This 'N ThatPeace is not an absence of war, it is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, justice. - Baruch SpinozaThe idea of absolute freedom is fiction. It's based on the idea of an independent self. But, in fact, there's no such thing. There's no self without other people. There's no self without sunlight. There's no self without dew. And water. And bees to pollinate the food we eat....So the idea of behaving in a way that doesn't acknowledge those reciprocal relationships is not really freedom, it's indulgence. - Peter Coyote In the absence of justice, what is sovereignty but organized robbery? - St. Augustine Your life and my life flow into each other as wave flows into wave, and unless there is peace and joy and freedom for you, there can be no real peace or joy or freedom for me. To see reality--not as we expect it to be but as it is--is to see that unless we live for each other and in and through each other, we do not really live very satisfactorily; that there can really be life only where there really is, in just this sense, love. - (Carl) Frederick Buechner War is as outmoded as cannibalism, chattel slavery, blood-feuds, and dueling, an insult to God and humanity...a daily crucifixion of Christ. - Muriel Lester Forge thy tongue on an anvil of truth and what flies up, though it be but a spark, will have light. - Pindar In April, we cannot see sunflowers in France, so we might say the sunflowers do not exist. But the local farmers have already planted thousands of seeds, and when they look at the bare hills, they may be able to see the sunflowers already. The sunflowers are there. They lack only the conditions of sun, heat, rain and July. Just because we cannot see them does not mean that they do not exist. - Thich Nhat Hanh Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. - Martin Luther King, Jr. One day we shall win freedom, but not only for ourselves. We shall so appeal to your heart and conscience that we shall win you in the process, and our victory will be a double victory. - Martin Luther King I believe we are on the edge of a quantum leap into a whole new way of organizing and living as a human family. - Mairead Corrigan Maguire Nonviolence doesn't always work -- but violence never does. - Madge Michaels-Cyrus We used to wonder where war lived, what it was that made it so vile. And now we realize that we know where it lives, that it is inside ourselves. - Albert Camus Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak. Courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen. - Winston Churchill I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant. - Martin Luther King, Jr. I believe in compulsory cannibalism. If people were forced to eat what they killed there would be no more war. - Abbie Hoffman Is it progress if a cannibal uses a knife and fork? - Stanislaw Lem The direct use of force is such a poor solution to any problem, it is generally employed only by small children and large nations. - David Friedman It is reasonable that every one who asks justice should do justice. - Thomas Jefferson There is a certain kind of peace that is not merely the absence of war. It is larger than that. The peace I am thinking of is not at the mercy of history's rule, nor is it a passive surrender to the status quo. The peace I am thinking of is the dance of an open mind when it engages another equally open one -- an activity that occurs most naturally, most often in the reading/writing world we live in. Accessible as it is, this particular kind of peace warrants vigilance. - Toni Morrison, The Dancing Mind (1996) A great many people think they are thinking when they are just rearranging their prejudices. - William James The wolf shall also dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. - Isaiah 11:6 The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life. - Jane Addams Angry heart -- you have no chance against my prayers. - Mary Moreno War stirs in men's hearts the mud of their worst instincts. It puts a premium on violence, nourishes hatred, and gives free rein to cupidity. It crushes the weak, exalts the unworthy, and bolsters tyranny .. .Time and time again it has destroyed all ordered living, devastated hope, and put the prophets to death. - Charles DeGaulle By logic and reason we die hourly. By imagination we live. - John Butler Yeats If I can't dance I don't want to be part of your revolution. - Emma Goldman Abba Poeman said about Abba Prior that every single day he made a fresh beginning. - Desert Fathers and Mothers The only thing that's been a worse flop than the organization of nonviolence has been the organization of violence. - Joan Baez When asked what he would do if he knew the world would end tomorrow, Martin Luther said, "I would plant a tree." - Martin Luther All violence consists in some people forcing others, under threat of suffering or death, to do what the do not want to do. - Leo Tolstoy We do not inherit the earth from our fathers. We borrow it from our children. - David Bower Instead of tug o' war, let's play hug o' war. - Shel Silverstein Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him. - Martin Luther King, Jr. Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups. - John Kenneth Galbraith There have been periods of history in which episodes of terrible violence occurred but for which the word violence was never used...Violence is shrouded in justifying myths that lend it moral legitimacy, and these myths for the most part kept people from recognizing the violence for what it was. The people who burned witches at the stake never for one moment thought of their act as violence; rather they though of it as an act of divinely mandated righteousness. The same can be said of most of the violence we humans have ever committed. - Gil Bailie The first question which the priest and the Levite asked [on the Jericho Road] was: ‘If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?' But...the good Samaritan reversed the question: ‘If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?' - Martin Luther King To fight and conquer in all our battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting. - Sun Tzu All works of love are works of peace. - Mother Teresa Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction. - E. F. Schumacher |
