Life only demands from you the strength you possess. Only one feat is possible- not to have to run away.
- Dag Hammarskjold (1905-1961)Former UN General Secretary

By logic and reason we die hourly. By imagination we live.
- John Butler Yeats

When the rich make war, it's the poor that die.
- Jean-Paul Sartre

Only the poor knew the meaning of life; the rich and the safe had to guess.

- Pindar

No man is an island entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
- John Donne

What all men fear, I too must fear - how barren and pointless a thought!
- Tao Te Ching

Five enemies of peace inhabit with us--avarice, ambition, envy, anger, and pride; if these were to be banished, we should infallibly enjoy perpetual peace.
- Petrarch

The belief in the possibility of a short decisive war appears to be one of the most ancient and dangerous of human illusions.
- Robert Lynd (1879-1949), Anglo-Irish essayist, journalist

The law of violence is not a law, but a simple fact which can only be a law when it does not meet with protest and opposition. It is like the cold, darkness and weight, which people had to put up with until recently when warmth, illumination and leverage were discovered....
- Leo Tolstoy

Hitler and Mussolini were only the primary spokesmen for the attitude of domination and craving for power that are in the heart of almost everyone. Until the source is cleared, there will always be confusion and hate, wars and class antagonisms.
- J. Krishnamurti

Nobody was born nonviolent. No one was born charitable. None of us comes to these things by nature but only by conversion. The first duty of the nonviolent community is helping its members work upon themselves and come to conversion.

The ultimate measure of a person is not where one stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where one stands in times of challenge and controversy.
- Martin Luther King

The greatest disease in the West today is not TB or leprosy; it is being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for. We can cure physical diseases with medicine, but the only cure for loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love. There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread but there are many more dying for a little love. The poverty in the West is a different kind of poverty - it is not only a poverty of loneliness but also of spirituality. There's a hunger for love, as there is a hunger for God.

If we work in marble, it will perish; if we work upon brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds and instill into them just principles, we are then engraving upon tablets which no time will efface, but will brighten and brighten to all eternity.

One of the reasons his minimum assets have increased is because he broke out properties last year into separate companies." -ROLL CALL

Exxon Mobil Pipeline Co. said its oil pipeline spill into Montana's scenic Yellowstone River will cost an estimated $42.6 million, according to documents obtained Monday by the Associated Press. The July 1 pipeline break spilled about 42,000 gallons, or 1,000 barrels, of crude oil into the waterway upstream of Billings, the state's most populous city.

Army widow confronts Rumsfeld in public

Army Ranger's widow booted from Donald Rumsfeld's book signing. - Ashley Joppa-Hagemann introduced herself to Rumsfeld, then accused him of being responsible for the death of her husband, Staff Sgt. Jared Hagemann, because "You lied to him, and now he's dead!" He took his own life - after eight deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. The Army found Staff Sgt. Hagemann's body at a training area of Joint Base Lewis McChord a few weeks ago. Her confrontation has cast a dark shadow over the villainous Rumsfeld as he tries to move from book signing to book signing.

San Onofre: a Trillion Dollar Threat to SoCal
By Russell D. Hoffman - "San Onofre Nuclear Waste Generating Station is a pair of aging Pressurized Water Reactors in the midst of Southern California's burgeoning, vibrant, forward-thinking, technologically advanced, interconnected, health-conscious population. - It doesn't belong here at all, and it's well past time to get rid of it. Conceived in the 1950s, the two units that still operate were designed in the 60s, built in the 70s, went online in the 80s, and have been falling apart ever since. And they have been piling up nuclear waste along our coast ever since, too -- at the horrific rate of 500 pounds per day, with nowhere to put it. There are over eight million pounds of so-called "spent fuel" at the site right now -- making it potentially worse than Fukushima in an accident.

