Americans must pull together in hard times
INSIGHTS - by Joe Howard Crews - President Obama is not seeking a compromise with the Republicans on tax cuts. He is actively pursuing a course of capitulation to the Republican greed machine. He is willing to trade $18 billion in jobless benefits (desperately needed) in exchange for $3.8 TRILLION debt to extend the Bush tax cuts, an amount 211 times greater. Yet the Republican noise machine screams about the national deficit. Shameful hypocrisy. Read More

Why WikiLeaks Is Good for America
by Evan Hansen - Editor-in-Chief of Wired.com "A truly free press ó one unfettered by concerns of nationalism -- is apparently a terrifying problem for elected governments and tyrannies alike. It shouldnít be... The greatest threat we face right now from Wikileaks is not the information it has spilled and may spill in the future, but the reactionary response to it thatís building in the United States that promises to repudiate the rule of law and our free speech traditions, if left unchecked." Christmas demonstration against war, in Washington
Thursday, 12/16/2010
A great coalition of peace activist will converge on Washington, D.C., on Dec. 16 at the White House. Veterans and others will stage what will be the largest veteran-led civil resistance to U.S. wars in recent history. By showing scores of U.S. veterans being literally dragged away from the White House as they demand peace, we expose the hypocrisy of a government that is waging (and promoting) worldwide, endless warfare during a season when we celebrate "Peace on Earth." We will vividly demonstrate that serious civil resistance is alive and well in the United States.

This 'N That

Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And when you look into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you.
- Friedrich Nietzche

We are convinced that non-violence is more powerful than violence. We are convinced that non-violence supports you if you have a just and moral cause...If you use violence, you have to sell part of yourself for that violence. Then you are no longer a master of your own struggle.
- Cesar Chavez

It is reasonable that every one who asks justice should do justice.
- Thomas Jefferson

There is no trust more sacred than the one the world holds with children. There is no duty more important than ensuring that their rights are respected, that their welfare is protected, that their lives are free from fear and want and that they grow up in peace.
- Kofi A. Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations

Those who are ready to sacrifice freedom for security ultimately will lose both.

Until lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunters.

Angels can fly because they take themselves so lightly.

The pacifist's task today is to find a method of helping and healing which provides a revolutionary constructive substitute for war.
- Vera Brittain, 1964

When you're finally up on the moon, looking back at the earth, all these differences and nationalistic traits are pretty well going to blend and you're going to get a concept that maybe this is really one world and why the hell can't we learn to live together like decent people?
- Frank Borman

There will one day spring from the brain of science a machine or force so fearful in its potentialities, so absolutely terrifying, that even man, the fighter, who will dare torture and death in order to inflict torture and death, will be appalled, and so abandon war forever.
- Thomas Edison

War is as outmoded as cannibalism, chattel slavery, blood-feuds, and dueling, an insult to God and humanity...a daily crucifixion of Christ.
- Muriel Lester

The wolf shall also dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.

- Jacob Riis

No man is an island entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

The governors of the world believe, and have always believed, that virtue can only be taught by teaching falsehood, and that any man who knew the truth would be wicked. I disbelieve this, absolutely and entirely. I believe that love of truth is the basis of all real virtue, and that virtues based upon lies can only do harm.
- Bertrand Russell

Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.

Non-violence exacts a very high price from one who practices it. But once you are able to meet that demand then you can do most things.

Young people say, What is the sense of our small effort? They cannot see that we must lay one brick at at time, take one step at a time; we can be responsible only for the one action in the present moment. But we can beg for an increase of love in our hearts that will vitalize and transform all our individual actions, and know that God will take them and multiply them, as Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes.

Articles & News:

How to give minor parties a real voice in election
By Dr. Zoltan Lucas - of Oceanside. The two-party domination of national politics shuts out third party and independent voices. The method of "electoral fusion" can go a long way to correct this. Electoral fusion is an arrangement where two or more political parties on a ballot list the same candidate, pooling the votes for that candidate. Fusion voting was initially widely used in the United States, but as minor political parties became increasingly adept at pushing their policies by using this method, most state legislatures in the late 19th and early 20th centuries banned its use.

Trial seems to be leaning toward gay marriage
The federal appeals court on Monday (Dec. 6) appeared generally inclined to support the right of same-sex couples to marry in California. But how the judges reach that historic conclusion remains unpredictable. Judge Smith repeatedly challenged the anti-gay marriage attorney, appearing particularly troubled by the fact that California has broad protections for same-sex couples under its domestic partnership laws, yet forbids them to marry. "What is the rational basis then if homosexuals have all the rights heterosexual couples have?" Smith asked. "We're left with a word: marriage."

Let's Not make a Deal on Bush Tax Cuts
By Paul Krugman - "Democrats have tried to compromise: let tax cuts for the wealthy expire, but extend tax cuts for the middle class. Republicans, however, are having none of it. They have been filibustering Democratic attempts to separate tax cuts that mainly benefit a tiny group of wealthy Americans from those that mainly help the middle class. Itís all or nothing, they say: all the Bush tax cuts must be extended." So let's stand fast and make NO DEAL!.

