No 'graceful exit' possible from Afghanistan
DEEP INSIGHTS, By BOB HERBERT, NY Times: The military brass is just blowing smoke at Obama, giving the nation a load of double-speak that puts even Alan Greenspan to shame. "Half of all the American troop deaths in Afghanistan have occurred since Mr. Obama took office", the war is a giant roadblock in the way of efforts to deal effectively with deteriorating economic and social conditions here in the United States.. Look around at the economy, the public school system, the federal budget deficits, the fiscal conditions plaguing America’s state and local governments." Read More

SD candidate for Congress goes on hunger strike
Thursday, 08/19/2010
"Representative Hunter either has no respect for the voters of his district, or else is so terrified of engaging in an honest debate on the issues that he refuses to face his challengers," said Ray Lutz, the Democratic candidate challenging Rep. Duncan D. Hunter for California's 52nd congressional seat. "Until Hunter steps up to the plate, I'll be stepping away from the dinner plate," Lutz said.

Issa & Bilbray: supporting corporate personhood
Thursday, 08/19/2010
An overwhelming 73% of voters, including 67% of Republicans and 71% of independents, are more likely to support a candidate for Congress who works to reduce the influence of corporate lobbyists in Washington. And almost two out of three voters (60%) disagree with the Supreme Court's decision in the Citizens United case. Neither Darrell Issa nor Brian Bilbray have signed this pledge.

POLL: 52% Americans now support gay marriage
Friday, 08/20/2010
For the first time a national poll showed majority support for same-sex marriage. A new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation Poll shows the gap widens dramatically when age is taken into account. Nearly six in ten Americans under the age of 50 say gay rights are protected under the Constitution. Only 38 percent of Americans over the age of 50 say the same thing. [Perhaps the GOP should start supporing Medicare so their voting base lives longer?]

CB City Council Hearing-Palomar Commons/Lowe's
Tuesday, 08/24/2010
Want the next big box store in your neighborhood? Last month the Carlsbad Planning Commission approved new zoning "General Commercial" that can be applied anywhere in the city-on lots as small as 1/2 acre. They then used this new zoning to approve a big box retail store along scenic El Camino Real(the old Olympic Resort). The proposed project will add over 12,000 daily auto trips along already congested Palomar Airport Rd and El Camino Real. To oppose this project, plan to attend this important Carlsbad City Council hearing.

This 'N That

The Holy Prophet Mohammed came into this world and taught us: 'That man is a Muslim who never hurts anyone by word or deed, but who works for the benefit and happiness of God's creatures. Belief in God is to love one's fellow men.'
- Abdul Ghaffar Khann

We are going to have to find ways of organizing ourselves cooperatively, sanely, scientifically, harmonically and in regenerative spontaneity with the rest of humanity around the earth.... We are not going to be able to operate our spaceship earth successfully nor for much longer unless we see it as a whole spaceship and our fate as common.
- Buckminster Fuller

. . . [T]o live not with hands clenched to grasp, to strike, to hold tight to a life that is always slipping away the more tightly we hold it, but . . . to live with the hands stretched out both to give and receive with gladness.
- (Carl) Frederick Buechner

They make a desert and call it peace.
- Tactitus

If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.
- Bishop Desmond Tutu

True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power. Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it.
- Milan Kundera

There have been periods of history in which episodes of terrible violence occurred but for which the word violence was never used...Violence is shrouded in justifying myths that lend it moral legitimacy, and these myths for the most part kept people from recognizing the violence for what it was. The people who burned witches at the stake never for one moment thought of their act as violence; rather they though of it as an act of divinely mandated righteousness. The same can be said of most of the violence we humans have ever committed.
- Gil Bailie

I believe we are on the edge of a quantum leap into a whole new way of organizing and living as a human family.
- Mairead Corrigan Maguire

What a cruel thing is war: to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joys and happiness God has granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors, and to devastate the fair face of this beautiful world.
- Robert E. Lee, in a letter to his wife, 1864

Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

We must have research for peace ... It would embrace the outstanding problems of morality. The time has come for man's intellect, his scientific method, to win over the immoral brutality and irrationality of war and militarism ... Now we are forced to eliminate from the world forever this vestige of prehistoric barbarism, this curse to the human race.
- Linus Pauling

The first essential characteristics of nonviolent action is that it is creative.
- Hildegarde Goss-Mayr

The master's tools will never destroy the master's house.
- Audre Lorde, Sister Outsider

Freedom is actually a bigger game than power. Power is about what you can control. Freedom is about what you can unleash.
- Harriet Rubin

A solid rock is not disturbed by the wind; even so, a wise person is not agitated by praise or blame.
- Dhammapada

Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups.
- John Kenneth Galbraith

A peace that comes from fear and not from the heart is the opposite of peace.
- Gersonides

When asked what he would do if he knew the world would end tomorrow, Martin Luther said, "I would plant a tree."
- Martin Luther

It belongs to the very substance of nonviolence never to destroy or damage another person's feeling of self worth, even an opponent's. We all need, constantly, an advance of trust and affirmation.
- Bernard Haring

