Whenever you are in doubt or when the self becomes too much with you, try the following experiment: Recall the face of the poorest and most helpless person you have ever seen and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be for any use to him or to her . . . Then you will find your doubts and your self melting away.

A large group of us were crowded into the Gestapo hall, and at that moment the circumstances of all our lives were the same. All of us occupied the same space, the men behind the desk no less than those about to be questioned. What distinguished each of us was only our inner attitude.
- Etty Hillesum (concentration camp victim)

The world will not be inherited by the strongest, it will be inherited by those most able to change
- Charles Darwin

We should take care, in inculcating patriotism into our boys and girls, that is a patriotism above the narrow sentiment which usually stops at one's country, and thus inspires jealousy and enmity in dealing with others... Our patriotism should be of the wider, nobler kind which recognises justice and reasonableness in the claims of others and which lead our country into comradeship with...the other nations of the world. The first step to this end is to develop peace and goodwill within our borders, by training our youth of both sexes to its practice as their habit of life, so that the jealousies of town against town, class against class and sect against sect no longer exist; and then to extend this good feeling beyond our frontiers towards our neighbours.
- Lord Baden-Powell

Observe good faith and justice toward all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all.

Victories in these two races are critical to winning the federal case against Prop. 8; both Brown and Harris have vowed not to appeal Judge Walker's historic ruling finding Prop. 8 unconstitutional.

Meg Whitman goes down in flaming shame
MEG WHITMAN: "It took a lifetime's work to lose that race. Sure, there was the tacky business with the housekeeper, and the money turned people off, combined with a grinding total lack of warmth, charm, wit or humility. But, in the end, it was probably over before it started. Probably the fact that she never voted was all we needed to know. As far as anyone can tell she never went to a PTA meeting, or signed a petition, or wrote a letter to the editor, or put her change in the plastic can for Ronald McDonald House. NOTHING!"

Tea Party in Britain implements shocking program
The Tea Party's Wildest Dreams Come True -- in Britain. The Result? Disaster Awaits. "The government of David Cameron just took the Tea Party's deepest fantasies -- of massive budget cuts, introduced immediately -- and imposed them on Britain. When was the last time Britain's public spending was slashed by more than 20 percent? Not in my mother's lifetime. Not even in my grandmother's lifetime. No: It was in 1918."

Late breaking news that did not reach our deadline:

Tax cuts where? The proof is in the pudding ...

... but the Republicans have no pudding. The TEA party people clamor incessantly for spending cuts, but no one can ever get a Republican politician to name even one specific program whatsoever that they would cut. They can't name them because their voters would freak out if they knew. Here, let me name a few for them: Social security, medicare, education, welfare. Basically any social programs that help the poor and middle class or working people of America.