Amnesty for the Indefensible Banksters
Robert Scheer: "The $20 billion or so that the banks would pony up is, for them, chump change -- compared with the trillions that the Fed and other public agencies spent to bail them out. The banks were given direct cash subsidies and virtually zero-interest loans, and the Fed took $2 trillion in bad paper off their hands, while the banks exacerbated the banking crisis they had created through additional shady practices, including fraudulent mortgage foreclosures." Yet the Obama administration is pushing to squash investigations and prosecutions of these banksters!

The First Thing They Took Away-Our Obama Buttons
Peter Anderson, jailed with the first 52 arrested in front of the White House for protesting against the proposed 1,700 mile Keystone XL pipeline, writes a compelling article on his incarceration. This pipeline, proposed to extend from the tar sands of Alberta to the refineries at Port Arthur, Texas, "would result in massive increases of carbon into the atmosphere, crippling any chance to stabilize the planet’s climate." Scientist Jim Hansen grimly predicts that if this goes through, it's "game over." As of Aug. 25, 322 have been handcuffed in the Tar Sands Action. This issue is a LITMUS TEST of Obama: He can kill the pipeline with a simple VETO. He needs no approval from Congress,

Report: Issa 2nd richest member of Congress
ROLL CALL, the Congressional publisher, shows Issa is the 2nd richest member of Congress, with a net worth of $220 million.

D.C. Protests That Make Big Oil Quake
"More than 2,100 people say they’ll risk arrest there during the next two weeks demonstrating in front of the White House. They oppose the Keystone XL pipeline project, designed to carry heavy crude oil from the tar sands of Alberta, Canada, to refineries on the U.S. Gulf Coast. This would be the Godzilla of all pipelines across America", and Pres. Obama has the power to stop it. By Amy Goodman

Jon Stewart: Is Michele Bachmann's husband gay?

Marcus Bachmann, husband of Michele Bachmann, who referred to gays as uneducated "barbarians", is engaged in a psychotherapy practice, in which, it is alleged, he engages in "repairative" therapy to "cure gays". This was great comedy fodder for Jon Stewart and Jerry Seinfeld, in this very entertaining skit.

No deportation for CA gay married couple
Cathedral City gay married couple won’t be split apart by deportation. Alex Benshimol, 47, had been facing deportation to his homeland of Venezuela after overstaying his visitor visa. He legally married his partner, Doug Gentry, 53, in Connecticut in 2010. They have been together for about five years. The judge dropped the case after the Obama administration relaxed federal guidelines on low-priority deportation cases, such as when the deportation target has a spouse who is an American citizen.

Broken oil pipeline creates pollution disaster

Exxon Mobil Estimates Oil spill in Yellowstone River will Cost Over $42 Million. Now comes the Godzilla of all pipelines: The proposed Keystone XL pipeline is a terrible idea. The oil it will carry from Canada’s tar sands will travel all the way from northern Alberta to the Gulf of Mexico. Think: oil spilling all over America's heartland. Think: way more CO2 all over the atmosphere, since the tar sands are among the most carbon-intensive of all the fossil fuels.

Dick Cheney profiteering from his War Crimes

As former Vice President Dick Cheney publishes his long-awaited memoir, Democracy Now! speaks with Salon.com political and legal blogger Glenn Greenwald about his recent article on Cheney, "The Fruits of Elite Immunity." "Dick Cheney goes around the country profiting off of this sleazy, sensationalistic, self-serving book, basically profiting from his crimes ..."

Our wars are condemning our soldiers to Hell

The people who should be worried about going to hell are the bastards who sent these soldiers over there for no good reason, and then refuse to pay for the help they need when they come back: A soldier's widow says his fellow Army Rangers wouldn't do anything to help him before he took his own life - after eight deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. The Army found Staff Sgt. Jared Hagemann's body at a training area of Joint Base Lewis McChord a few weeks ago.

Wallace, insinuating that Gay Marriage is judicial activism, asks where is it in the Constitution that permits gay mariage. "Where is the right to interracial marriage in the Constitution" asked Ted Olsen of Wallace. Brilliant arguments by Olson. When Wallace insists the voters have the right to outlaw gay marriage, Olson asks if it would be constitutional for the voters to force blacks to drink at separate water fountains.
