This 'N ThatWhat all men fear, I too must fear - how barren and pointless a thought! - Tao Te ChingAll social life is essentially practical. All mysterious which lead theory to mysticism find their rational solution in human practice and in the comprehension of the practice. - Karl Marx I'd like someone to mention the day that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to give his life serving others. I'd like somebody to say that day, that Martin Luther King tried to love somebody. I want you to say that day, that I tried to be right on the war question. I want you to be able to say that day, that I did try to feed the hungry . . . I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity. Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice; say that I was a drum major for peace; I was a drum major for righteousness . . . I want to leave a committed life behind. - Martin Luther King, Jr. A large group of us were crowded into the Gestapo hall, and at that moment the circumstances of all our lives were the same. All of us occupied the same space, the men behind the desk no less than those about to be questioned. What distinguished each of us was only our inner attitude. - Etty Hillesum (concentration camp victim) The Bible has a very meaningful expression: The Spirit makes all things new. We are those who grow old, and we want everything done to our aged standards. The Spirit is never old; the Spirit is always young. - Oscar Romero Our friends show us what we can do; our enemies teach us what we must do. - Goethe Respectful dialogue, in the interest of searching for more complete truth, is considerably more productive than arguing for the purity of position. - Gerard Vanderhaar At all the times you can, - To all the people you can, The world cannot continue to wage war like physical giants and to seek peace like intellectual pygmies - Basil O'Connor God grant me the courage to change the things I can, the patience to accept the things I can't, and the wisdom to know the difference. - The Serenity Prayer Bless your persecutors; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Have the same attitude toward all. Put away ambitious thoughts and associate with those who are lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Never repay injury with injury. See that your conduct is honorable in the eyes of all. If possible, live peacefully with everyone. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves; leave that to God's wrath, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine; I will repay," says the Lord. But "If your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; by doing this you will heap burning coals upon their heads." Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good. - Romans 12:14-21 A merely fallen enemy may rise again, but the reconciled one is truly vanquished. - Johann Christoph Schiller Then it was as if I suddenly saw the secret beauty of their hearts, the depths of their hearts where neither sin nor desire nor self-knowledge can reach, the core of their reality, the person that each one is in God's eyes. If only they could see themselves as they really are. If only we could see each other that way all the time, there would be no more war, no more hatred, no more cruelty, no more greed . . . I suppose the big problem would be that we would fall down and worship each other. - Thomas Merton |

Where Netanyahu fails himself and Israel Article By Fahreed Zakaria - Conventional wisdom is fast congealing in Washington that President Obama was wrong to demarcate a shift in American policy toward Israel last week. In fact, it was Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu who broke with the past — in one of a series of diversions and obstacles Netanyahu has come up with anytime he is pressed. He wins in the short run, but ultimately, he is turning himself into a version of Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko, "Mr. Nyet," a man who will be bypassed by history. Why all the super tornado activity? Article Is there any link between the massive floods in Australia and Pakistan, the drought in China, and the fires in Texas; and the monster tornadoes in the US? By Bill McKibben Tennessee law: Can't say 'gay' in TN schools.
A pending law in the Tennessee legislature would prohibit teachers from discussing homosexuality in the classroom, the so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill. So Star Trek actor George Takei is helpfully offering Tennesseans who might feel constricted by such a law to use his name instead. "Any time you need to say the word 'gay,' you can just say the word 'Takei,'"” he says. For example, you could just say "Takei marriage." You can march in a "Takei pride parade." "Even homophobic slurs don't seem as hurtful if someone says 'that is so Takei'", says George.

Hiroshima: A criminal act on epic scale Article
65 years ago - Historic Ignomy The US dropped the first atomic bomb on August 6, 1945 in Hiroshima.
The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a criminal act on an epic scale. It was premeditated mass murder that unleashed a weapon of intrinsic criminality. For this reason its apologists have sought refuge in the mythology of the ultimate "good war", whose "ethical bath", as Richard Drayton called it, has allowed the west not only to expiate its bloody imperial past but to promote 60 years of rapacious war, always beneath the shadow of The Bomb. By John Pilger Arlington West - Memorial to our dead soldiers
