This 'N That

The more we sweat in peace the less we bleed in war.
- Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit

What is man?
- Hope turned to dust.

The non-violent technique does not depend for its success on the goodwill of the oppressor, but rather on the unfailing assistance of God.
- Cesar Chavez

Gandhi once declared that it was his wife who unwittingly taught him the effectiveness of nonviolence. Who better than women should know that battles can be won without resort to physical strength? Who better than we should know all the power that resides in noncooperation?
- Barbara Deming

Nothing could be worse than the fear that one had given up too soon, and left one unexpended effort that might have saved the world.
- Jane Addams

When we yield to discouragement it is usually because we give too much thought to the past and to the future.
- St. Therese of Lisieux

Violence just hurts those who are already hurt...Instead of exposing the brutality of the oppressor, it justifies it.
- Cesar Chavez

Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.
- Thomas Edison

When asked what he would do if he knew the world would end tomorrow, Martin Luther said, "I would plant a tree."
- Martin Luther

War does not determine who is right - only who is left
- Bertrand Russell

As long as ever you can.
- John Wesley

The miracle of the wicked is reinforced by the weakness of the virtuous.
- Winston Churchill

The hottest fires in hell are reserved for those who remain neutral in times of moral crisis.
- Edmund Burke

Each person has inside a basic decency and goodness. If he listens to it and acts on it, he is giving a great deal of what it is the world needs most. It is not complicated but it takes courage. It takes courage for a person to listen to his own goodness and act on it.
- Pablo Casals

We can’t become nonviolent on the basis of intellectual conviction. Commitment to nonviolence demands a very profound conversion of mind and heart. If we take the time to pray with Jesus, we too will be converted in mind and heart. It won’t work if we try to reason it out. The only way is through a change of heart, a coming into a way of being that is the way of Jesus.
- Bishop Thomas Gumbleton

You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.
- Indira Gandhi, 1971

When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it?
- Eleanor Roosevelt

Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction.
- E. F. Schumacher

Everything, everything in war is barbaric . . . But the worst barbarity of war is that it forces men collectively to commit acts against which individually they would revolt with their whole being.
- Ellen Key, 1916

For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.
- Pythagoras

Peace is a gift,
- It is a gift we give to ourselves,

Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds them. We live by the death of others. We are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.
- Leonardo Da Vinci

And they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
- Isaiah 2:4

When I have money, I get rid of it quickly, lest it find a way into my heart.
- John Wesley

The direct use of force is such a poor solution to any problem, it is generally employed only by small children and large nations.
- David Friedman

The maxim that people should not have a right till they are ready to exercise it properly, is worthy of the fool in the old story who resolved not to go into the water till he had learned to swim.
- Macaulay

To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best day and night to make you everybody else, means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting.
- e.e.cummings

Nonviolence doesn't always work -- but violence never does.
- Madge Michaels-Cyrus

When we treat man as he is, we make him worse than he is; when we treat him as if he already were what he potentially could be, we make him what he should be.
- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Those things of real worth in life are worth going to any length in love and respect to safeguard.
- Julia Butterfly Hill

The story of the human race is characterized by efforts to get along much more than by violent disputes, although it's the latter that make the history books. Violence is actually exceptional. The human race has survived because of cooperation, not aggression.
- Gerard Vanderhaar

. . . [T]o live not with hands clenched to grasp, to strike, to hold tight to a life that is always slipping away the more tightly we hold it, but . . . to live with the hands stretched out both to give and receive with gladness.
- (Carl) Frederick Buechner

War is an act of violence pushed to its utmost limits.
- Major General Carl von Clausewitz, 1832

The ultimate measure of a person is not where one stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where one stands in times of challenge and controversy.
- Martin Luther King

A solid rock is not disturbed by the wind; even so, a wise person is not agitated by praise or blame.
- Dhammapada

At all the times you can,
- To all the people you can,

They make a desert and call it peace.
- Tactitus

The longer we listen to one another - with real attention - the more commonality we will find in all our lives. That is, if we are careful to exchange with one another life stories and not simply opinions.
- Barbara Deming

The soul of our country needs to be awakened . . .When leaders act contrary to conscience, we must act contrary to leaders.
- Veterans Fast for Life

Many oppressors are also oppressed. Nonviolent confrontation is the only confrontation that allows us to respond realistically to such complexity.
- Jane Meyerding

