The noble, moral courage of Bradley Manning
If the allegations against Pvt. Bradley Manning are true, Bradley Manning knowingly risked his liberty to take action against those acts, in the hope of exposing those responsible and triggering worldwide reforms. It's hard to dispute that these leaks achieved exactly that, but even if they hadn't, his conduct is profoundly commendable, and the world needs far more, not fewer, Bradley Mannings. This 'N That

Until lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunters.
- African Proverb

The world cannot continue to wage war like physical giants and to seek peace like intellectual pygmies
- Basil O'Connor

You can't lead anyone else further than you have gone yourself.
- Gene Mauch

I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.
- Albert Einstein

Mankind will never win lasting peace so long as men use their full resources only in tasks of war. While we are yet at peace, let us mobilize the potentialities, particularly the moral and spiritual potentialities, which we usually reserve for war.
- John Foster Dulles, War or Peace 1950.

By doing service, heart and mind are purified -- be convinced of this! To engage in service is a very powerful sadhana (spiritual discipline); do not become impatient. Rather serve your people with the utmost calm and have a kind word for everyone.
- Sri Anandamayee Ma

Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty, lies opportunity.
- Albert Einstein

We must have research for peace ... It would embrace the outstanding problems of morality. The time has come for man's intellect, his scientific method, to win over the immoral brutality and irrationality of war and militarism ... Now we are forced to eliminate from the world forever this vestige of prehistoric barbarism, this curse to the human race.
- Linus Pauling

Nobody was born nonviolent. No one was born charitable. None of us comes to these things by nature but only by conversion. The first duty of the nonviolent community is helping its members work upon themselves and come to conversion.
- Lanza del Vasto

The bomb that fell on Hiroshima fell on America, too.
- Hermann Hagedorn

Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess.
- Oscar Wilde

The gloom of the world is but a shadow. Behind it, yet within reach, is joy. There is radiance and glory in the darkness, could we but see, and to see, we have only to look. I beseech you to look.
- From a letter written by Fra Giovanni, 1513

And all good things are yours.
- Swedish proverb

The idea of absolute freedom is fiction. It's based on the idea of an independent self. But, in fact, there's no such thing. There's no self without other people. There's no self without sunlight. There's no self without dew. And water. And bees to pollinate the food we eat....So the idea of behaving in a way that doesn't acknowledge those reciprocal relationships is not really freedom, it's indulgence.
- Peter Coyote

To resort to power one need not be violent, and to speak to conscience one need not be meek. The most effective action both resorts to power and engages conscience. Nonviolent actions does not have to get others to be nice. It can in effect force them to consult their consciences. Nor does it have to petition those in power to do something about a situation. It can face the authorities with a new fact and say: Accept this new situation which we have created.
- Barbara Deming

To see the world in a grain of sand and heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand and eternity in an hour.
- William Blake

Peace begins when the hungry are fed.
- Anonymous

It is penance to work, to give oneself to others, to endure the pinpricks of community living.
- Dorothy Day

What good is a house, if you haven't got a decent planet to put it on?
- Henry David Thoreau

Since we are to be conformed to the image of Christ, how can we then fight our enemies with the sword? ... Spears and swords of iron we leave to those who, alas, consider human blood and swine's blood of well-nigh equal value ...
- Menno Simons, 1539 A.D

We cannot have peace if we are only concerned with peace. War is not an accident. It is the logical outcome of a certain way of life. If we want to attack war, we have to attack that way of life.
- A. J. Muste

It is reasonable that every one who asks justice should do justice.
- Thomas Jefferson

For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.
- Pythagoras

Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals) is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission--to be of service to them whenever they require it... If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.
- St. Francis of Assisi

Let us plant dates even though those who plant them will never eat them. We must live by the love of what we will never see. This is the secret discipline. It is a refusal to let the creative act be dissolved away in immediate sense experience, and a stubborn commitment to the future of our grandchildren. Such disciplined love is what has given prophets, revolutionaries, and saints the courage to die for the future they envisaged. They make their own bodies the seed of their highest hope.
- Ruben Alves, Tomorrow’s Child

Then it was as if I suddenly saw the secret beauty of their hearts, the depths of their hearts where neither sin nor desire nor self-knowledge can reach, the core of their reality, the person that each one is in God's eyes. If only they could see themselves as they really are. If only we could see each other that way all the time, there would be no more war, no more hatred, no more cruelty, no more greed . . . I suppose the big problem would be that we would fall down and worship each other.
- Thomas Merton

The poor cannot be convinced that God is neutral . . .
- Author Unknown

Peace is more important than all justice; and peace was not made for the sake of justice, but justice for the sake of peace.
- Martin Luther (1483-1546)

Articles & News:

Oceanside Forced to Continue Affordable Housing
The Oceanside City Council was handed a petition with 14,000 signatures (twice the number required) on June 23, and as a result can not repeal the existing affordable housing law, but instead is forced to continue providing it, at least in the short term.

Grandma is part of 'The Greatest Generation'
The Ramona Sentinel published the following letter by Dave Patterson, reminding us that Grandma, who is part of "The Greatest Generation" during WW-II, which made extraordinary sacrifices for her country and the future youth of the nation. Now this new generation wants to repeal all the great social programs for which she sacrificed. The radical right wants to send Grandma into penury and pain.

America's role in this Greek tragedy
The European authorities are playing a dangerous game of "chicken" with Greece right now. It is overdue for US members of Congress to exercise some oversight as to what our government's role is in this process, and how we might be preparing for a Greek debt default. Depending on how it happens, this default could have serious repercussions for the international financial system, the US economy and, indeed, the world economy.

