearranging their prejudices.
- William James

What a cruel thing is war: to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joys and happiness God has granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors, and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world.

A time will come when a politician who has willfully made war and promoted international dissension will be as sure of the dock and much surer of the noose than a private homicide. It is not reasonable that those who gamble with men's lives should not stake their own.

- St. John of the Cross

Your life and my life flow into each other as wave flows into wave, and unless there is peace and joy and freedom for you, there can be no real peace or joy or freedom for me. To see reality--not as we expect it to be but as it is--is to see that unless we live for each other and in and through each other, we do not really live very satisfactorily; that there can really be life only where there really is, in just this sense, love.
- (Carl) Frederick Buechner

Whenever you are in doubt or when the self becomes too much with you, try the following experiment: Recall the face of the poorest and most helpless person you have ever seen and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be for any use to him or to her . . . The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life.
- Jane Addams

The problems of this world are so gigantic that some are paralysed by their own uncertainty. Courage and wisdom are needed to reach out above this sense of helplessness. Desire for vengeance against deeds of hatred offers no solution. An eye for an eye makes the world blind. If we wish to choose the other path, we will have to search for ways to break the spiral of animosity. To fight evil one must also recognize one's own responsibility. The values for which we stand must be expressed in the way we think of, and how we deal with, our fellow humans.
- - From the Christmas Message 2001 of HM Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands

Of all the frictional resistances, the one that most retards human movement is ignorance.
- Nikola Tesla

If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. Wherever you are, if you are following your bliss, you are enjoying that refreshment, that life within you, all the time.
- Joseph Campbell

If it were proved to me that in making war, my ideal had a chance of being realized, I would still say "No" to war. For one does not create human society on mounds of corpses.

He that cannot forgive others, breaks the bridge over which he must pass himself; for every man has a need to be forgiven.

The human mind likes a strange idea as little as the body likes a strange protein and resists it with a similar energy.

It is only by feeling your love that the poor will forgive you for the gifts of bread.
- St. Vincent de Paul

We must be the change we wish to see.

- George Washington

If we do not change our direction we are likely to end up where we are headed for.
- Chinese Proverb

Justice is truth in action.
- Benjamin Disraeli

The point of nonviolence is to build a floor, a strong new floor, beneath which we can no longer sink. A platform which stands a few feet above napalm, torture, exploitation, poison gas, A and H bombs, the works. Give man a decent place to stand.
- Joan Baez

Peace is more important than all justice; and peace was not made for the sake of justice, but justice for the sake of peace.
- Martin Luther (1483-1546)

Heresy is only another word for freedom of thought.
- Graham Greene, 1981

The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within reach, is joy. There is radiance and glory in the darkness, could we but see, and to see, we have only to look. I beseech you to look.
- From a letter written by Fra Giovanni, 1513

Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it stands than to anything on which it is poured.
- Anonymous

No one has a right to sit down and feel hopeless. There is too much work to do.
- Dorothy Day

To see the world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour.
- William Blake

Bless your persecutors; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Have the same attitude toward all. Put away ambitious thoughts and associate with those who are lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Never repay injury with injury. See that your conduct is honorable in the eyes of all. If possible, live peacefully with everyone. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves; leave that to God's wrath, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine; I will repay," says the Lord. But "If your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; by doing this you will heap burning coals upon their heads." Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good.
- Romans 12:14-21

"Enough is enough!"

By Nicholas Kristof - "Occupy Wall Street" was initially treated as a joke, but after a couple of weeks it’s gaining traction. The crowds are still tiny by protest standards — mostly in the hundreds, swelling during periodic marches — but similar occupations are bubbling up in Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington [19 cities in California alone! http://www.occupytogether.org/events/west/california/]. David Paterson, the former New York governor, dropped by, and labor unions are lending increasing support. - I tweeted that the protest reminded me a bit of Tahrir Square in Cairo, and that raised eyebrows. True, no bullets are whizzing around, and the movement won’t unseat any dictators. But there is the same cohort of alienated young people, and the same savvy use of Twitter and other social media to recruit more participants. Most of all, there’s a similar tide of youthful frustration with a political and economic system that protesters regard as broken, corrupt, unresponsive and unaccountable. - "This was absolutely inspired by Tahrir Square, by the Arab Spring movement," said Tyler Combelic, 27, a Web designer from Brooklyn who is a spokesman for the occupiers.

What does it mean to be a feminist?
Article
By Kit-Bacon of Fallbrook: "What does it mean to be a feminist today, a mad feminist? I think it means a lot of things, some I’m still learning. But I do know it means seeing people roll their eyes at the mention of consciousness-raising groups, those silly little things that turned on our voices, that aroused our sexuality, that confirmed our personhood. It means a persistent gendered wage gap that in 2009 paid women a median wage equating to about 80¢ to each $1.00 men earned. [Read more]

Student Debt Is Killing the Economy and our Youth
Article
"Student debt has grown by 511 percent since 1999. At that time, only $90 billion in student loans were outstanding—by the second quarter of 2011, that balance was up to $550 billion, according to the New York Fed. And the Department of Education estimates that outstanding loans total closer to $805 billion—and that number will pass $1 trillion soon. As student loans rise, so has delinquency. Phil Izzo at the Wall Street Journal reported that 11.2 percent of student loans were more than 90 days past due and that rate was steadily going up." Corporate greed is killing an entire generation. Tenn. Photo ID Law is More Voter Suppression
Article
By Roy Herron - a Democratic state Senator in Tennessee. -- When my 94-year-old mother was born, women were not allowed to vote. But then Tennessee ratified the 19th Amendment, and for seven decades Mother has voted faithfully. This year, my Republican colleagues in the legislature took away that right when they made it harder for her -- and as many as 675,000 other Tennesseans -- to continue to vote.