Fail and still grow rich on Wall Street
By Robert Scheer - "Welcome to the brave new world of post-bailout capitalism. The Commerce Department announced Tuesday that corporate profits are at their highest level in U.S. history, and the Fed released minutes of an early November meeting in which officials predicted a stagnant economy and continued high unemployment." The banks have staged "The Quiet Coup," in which the financial industry is fully in charge of the government's response to our economic problems. The result ... is "the reemergence of an American financial oligarchy"

'When I Am Old, I Will Still Be a Feminist'
By Kit-Bacon Gressitt of Fallbrook - The mature age writer has to select a college major. She considers and eliminates one after the other. "This leaves me with one final option, and what a surprise it is see to it there at the bottom of the list of academic offerings: Womenís Studies! Who knew? I surely didnít. I figured Womenís Studies had gone the way of the dial telephone, mercury thermometers and women who proudly claimed the title feminist without contorting its definition to accommodate mama grizzly bears, patriarchal institutions and flirtatious stump speeches." GOP Senate roadblocks START missle treaty
The Republicans have gone from the "Party of Hell NO!" to the pure "Party of Hell", when one considers the dangers of nuclear weapons and the necessity of ratification of the New START treat on nuclear warheads. Republican Senators refuse to ratify this treaty with Russian, thus preventing the U.S. from pursing the "Trust but verify" principle. Read this article. This is far more important to the security and safety of our nation than tax cuts for the rich.

Daniel Ellsburg calls for boycott of Amazon.com
Daniel Ellsberg penned an open letter to Amazon.com, saying he's "disgusted" by Amazon taking WikiLeaks offline under the pretense of a violation of its terms of service. He said the company capitulated to absurd demands by Sen. Joe Lieberman and others who "aspire to Chinaís control of information and deterrence of whistle-blowing." "For the last several years, Iíve been spending over $100 a month on new and used books from Amazon. Thatís over. I ask Amazon to terminate immediately my membership in Amazon Prime and my Amazon credit card and account, to delete my contact and credit information from their files and to send me no more notices."

Democrats: A smaller but stronger army of liberals
In the minority, Democrats might be unable to pass legislation, but they can sharply define our movement outside Washington, sharply define choices for the American people and expose money grubbing conservatives who will use their newfound power to further corporate interests. A smaller, but more united and stronger army of liberals can force Obama back to the real principle of government for the people.

AIDS pill helps gay men avoid HIV infection
Scientists have an exciting breakthrough in the fight against AIDS. A pill already used to treat HIV infection turns out to be a powerful weapon in protecting healthy gay men from catching the virus, a global study found. But the drug is very expensive: American patients are charged up to $14,000 a year, but foreign patients are able to use generics costing only $.39 (39 cents) a day. This is why Medicare is going broke.

BILL MOYERS: Plutocracy destroying our democracy

"Plutocracy and Democracy don't mix", states Bill Moyers. It is the rule of the rich, which is anathema to democracy. It is buying up and enslaving the political and spiritual soul of America. It greatest threat is controlling the minds of the weak and vulnerable segment of the populace though media propaganda. It uses the sacred tools of democracy to destroy democracy from within.

FBI demands more spying authority on Americans
ACLU: The FBI is lobbying tech companies including Google and Facebook to win support for an Obama administration proposal to expand its Internet wiretapping capabilities. The ACLU remains very concerned that this proposal is a clear recipe for abuse and will make it that much easier for the government to gain access to our most personal information. Americans should not simply surrender their privacy and other fundamental values in the name of national security.

GOP may wind up killing the recovering patient
By Paul Krugman: "Our nation is in much worse shape, much closer to a political breakdown, than most people realize," wrote Paul Krugman, Nobel economics prize winner in his latest column. America is a weak patient coming out of intensive care, and the new Republicans in Congress can't wait to bludgeon America and draw blood." This may have tragic unintended consequences for the economy.

NY Times editorial: Power of the Hispanic Vote
"Democrats were hurt in the midterm election by low turnouts or faltering support from voters who were young, black or female. But overwhelming support from Hispanic voters appears to have helped elect Democratic senators in Nevada, California, Colorado and possibly Washington State. Hispanic voters may have kept the Senate in Democratic hands." And their power will continue to grow, bringing a new wave of moral consciousness to America.

The Next Crash Will Be Ecological, and
"...three facts. 2010 is globally the hottest year since records began. 2010 is the year humanity's emissions of planet-warming gases reached its highest level ever. And exactly as the climate scientists predicted, we are seeing a rapid increase in catastrophic weather events, from the choking of Moscow by gigantic unprecedented forest fires to the drowning of one quarter of Pakistan."

AFTERSHOCK: The Next Economy, Americaís Future
New Book Review: - "AFTERSHOCK": The Next Economy and America's Future" - by Robert Reich (Hardcover) AFTERSHOCK may well be the most important book written on the current economic crisis. It offers a critical insight seen in very few other places: The fundamental cause of our problems is the relentless drive toward income concentration. The problem with concentrating income into the hands of a few people is that you take money from millions of people who would spend nearly all of it, and give it to a tiny number of people who can't and won't spend it -- but will instead save it, gamble with it, or invest it offshore. The end result is simply too few viable consumers to drive the economy.

The Pentagon's wildly irrational spending binge.
"This year, the United States will spend at least $700 billion on defense and security. Adjusting for inflation, thatís more than America has spent on defense in any year since World War IIómore than during the Korean war, the Vietnam war, or the Reagan military buildup. Much of that enormous sum results from spending increases under presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Since 2001, military and security expenditures have soared by 119 percent." A couple for 44 years, still denied right to marry

Edith "Edie" Windsor, who shared her life with her late spouse, Thea Spyer, for 44 years, filed a lawsuit against the federal government for refusing to recognize their marriage. The lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of the "Defense of Marriage Act", a federal statute that defines marriage for all federal purposes as a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife. Windsor and Spyer were married in Canada in 2007 and were considered married by their home state of New York.

The world's 2nd richest man, investor Warren Buffet, explains how government saved the U.S. from a major Depression & that the rich should be paying a lot more in taxes.
