VIOLENT images creates violent reality

INSIGHTS by Joe Howard Crews - Jan. 17, 2011

Only one side advocates armed revolution against our government as its guiding spirit. Only one side consistently invokes the "Second Amendment solutions" as a form of intimidation against the other. Only one side employed "open-carry" of guns to town hall meetings in San Diego held by Susan Davis and only one side physically assaulted Bob Filner. Only one side has a popular TV host who uses his platform to indoctrinate the public with the lies that the President is an alien, a dangerous socialist seeking to undermine America. Read More

NVA Presents Eve Selis Returns
Saturday, 02/12/2011
New Village Arts Presents Eve Selis Returns on Feb. 12. "The Eve Selis Band erupted in an acute explosion of Americana, wailing and twanging and thundering and throbbing, conjuring demons and angels alike. Damn, that woman can sing!” —Buddy Blue, Blue Notes, December 8, 2005."Selis rocks me. Eve, you are a star.” —Chris Isaak

This 'N That

I stand at the altar of murdered men, and, while I live, I fight their cause.
- Florence Nightingale, 1856

We have grasped the mystery of the atom and rejected the Sermon on the Mount. Ours is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants. We know more about war than we know about peace, more about killing that we know about living.
- General Omar Bradley

What good is it to me that Mary gave birth to the son of God fourteen hundred years ago, and I do not also give birth to the Son of God in my time and in my culture? We are all meant to be mothers of God. God is always needing to be born.
- Meister Eckhart

In History, stagnant waters, whether they be the stagnant waters of custom or those of despotism, harbour no life; life is dependent on the ripples created by a few eccentric individuals. In homage to that life & vitality, the community has to brave certain perils and must countenance a measure of heresy. One must live dangerously if one wants to live at all.
- Herbert Read

Violence in the voice is often only the death rattle of reason in the throat.
- John Boyes

Do you want long life and happiness? Strive for peace with all your heart.
- Psalm 34:12,14

Peace is an environment where conflicts are resolved without violence, where people are free, not exploited, living so they can grow to their full potential.
- Gerard Vanderhaar

The cause of violence is not ignorance. It is self-interest. ... Only reverence can restrain violence - reverence for human life and the environment .
- Rev. William Sloan Coffin, Jr.

Your life and my life flow into each other as wave flows into wave, and unless there is peace and joy and freedom for you, there can be no real peace or joy or freedom for me. To see reality--not as we expect it to be but as it is--is to see that unless we live for each other and in and through each other, we do not really live very satisfactorily; that there can really be life only where there really is, in just this sense, love.
- (Carl) Frederick Buechner

By logic and reason we die hourly. By imagination we live.
- John Butler Yeats

What a cruel thing is war: to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joys and happiness God has granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors, and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world.
- Robert E. Lee, in a letter to his wife, 1864

What good is a house, if you haven't got a decent planet to put it on?
- Henry David Thoreau

The Bible has a very meaningful expression: The Spirit makes all things new. We are those who grow old, and we want everything done to our aged standards. The Spirit is never old; the Spirit is always young.
- Oscar Romero

The love of one's country is a splendid thing. But why should love stop at the border?
- Pablo Casals

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness, that must frighten us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, Courageous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. You playing small does not help the world. There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And when we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. When we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
- Nelson Mandela

Whenever you are in doubt or when the self becomes too much with you, try the following experiment: Recall the face of the poorest and most helpless person you have ever seen and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be for any use to him or to her . . . Then you will find your doubts and your self melting away.
- Mohandas Gandhi

Much violence is based on the illusion that life is a property to be defended and not to be shared.
- Henri Nouwen

It is easier to fight for one's principles than to live up to them.
- Alfred Adler

Nothing could be worse than the fear that one had given up too soon, and left one unexpended effort that might have saved the world.
- Jane Addams

I have great belief in the fact that whenever there is chaos, it creates wonderful thinking. I consider chaos a gift.
- Septima Poinsette Clark

There is nothing more agreeable in life than to make peace with the establishment and nothing more corrupting.
- Unknown

Women prevent the threads of life from being broken. The finest minds have always understood the peacemaking role of women.
- Mikhail Gorbachev

And all good things are yours.
- Swedish proverb

The world will not be inherited by the strongest, it will be inherited by those most able to change
- Charles Darwin

If we just worry about the big picture, we are powerless. So my secret is to start right away doing whatever little work I can do. I try to give joy to one person in the morning, and remove the suffering of one person in the afternoon. If you and your friends do not despise the small work, a million people will remove a lot of suffering. That is the secret. Start right now.
- Sister Chän Khöng

