This 'N ThatNever underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups. - John Kenneth GalbraithIf we do not change our direction we are likely to end up where we are headed for. - Chinese Proverb We used to wonder where war lived, what it was that made it so vile. And now we realize that we know where it lives, that it is inside ourselves. - Albert Camus Those things of real worth in life are worth going to any length in love and respect to safeguard. - Julia Butterfly Hill When asked what he would do if he knew the world would end tomorrow, Martin Luther said, "I would plant a tree." - Martin Luther Then it was as if I suddenly saw the secret beauty of their hearts, the depths of their hearts where neither sin nor desire nor self-knowledge can reach, the core of their reality, the person that each one is in God's eyes. If only they could see themselves as they really are. If only we could see each other that way all the time, there would be no more war, no more hatred, no more cruelty, no more greed . . . I suppose the big problem would be that we would fall down and worship each other. - Thomas Merton I'm not disturbing the peace. I'm disturbing the war. - Ammon Hennacy, US Labor leader Peace is not an absence of war, it is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, justice. - Baruch Spinoza Those who are ready to sacrifice freedom for security ultimately will lose both. - Abraham Lincoln Someday, after we have mastered the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, shall harness for God the energies of love. Then for the second time in the history of the world, we will have discovered fire. - Teilhard de Chardin There will one day spring from the brain of science a machine or force so fearful in its potentialities, so absolutely terrifying, that even man, the fighter, who will dare torture and death in order to inflict torture and death, will be appalled, and so abandon war forever. - Thomas Edison Non-violence exacts a very high price from one who practices it. But once you are able to meet that demand then you can do most things. - Cesar Chavez When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others. - Peace Pilgrim Do all the good you can, - By all the means you can, Chaos is a name for any order that produces confusion in our minds. - George Santayana We do not inherit the earth from our fathers. We borrow it from our children. - David Bower A Rattlesnake, if Cornered will become so angry it will bite itself. That is exactly what the harboring of hate and resentment against others is -- a biting of oneself. We think we are harming others in holding these spites and hates, but the deeper harm is to ourselves. - E. Stanley Jones The question is not, do we go to church; the question is, have we been converted. The crux of Christianity is not whether or not we give donations to popular charities but whether or not we are really committed to the poor. - Joan Chittester, OSB The Bible has a very meaningful expression: The Spirit makes all things new. We are those who grow old, and we want everything done to our aged standards. The Spirit is never old; the Spirit is always young. - Oscar Romero Mounting an expedition to actualize a Compassionate Commonwealth of all peoples...is the great spiritual challenge of our time. - Sam Keen The law of violence is not a law, but a simple fact which can only be a law when it does not meet with protest and opposition. It is like the cold, darkness and weight, which people had to put up with until recently when warmth, illumination and leverage were discovered.... - Leo Tolstoy It's a bit embarrassing to have been concerned with the human problem all one's life and find at the end that one has no more to offer by way of advice than "try to be a little better." - Aldous Huxley |
Articles & News: President Obama Guts New EPA Standards Article President Obama has awarded polluters at the expense of improved air quality, the health of US citizens, and a decrease in ozone levels. Gov. Brown should dump the dump in North County News "Siting a dump on the San Luis Rey River was borne of a brainstorm by a speculator with a purchase option and transformed into the only site in the entirety of San Diego County pre-zoned as a landfill by a clever developer. It was done by voter trickery using the initiative process with a slick million-dollar brochure mailing by the trash dump developer, already rejected three times by expert consultant studies for this same site." This project will die if Gov. Brown just signs the bill. Founding Fathers passed 1st whistleblower law Article What would the Founders have said about Wikileaks, whistle-blowers and Bradley Manning? - In 1778 Congress passed the first whistle blower law to protect two whistle-blowing soldiers from the retaliation from their powerful and well-connected commander. Fascinating parallel to the Manning case today. Obama's efforts to silence WikiLeaks and discredit Julian Assange do not uphold the founders principles.
What does it mean to be a feminist? Article By Kit-Bacon of Fallbrook: "What does it mean to be a feminist today, a mad feminist? I think it means a lot of things, some I’m still learning. But I do know it means seeing people roll their eyes at the mention of consciousness-raising groups, those silly little things that turned on our voices, that aroused our sexuality, that confirmed our personhood. It means a persistent gendered wage gap that in 2009 paid women a median wage equating to about 80¢ to each $1.00 men earned. [Read more]

Private contractors cost taxpayers more money News NY TIMES: - "Despite a widespread belief that contracting out services to the private sector saves the federal government money, a new study suggests just the opposite — that the government actually pays more when it farms out work. The study found that in 33 of 35 occupations, the government actually paid billions of dollars more to hire contractors than it would have cost government employees to perform comparable services."

Opponents of gay marriage do not want the public to see the pathetic, weak arguments they presented.

San Onofre: a Trillion Dollar Threat to SoCal Article By Russell D. Hoffman - "San Onofre Nuclear Waste Generating Station is a pair of aging Pressurized Water Reactors in the midst of Southern California's burgeoning, vibrant, forward-thinking, technologically advanced, interconnected, health-conscious population. - It doesn't belong here at all, and it's well past time to get rid of it. Conceived in the 1950s, the two units that still operate were designed in the 60s, built in the 70s, went online in the 80s, and have been falling apart ever since. And they have been piling up nuclear waste along our coast ever since, too -- at the horrific rate of 500 pounds per day, with nowhere to put it. There are over eight million pounds of so-called "spent fuel" at the site right now -- making it potentially worse than Fukushima in an accident.
