We used to wonder where war lived, what it was that made it so vile. And now we realize that we know where it lives, that it is inside ourselves. Whenever you are in doubt or when the self becomes too much with you, try the following experiment: Recall the face of the poorest and most helpless person you have ever seen and ask yourself if the step you contemplate is going to be for any use to him or to her . . . Then you will find your doubts and your self melting away. Being a pacifist between wars is as easy as being a vegetarian between meals. If you see good in people, you radiate a harmonious loving energy which uplifts those who are around you. If you can maintain this habit, this energy will turn into a steady flow of love. The non-violent technique does not depend for its success on the goodwill of the oppressor, but rather on the unfailing assistance of God. A good end sanctify evil means; not must we ever do evil, that good might come of it. We are ready to retaliate, rather than forgive or gain by love and information . . . Force may subdue, but love gains. And one that forgives first wins the laurel. In a time of universal deceit - telling the truth is a revolutionary act. A great many people think they are thinking when they are just rearranging their prejudices. But the wisdom from above is pure, first of all; it is also peaceful, gentle and friendly; it is full of compassion and produces a harvest of good deals,; it is free from prejudice and hypocrisy. The pens which write against disarmament are made with the same steel from which guns are made. You know, if people are not pacifists, it's not their fault. It's because society puts them in that spot. You've got to change it. You don't just change a man - you've got to change his environment as you do it. Do it big or stay in bed. I dream of giving birth to a child who will ask: "Mother, what was war?" If we do not change our direction we are likely to end up where we are headed for. Plans to protect air and water, wilderness and wildlife are in fact plans to protect man. War is as outmoded as cannibalism, chattel slavery, blood-feuds, and dueling, an insult to God and humanity...a daily crucifixion of Christ. Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups. What is man? For it isn't enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn't enough to believe in it. One must work at it. The first principle of non-violent action is that of non-cooperation with everything humiliating. When I have money, I get rid of it quickly, lest it find a way into my heart. If you obey all the rules you will miss the fun. If you live alone, whose feet will you wash? To save one life, it is as if you had saved the world. If we work in marble, it will perish; if we work upon brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will crumble into dust; but if we work upon immortal minds and instill into them just principles, we are then engraving upon tablets which no time will efface, but will brighten and brighten to all eternity. We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace. A large group of us were crowded into the Gestapo hall, and at that moment the circumstances of all our lives were the same. All of us occupied the same space, the men behind the desk no less than those about to be questioned. What distinguished each of us was only our inner attitude. The world will not be inherited by the strongest, it will be inherited by those most able to change We should take care, in inculcating patriotism into our boys and girls, that is a patriotism above the narrow sentiment which usually stops at one's country, and thus inspires jealousy and enmity in dealing with others... Our patriotism should be of the wider, nobler kind which recognises justice and reasonableness in the claims of others and which lead our country into comradeship with...the other nations of the world. The first step to this end is to develop peace and goodwill within our borders, by training our youth of both sexes to its practice as their habit of life, so that the jealousies of town against town, class against class and sect against sect no longer exist; and then to extend this good feeling beyond our frontiers towards our neighbours. Observe good faith and justice toward all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all. You can't separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom. In the twilight of life, God will not judge us on our earthly possessions and human success, but rather on how much we have loved. Peace is the work of justice indirectly, in so far as justice removes the obstacles to peace; but it is the work of charity (love) directly, since charity, according to its very notion, causes peace. Activism pays the rent on being alive and being here on the planet. The Bible has a very meaningful expression: The Spirit makes all things new. We are those who grow old, and we want everything done to our aged standards. The Spirit is never old; the Spirit is always young. The only thing that's been a worse flop than the organization of nonviolence has been the organization of violence. Heresy is only another word for freedom of thought. Only in the last moment in history has the delusion arisen that people can flourish apart from the rest of the living world. The TEA party people clamor incessantly for spending cuts, but no one can ever get a Republican politician to name even one specific program whatsoever that they would cut. They can't name them because their voters would freak out if they knew. Here, let me name a few for them: Social security, medicare, education, welfare. Pres. Roosevelt cautioned our nation not to become seized with FEAR, but the nation has succumbed. In the small city of Ramona, a group of citizen leaders in the Ramona Forum has launched a "WAR against FEAR". The response to this demonstration was overwhelmingly exuberant. They will be expanding the "War On Fear" footprint soon. Gay Texas councilman makes plea to gay youth
Fort Worth, Texas Councilman Joel Burns has become a hero and role model by his speech promoting hope for gay teens who feel depressed and threatened because of their sexuality. Burns gave a 13 minute emotional speech which went viral on You Tube, in which he described his own struggle to come to grips with his sexual orientation years ago. He implored desperate teens not to lose faith and hope in a future, and wept over the spate of suicides of teens as young as 11 and as late teen as 18 in recent weeks, due to constant bullying on the internet, and rejection by churches and parents who claim to be "religious", but are committing the greatest sin imaginable--the repudiation of children!