The Rich are eviscerating the middle class
Article
"Countries with wide income inequality don't lead the world in research, technology, industry, and innovation. They're unstable. They have large underclasses. They have high rates of crime. They have little opportunity. In such countries the rich have disproportionate power. They take control of all aspects of society, especially government, the police, and the judiciary." The vast potential of the masses is suppressed and the nation grows weaker. By Larry Beinhart, AlterNet.org

GI Resistance to US War Crimes in Iraq
Article
"The US-led invasion and occupation of Iraq could not have more clearly violated international law. Even the former secretary general of the United Nations (UN), Kofi Annan, said in September 2004 that the Iraq war was illegal and breached the UN Charter. An illegal war is thus the mother of all war crimes, for from that stems all the rest... When someone becomes a soldier, they swear an oath to support and defend the US Constitution by following "lawful" orders. Thus, they are legally obliged by their own oath to not follow unlawful orders. What Manning did by leaking this critical information has been to uphold his oath as a soldier in the most patriotic way." By Dahr Jamal, American journalist.

T-Party members wore guns to Washington rally
Article
Lest we forget, this is a reminder that the Tea Party last April showed up wearing loaded weapons at a gun rally on the Potomoc, making history as the first people to take their guns in a national park. Loaded pistols, open carried in a public gathering. "What I think is important to note is that many of the speakers have really threatened violence, and it's a real threat to the rule of law," Josh Horwitz, executive director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, said of the program for the armed rally. "They are calling health care and taxes that have been duly enacted by a democratically elected Congress tyrannical, and they feel they have a right to confront that individually."

When I bought my Blackberry I thought about the 30-year business I ran with 1800 employees, all without a cell phone that plays music, takes videos, pictures and communicates with Facebook and Twitter. I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, 13 grandkids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space. Little did I know!

King, 'Why I Am Opposed to the War in Vietnam'

Martin Luther King's most controversial speech, which won him the enmity of the FBI, CIA and the military industrial complex. April 30, 1967. Back then Life magazine called it "demagogic slander that sounded like a script for Radio Hanoi." The Washington Post patronized that "King has diminished his usefulness to his cause, his country, his people." If Martin Luther King were alive today, O'Reilly would call him a "co-conspirator with Julian Assange". Beck would call him a "social justice junkie" and a "socialist" with "anti-American" views. Hannity would accuse him of having "sympathy for the enemy" and Limbaugh would say "this man is a racist who is using the acts of a few to condemn the entire white race". We celebrate his birthday Monday, Jan. 17.

"The detente between the gay-rights community and the Obama administration after the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" was always bound to end, as that one major legislative victory gave way to tougher debates over marriage and workplace discrimination, but it's nonetheless a bit surprising how quickly the two camps have resumed sparring." ISSA: 'Obama one of most corrupt Presidents'

Rep. Darrell Issa, who is set to take over the chairmanship of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, stated that Pres. Obama is one of the most corrupt presidents of modern history. Issa wants hundreds of interrogations. Issa has made no secret of his love of hearings. He wants hundreds of them – one or two a week, times seven subcommittees, times 40 weeks, he told Politico. That’s at least 280 hearings a year. Here comes the cleverest king of muckraking.

Giffords warned Sarah Palin of consequences

Sarah Palin is on the defensive at this moment because of her decision to make Giffords, who remains in critical condition after being shot in the head, one of 20 Democrats marked for defeat in the 2010 midterm elections. Palin set up a Web site called "Take Back the 20," which included a map of the United States with cross hairs on congressional districts of Democratic candidates she had singled out for defeat. The map drew immediate criticism. Among those who voiced disapproval was Giffords. "We're on Sarah Palin's targeted list, but the thing is that the way she has it depicted has the cross hairs of a gun sight over our district," Giffords told MSNBC at the time. "When people do that, they've got to realize there's consequences to that action."

Ted Olson Interview With Fox News Chris Wallace

Wallace, insinuating that Gay Marriage is judicial activism, asks where is it in the Constitution that permits gay mariage. "Where is the right to interracial marriage in the Constitution" asked Ted Olsen of Wallace. Brilliant arguments by Olson. When Wallace insists the voters have the right to outlaw gay marriage, Olson asks if it would be constitutional for the voters to force blacks to drink at separate water fountains.

News
The Twin Cities activists who had their homes raided by the FBI last September are starting to learn more about why they're being investigated by a Chicago grand jury in relation to material support of terrorism. Last fall the Justice Department's Inspector General released a scathing report that criticized the FBI for invoking anti-terrorist laws to justify their investigations and harassment of groups including Greenpeace, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and the Catholic Worker.