The 'Debt Ceiling' law is un-Constitutional
Section Four of the Fourteenth Amendment states, at its outset, that "the validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned." From this language, it's not hard to argue that the Constitution places both payments on the debt and payments owed to groups like Social Security recipients--pensioners, that is--above the vagaries of Congressional politics. These debts have to be paid, the argument would be, in full, on time, without question. If Congress won't pay them, then the executive must.

Preserve Calavera Files Lawsuit on Oside Council
In May the Oceanside City Council overruled their own Planning Commission and voted to certify the EIR for the Melrose Extension Project. In response, Preserve Calavera has filed a legal action in opposition to this project as now proposed.

Universal Health Care: Can We Afford Anything Less
But the division between problem of cost and the problem of coverage is misguided. It is founded on the assumption, common among neoclassical economists, that the current market system is efficient. Instead, however, the current system is inherently inefficient; it is the very source of the rising cost pressures. In fact, the only way we can control health-care costs and avoid fiscal and economic catastrophe is to establish a single-payer system with universal coverage.

Military spending that will give you a CHILL
The United States Military is spending $20.2 billion a year for air-conditioning the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. But this is just the tip of the absurdist iceberg. I'm sure we're spending hundreds of billions more on equally outrageous stuff. How else to explain the astonishing fact that, according to the Pentagon, each US soldier in Afghanistan costs $1.2 million a year! By Dave Lindorf

Tires slashed on 51 floats in Chicago Gay Pride
"I firmly believe it was a hate crime," said Chuck Huser, the manager of float supplier Associated Attractions, who found and installed more than 100 replacement tires at short notice after a break-in at his warehouse in the 4800 block of South Halsted.... "We've been supplying floats for all the city parades for more than 30 years and this has never happened before — it’s a terrible crime against us and the gay community," he added.

INSIGHTS: Good Sex, Bad Sex
Writer Kit-Bacon Gressitt of Fallbrook reminds us a bit of reticent tolerance about sexual predilections of others may create tolerance for our own predilections.

CA Liberal Lynn Woolsey retiring from Congress
Lynn Woolsey made it official Monday--she's stepping down from Congress, after almost two decades of cutting-edge activism on behalf of peace and humanity. She will be missed, because she never wavered in the fight for a more fair and peaceful nation. The good news: Norman Solomon is running for her seat. He is an author, anti-nuclear activist, and an antiwar grassroots organizer for his entire life. Norman serves as Co-Chair of the "Healthcare NOT Warfare" campaign.

AZ liberals launch recall of T-party legislator
When Citizens for a Better Arizona set out to recall Senate President Russell Pearce on January 31, 2011, very few organizations cared to get involved. Most viewed our efforts as a symbolic gesture with no real chance of success. After 120 days of knocking on doors, talking to voters, collecting signatures and mobilizing hundreds of volunteers to take on the work of recalling the most powerful politician in Arizona, we surpassed the number of valid signatures needed to recall Senate President Russell Pearce.

A Few Simple Steps to Reduce Prison Populations
An Open Letter to Jerry Brown - Representing parolees over the last 7 years has given me a few ideas for keeping some people out of state prison. Here are some suggestions: By Marc Gardner, a defense lawyer in the Bay Area.

Legal Challenge to Melrose Dr Extension Filed
Following is the official press release from Preserve Calavera regarding the filing of a legal challenge to the Melrose Extension Project. "In our ten years we have not seen any other project that caused so much permanent damage to the natural and historic resources of North County, provided so little benefit, and wasted so much taxpayer money," said Diane Nygaard, President of Preserve Calavera. Preserve Calavera is not alone in raising concerns about the project.

Crucial election in Wisconsin in five weeks
Exactly five weeks from today, Wisconsin voters will finally have a chance to stop Scott Walker and the Republican war on working families dead in its tracks. Ted Olson Interview With Fox News Chris Wallace

Wallace, insinuating that Gay Marriage is judicial activism, asks where is it in the Constitution that permits gay mariage. "Where is the right to interracial marriage in the Constitution" asked Ted Olsen of Wallace. Brilliant arguments by Olson. When Wallace insists the voters have the right to outlaw gay marriage, Olson asks if it would be constitutional for the voters to force blacks to drink at separate water fountains.

Student contest aims to exalt bin Laden
After wasting over $1 trillion on the war in Afghanistan, the U.S. has definitely failed to win the hearts and minds of Pakistani students. "Two months after the covert U.S. raid that killed Osama bin Laden, posters emblazoned with images of the burning World Trade Center towers appeared at the country's largest university advertising a literary contest to glorify the slain al-Qaeda chief. The poem and essay competition at the prestigious Punjab University shows the footholds of hard-line Islamists on college campuses and growing efforts to raise their profile and influence even in the relatively cosmopolitan atmosphere of Pakistan's culture capital, Lahore." Plastic in more than 9% of fish in No. Pacific
Scripps scientists find plastic in 9.2% of lanternfish collected. The small fish are commonly eaten by larger species, and the plastic could end up in the food chain. The study published this week by scientists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego estimated that fish in the middle depths of the northern Pacific Ocean are ingesting as much as 24,000 tons of plastic each year. Hiroshima: A criminal act on epic scale

65 years ago - Historic Ignomy

The US dropped the first atomic bomb on August 6, 1945 in Hiroshima. The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a criminal act on an epic scale. It was premeditated mass murder that unleashed a weapon of intrinsic criminality. For this reason its apologists have sought refuge in the mythology of the ultimate "good war", whose "ethical bath", as Richard Drayton called it, has allowed the west not only to expiate its bloody imperial past but to promote 60 years of rapacious war, always beneath the shadow of The Bomb.
