It's based on the idea of an independent self. But, in fact, there's no such thing. There's no self without other people. There's no self without sunlight. There's no self without dew. And water. And bees to pollinate the food we eat....So the idea of behaving in a way that doesn't acknowledge those reciprocal relationships is not really freedom, it's indulgence. In the absence of justice, what is sovereignty but organized robbery? Your life and my life flow into each other as wave flows into wave, and unless there is peace and joy and freedom for you, there can be no real peace or joy or freedom for me. To see reality--not as we expect it to be but as it is--is to see that unless we live for each other and in and through each other, we do not really live very satisfactorily; that there can really be life only where there really is, in just this sense, love. War is as outmoded as cannibalism, chattel slavery, blood-feuds, and dueling, an insult to God and humanity...a daily crucifixion of Christ. Forge thy tongue on an anvil of truth and what flies up, though it be but a spark, will have light. In April, we cannot see sunflowers in France, so we might say the sunflowers do not exist. But the local farmers have already planted thousands of seeds, and when they look at the bare hills, they may be able to see the sunflowers already. The sunflowers are there. They lack only the conditions of sun, heat, rain and July. Just because we cannot see them does not mean that they do not exist. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. One day we shall win freedom, but not only for ourselves. We shall so appeal to your heart and conscience that we shall win you in the process, and our victory will be a double victory. I believe we are on the edge of a quantum leap into a whole new way of organizing and living as a human family. Nonviolence doesn't always work -- but violence never does. We used to wonder where war lived, what it was that made it so vile. And now we realize that we know where it lives, that it is inside ourselves. Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak. Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen. I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant. I believe in compulsory cannibalism. If people were forced to eat what they killed there would be no more war. Is it progress if a cannibal uses a knife and fork? The direct use of force is such a poor solution to any problem, it is generally employed only by small children and large nations. It is reasonable that every one who asks justice should do justice. There is a certain kind of peace that is not merely the absence of war. It is larger than that. The peace I am thinking of is not at the mercy of history's rule, nor is it a passive surrender to the status quo. The peace I am thinking of is the dance of an open mind when it engages another equally open one -- an activity that occurs most naturally, most often in the reading/writing world we live in. Accessible as it is, this particular kind of peace warrants vigilance. A great many people think they are thinking when they are just rearranging their prejudices. The wolf shall also dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life. Angry heart -- you have no chance against my prayers. War stirs in men's hearts the mud of their worst instincts. It puts a premium on violence, nourishes hatred, and gives free rein to cupidity. It crushes the weak, exalts the unworthy, and bolsters tyranny .. .Time and time again it has destroyed all ordered living, devastated hope, and put the prophets to death. By logic and reason we die hourly. By imagination we live. If I can't dance I don't want to be part of your revolution. Abba Poeman said about Abba Prior that every single day he made a fresh beginning. The only thing that's been a worse flop than the organization of nonviolence has been the organization of violence. When asked what he would do if he knew the world would end tomorrow, Martin Luther said, "I would plant a tree." All violence consists in some people forcing others, under threat of suffering or death, to do what the do not want to do. We do not inherit the earth from our fathers. We borrow it from our children. Instead of tug o' war, let's play hug o' war. Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him. Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups. There have been periods of history in which episodes of terrible violence occurred but for which the word violence was never used...Violence is shrouded in justifying myths that lend it moral legitimacy, and these myths for the most part kept people from recognizing the violence for what it was. The people who burned witches at the stake never for one moment thought of their act as violence; rather they though of it as an act of divinely mandated righteousness. The same can be said of most of the violence we humans have ever committed. The first question which the priest and the Levite asked [on the Jericho Road] was: ‘If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?' But...the good Samaritan reversed the question: ‘If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?' To fight and conquer in all our battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting. All works of love are works of peace. Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. Pfc. Bradley Manning is in his seventh month of severe isolation at Quantico Marine Base. When Bradley’s friend David House tried to visit Quantico this weekend, he was detained for more than two hours without explanation and prevented from visiting Bradley. Army intel analyst Bradley Manning faces decades in prison for allegedly leaking this video of a U.S. helicopter attack killing 11 civilians and wounding two children in Baghdad, Iraq. The Army covered up the evidence and declared the war crime "justified". Now they say that exposing the massacre is criminal.

Michelle Bachman: Ignorant of American history

In her rebuttal to Pres. Obama's State of the Union Speech, Michele Bachmann displayed her ignorance of basic American history, when she said the United States was founded on racial and ethnic diversity and that the founding fathers were responsible for abolishing slavery. "But we also know that the very founders that wrote those documents worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States," Bachmann added, claiming "men like John Quincy Adams... would not rest until slavery was extinguished in the country." Mayor Bloomberg sends sting team to AZ gun show

In the wake of last month's Arizona shootings, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg sent a group of undercover officers to the Crossroads of the West Gun Show in Phoenix, where they secretly shot video showing how easy it was to buy powerful semiautomatic weapons. In one memorable exchange, a seller assures an undercover officer that no background check is needed and the officer replies, "That’s good, because I probably couldn’t pass one, you know what I mean?" Despite those hints at a troubled background, the seller parts with a $500 Sig Sauer pistol.

Video caught the whole thing. Lauren was left with a concussion.

One of the worst war crimes ever committed by the United States was the My Lai Massacre in Vietnam, 43 years ago. From that day came a monster villain, Lt. William Calley, and a noble hero, Hugh Thompson, who stopped the mass killing. Thompson is hero to many vets. The San Diego Veterans for Peace named their chapter after him. By Chuck Palazzo

Wallace, insinuating that Gay Marriage is judicial activism, asks where is it in the Constitution that permits gay mariage. "Where is the right to interracial marriage in the Constitution" asked Ted Olsen of Wallace. Brilliant arguments by Olson. When Wallace insists the voters have the right to outlaw gay marriage, Olson asks if it would be constitutional for the voters to force blacks to drink at separate water fountains.