Founding Fathers passed 1st whistleblower law
Article
What would the Founders have said about Wikileaks, whistle-blowers and Bradley Manning? - In 1778 Congress passed the first whistle blower law to protect two whistle-blowing soldiers from the retaliation from their powerful and well-connected commander. Fascinating parallel to the Manning case today. Obama's efforts to silence WikiLeaks and discredit Julian Assange do not uphold the founders principles.

Troy Davis - Justice crushed by a 'brilliant' mind
Article
Chief Justice Scalia Ruled That the Constitution Doesn't Prohibit Executing an Innocent Man in Troy Davis Case. Using his brilliant jurist mind, he undermines the foundation of our judicial system. Scalia is considered by some to be a "brilliant legal mind," but there is nothing brilliant about authorizing the murder of innocent people. This is his line of "brilliant" thinking:

RVs Wanted for Occupy Wall Street in San Diego
Article
Martha Sullivan is working with the organizers of Occupy San Diego, who are following the lead of Occupy Wall Street in NY. The organizers are looking for RVs to provide mobile "command centers" and emergency restrooms for 24/7 occupation in downtown San Diego. There is only 1 24/7 public restroom downtown, so we are getting creative! Timeframe is October-November, whatever you could spare -- PARTICULARLY starting about 10/7.

Occupy Wall St gaining critical mass fast

Violence caught on camera over the weekend of police arresting approximately 80 protesters and, in one now-notorious case, apparently spraying mace into the faces of female protesters has generated an outcry over the NYPD's "cowardly" use of force on peaceful protesters. Thanks to these two incidents, says one protester, Danny Garza, "Occupy Wall Street has gotten bigger than we ever thought it could be." - But the protest's profile cannot be measured purely in numbers of street protesters: on the periphery of Liberty Plaza is a parallel internet-based activism buttressing the movement. Under the banner of the virtual collective Anonymous, these "hacktivists" are now engaged in the physical action of street protest.

Mubarak tactics used by cops in Oakland
Article
On August 11, 2011 the Bay Area Rapid Transit Authority (BART) reportedly shut off mobile Internet and cell phone service inside segments of the BART transit system in anticipation of an expected protest. It was the first known time in United States history that a major government public transportation agency had taken such a step. Mubarak pulled this tyrannical tactic, and look where it put him: In the Egyptian court room, on a gurney inside a metal cage. The head of BART deserves the same justice for the same assault on American Constitutional rights. This is an egregious assault on our First Amendment rights.

Petition fraud video-captured in Oceanside

This video was shot by Max Disposti, Executive Director of the North County LGBTQ Resource Center. While walking with my husband along the beachfront of Oceanside Harbor in San Diego County, I used my cell phone to capture video of a woman collecting signatures at a booth that appeared to be an effort to protect kids from child molesters. I was shocked and disgusted when I realized that she was collecting signatures for the referendum to the FAIR Education Act.

Private contractors cost taxpayers more money
Article
NY TIMES: - "Despite a widespread belief that contracting out services to the private sector saves the federal government money, a new study suggests just the opposite — that the government actually pays more when it farms out work. The study found that in 33 of 35 occupations, the government actually paid billions of dollars more to hire contractors than it would have cost government employees to perform comparable services."

Obama: A disaster for civil liberties
Article
He may prove the most disastrous president in our history in terms of civil liberties. Protecting individual rights and liberties — apart from the right to be tax-free — seems barely relevant to candidates or voters. One man is primarily responsible for the disappearance of civil liberties from the national debate, and he is Barack Obama. While many are reluctant to admit it, Obama has proved a disaster not just for specific civil liberties but the civil liberties cause in the United States. By Jonathan Turley

Union denies use of Bus Drivers at Wall St protest
News
Business Week - A New York transit workers' union asked a federal judge in Manhattan to bar police from forcing its members to abandon their routes and transport anti-Wall Street demonstrators arrested for disorderly conduct. A court hearing is set for tomorrow on the request, said Jim Gannon, a spokesman for the union, which represents 38,000 members, including about 9,000 city bus drivers. Drivers were ordered on Oct. 1 to convey some of the 700 demonstrators arrested over the weekend during anti-Wall Street protests in lower Manhattan.

SD Tribe attempts to evict Blackwater from Rsvn
News
An American Indian tribe in San Diego County has been engaged in a four-month standoff with a military contractor that refuses to leave its reservation, according to documents recently filed in U.S. District Court. The story begins in 2010, when the Eagle Rock Training Center (ERTC), a private military training facility established by a former Blackwater executive, signed a 25-year lease agreement to conduct high-level combat training on land near Warner Springs owned by the Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeño Indians. The confrontation of Wall St. in SD is beginning

Oct. 2, 2011 - Hello everyone ~ Today I marched with the 99% group that will on Friday begin occupying San Diego. This is a bunch of smart young people that know that they have been ripped off and they don't like it. I was very impressed with they way the organize and the fact that they aren't a bunch of hooligans looking for action. [This is the nucleus group marching, from age 4 to 74] - There will never be enough profit for the corporatist, or elite rich or Fascists, or whatever you want to call them. Because they can never have enough profit they will start wars because with war the profits are unlimited. When they start the wars the poor and those without jobs, the same kids we see in the attached video, will become the cannon fodder. Therefore we must be legion with the 99% effort, remembering that all the Iraq and Afghanistan dead and wounded were also part of the 99%, like us.
