This 'N ThatIn all the ways you can, - In all the places you can,If peace . . . only had the music and pageantry of war, there'd be no wars. - Sophie Kerr You can't lead anyone else further than you have gone yourself. - Gene Mauch A good end sanctify evil means; not must we ever do evil, that good might come of it. We are ready to retaliate, rather than forgive or gain by love and information . . . Force may subdue, but love gains. And one that forgives first wins the laurel. - William Penn We can’t become nonviolent on the basis of intellectual conviction. Commitment to nonviolence demands a very profound conversion of mind and heart. If we take the time to pray with Jesus, we too will be converted in mind and heart. It won’t work if we try to reason it out. The only way is through a change of heart, a coming into a way of being that is the way of Jesus. - Bishop Thomas Gumbleton Nobody was born nonviolent. No one was born charitable. None of us comes to these things by nature but only by conversion. The first duty of the nonviolent community is helping its members work upon themselves and come to conversion. - Lanza del Vasto When someone steals another's clothes, we call them a thief. Should we not give the same name to one who could clothe the naked and does not? The bread in your cupboard belongs to the hungry; the coat unused in your closet belongs to the one who needs it; the shoes rotting in your closet belong to the one who has no shoes; the money which you hoard up belongs to the poor. - Basil the Great Truly you have formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother's womb. I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made; wonderful are your works. - Psalm 13:9 Only in the last moment in history has the delusion arisen that people can flourish apart from the rest of the living world. - E.O. Wilson The first principle of non-violent action is that of non-cooperation with everything humiliating. - Cesar Chavez When asked what he would do if he knew the world would end tomorrow, Martin Luther said, "I would plant a tree." - Martin Luther At all the times you can, - To all the people you can, Peace is not the product of a victory or a command. It has no finishing line, no final deadline, no fixed definition of achievement. Peace is a never-ending process, the work of many decisions. - Oscar Arias Five enemies of peace inhabit with us--avarice, ambition, envy, anger, and pride; if these were to be banished, we should infallibly enjoy perpetual peace. - Petrarch Nothing is so strong as gentleness; nothing so gentle as real strength. - St. Francis de Sales While you are proclaiming peace with your lips, be careful to have it even more fully in your heart. - St. Francis of Assisi The fragrance always remains in the hand that gives the rose. - Heda Bejar The means by which we live have outdistanced the ends for which we live. Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men. - Martin Luther King Do it big or stay in bed. - Larry Kelly The wolf shall also dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. - Isaiah 11:6 The longer we listen to one another - with real attention - the more commonality we will find in all our lives. That is, if we are careful to exchange with one another life stories and not simply opinions. - Barbara Deming The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens. - Baha'ullah You can no more win a war than win an earthquake. - Jeanette Rankin . . . [T]o live not with hands clenched to grasp, to strike, to hold tight to a life that is always slipping away the more tightly we hold it, but . . . to live with the hands stretched out both to give and receive with gladness. - (Carl) Frederick Buechner When a true genius appears in this world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him. - Jonathan Swift Poetry is an act of peace. Peace goes into the making of a poet as flour goes into the making of bread. - Pablo Neruda, Memoirs (Confieso Que He Vivido: Memorias) (1974) True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power. Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it. - Milan Kundera |