There will one day spring from the brain of science a machine or force so fearful in its potentialities, so absolutely terrifying, that even man, the fighter, who will dare torture and death in order to inflict torture and death, will be appalled, and so abandon war forever.
- Thomas Edison

There are three truths: my truth, your truth and the truth.
- Chinese Proverb

Non-violence, which is the quality of the heart, cannot come by an appeal to the brain.
- Cesar Chavez

Dust turned to hope.
- Elie Weisel

Why not go out on a limb? That's where the fruit is.
- Will Rogers

The Election March of the Trolls
Article
By Chris Hedges - "We have begun the election march of the trolls. They have crawled out of the sewers of public relations firms, polling organizations, the commercial media, the two corporate political parties and elected office to fill the airwaves with inanities and absurdities until the final inanity -- the 2012 presidential election. Journalists, whose role has been reduced to purveyors of court gossip, whether on Fox or MSNBC, descend in swarms to report pseudo-events ..."

Amnesty for the Indefensible Banksters
Article
Robert Scheer: "The $20 billion or so that the banks would pony up is, for them, chump change -- compared with the trillions that the Fed and other public agencies spent to bail them out. The banks were given direct cash subsidies and virtually zero-interest loans, and the Fed took $2 trillion in bad paper off their hands, while the banks exacerbated the banking crisis they had created through additional shady practices, including fraudulent mortgage foreclosures." Yet the Obama administration is pushing to squash investigations and prosecutions of these banksters!

The First Thing They Took Away-Our Obama Buttons
Article
Peter Anderson, jailed with the first 52 arrested in front of the White House for protesting against the proposed 1,700 mile Keystone XL pipeline, writes a compelling article on his incarceration. This pipeline, proposed to extend from the tar sands of Alberta to the refineries at Port Arthur, Texas, "would result in massive increases of carbon into the atmosphere, crippling any chance to stabilize the planet’s climate." Scientist Jim Hansen grimly predicts that if this goes through, it's "game over." As of Aug. 25, 322 have been handcuffed in the Tar Sands Action. This issue is a LITMUS TEST of Obama: He can kill the pipeline with a simple VETO. He needs no approval from Congress,

It’s the kind of thing that the Securities and Exchange Commission might want to look into."

Issa’s Reported Net Worth Soared last year
News
"House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) saw the reported value of his personal assets nearly double last year, and the only thing that may prevent him from claiming the title as the richest Member of Congress is $75 million in loans he secured in 2010. One of the reasons his minimum assets have increased is because he broke out properties last year into separate companies." -ROLL CALL

He legally married his partner, Doug Gentry, 53, in Connecticut in 2010. They have been together for about five years. The judge dropped the case after the Obama administration relaxed federal guidelines on low-priority deportation cases, such as when the deportation target has a spouse who is an American citizen.

San Onofre: a Trillion Dollar Threat to SoCal
Article
By Russell D. Hoffman - "San Onofre Nuclear Waste Generating Station is a pair of aging Pressurized Water Reactors in the midst of Southern California's burgeoning, vibrant, forward-thinking, technologically advanced, interconnected, health-conscious population. - It doesn't belong here at all, and it's well past time to get rid of it. Conceived in the 1950s, the two units that still operate were designed in the 60s, built in the 70s, went online in the 80s, and have been falling apart ever since. And they have been piling up nuclear waste along our coast ever since, too -- at the horrific rate of 500 pounds per day, with nowhere to put it. There are over eight million pounds of so-called "spent fuel" at the site right now -- making it potentially worse than Fukushima in an accident.

Broken oil pipeline creates pollution disaster

Exxon Mobil Estimates Oil spill in Yellowstone River will Cost Over $42 Million. Now comes the Godzilla of all pipelines: The proposed Keystone XL pipeline is a terrible idea. The oil it will carry from Canada’s tar sands will travel all the way from northern Alberta to the Gulf of Mexico. Think: oil spilling all over America's heartland. Think: way more CO2 all over the atmosphere, since the tar sands are among the most carbon-intensive of all the fossil fuels.

Our wars are condemning our soldiers to Hell

The people who should be worried about going to hell are the bastards who sent these soldiers over there for no good reason, and then refuse to pay for the help they need when they come back: A soldier's widow says his fellow Army Rangers wouldn't do anything to help him before he took his own life - after eight deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. The Army found Staff Sgt. Jared Hagemann's body at a training area of Joint Base Lewis McChord a few weeks ago.

"Where is the right to interracial marriage in the Constitution" asked Ted Olsen of Wallace. Brilliant arguments by Olson.