I expect to pass through this world but once, therefore any good that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not come this way again.
- Stephen Grellett 1773-1855

The maxim that people should not have a right till they are ready to exercise it properly, is worthy of the fool in the old story who resolved not to go into the water till he had learned to swim.
- Macaulay

Accurst be he that first invented war.
- Christopher Marlowe (Tamburlaine)

Believe those who are seeking the truth; doubt those who find it.
- Andre Gide

Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

The two kinds of people who exist in this world [at any one time] are the decent and the indecent. Color, religion and nationality are irrelevant. Kindness, decency and behavior are what matters most. Our collective challenge, it seems, is to create a city and community where decent people of all races, ethnicities and religions can look into the faces of other decent people and see only one thing -- God's image smiling back.
- Rabbi Micah Greenstein

The law, in its majestic equality, forbids both rich and poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.
- Anatole France

Only the poor knew the meaning of life; the rich and the safe had to guess.
- Charles Bukowsky

Until he extends the circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace.
- Albert Schweitzer

If peace . . . only had the music and pageantry of war, there'd be no wars.
- Sophie Kerr

You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.
- Indira Gandhi, 1971

The peace process we all aim for will not necessarily be a result of the mere signing of a treaty or agreement. It must become a matter of our everyday lives, so that peace settles and lasts and becomes supported by everybody. We therefore have to give peace all the required care and preserve it and promote it.
- King Hassan II of Morocco (1929-1999)

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Someday they'll give a war and nobody will come.
- Carl Sandburg

CA Dem candidates endorse gay marriage decision
Both Jerry Brown, current CA Attorney General, and Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate for Atty Gen, endorse the immediate commencement of same-sex marriage in California. As William Gladstone once said, 'Justice delayed is justice denied.'"

Republicans launch new war against Social Security
Social Security's attackers claim that they're concerned about the program's financial future. But their math doesn't add up. "Conservatives hate Social Security for ideological reasons: its success undermines their claim that government is always the problem, never the solution. But they receive crucial support from Washington insiders, for whom a declared willingness to cut Social Security has long served as a badge of fiscal seriousness, never mind the arithmetic." By Paul Krugman

Peace in a divided house: rationality prevails
A liberal writer in Fallbrook, married to a rational conservative Marine colonel, discusses their conversations on Prop 8 same-sex marriage, a woman's choice and the purpose of marriage. Conclusion: America is tolerant and not furious over these issues. By Kit-Bacon Gressitt.

Your Boycott BP Action is Working!

Pat Tillman's mother speaks out on Gen McChrystal
"Pat is not more important or special than any of the others who have fought in these wars, but the truth of what happened to Pat — and to every soldier who has died — is important... The government didn't just lie to us; it lied to a nation."

Dream Act:: saving students from deportation
"The Dream Act would help lead to naturalization for youths who came to the United States before age 15, earned GEDs or high school degrees and completed two years in college or in the armed forces. The measure is carefully aimed, targeting only young people with clean records who have resided in the country continuously for at least five years." EDITORIAL: Washington Post.

Brilliant commentary from local liberals on Prop 8
One cannot but notice the brilliance of comments from local liberal writers who follow in the footsteps of that brilliant jurist, Judge Vaughn Walker, who paved a wide and smooth road for the trial against Prop 8 as it proceeds to the U.S. Supreme Court. Nor can one ignore the paucity of arguments of the opponents. Here are some comments by North County progressives:

Ted Olson: Why Prop 8 is a loser's position

Constitutional lawyer, Ted Olson, in his victory over Prop 8 speech, calls this a great victory for individual and civil rights under the U.S. Constitution. A short, but great speech.

Killing Prop Hate: What Republicans Fear
"A conservative Republican judge, appointed by George H.W. Bush has done what the Tea Party activists have been demanding – he restored the Constitution. Judge Vaughn Walker held that the U.S. Constitution, and its provisions requiring equal protection of the laws, required that Proposition Hate be stricken down. A Federal Judge may not put his moral or religious beliefs above the requirements of the Constitution." By Tom Hall LA Progressive.

Mexico court opens gay marriage to entire nation
"The Mexican Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that each of the country's 31 states must recognize same-sex marriages registered in Mexico City, potentially giving gay and lesbian couples full matrimonial rights nationwide. The court had already ruled this month that Mexico City's same-sex marriage law, which took effect in March and has resulted in hundreds of same-sex marriages, was constitutional." NY TIMES

America's only major jobs program: US military
"Having a giant undercover military jobs program is an insane way to keep Americans employed. It creates jobs we don’t need but we keep anyway because there’s no honest alternative... By the way, Gates isn’t trying to cut the overall Pentagon budget. He just wants to trim certain programs to make room for more military spending with a higher priority... This is nuts." By Robert Reich

Judge orders Gitmo detainee released
U.S. Judge Henry Kennedy judge ordered Adnan Farhan Abd Al Latif released after ruling that not only did the government have no evidence of wrongdoing by Latif, but that he provided "a plausible alternative story to explain his travel."

Reagan's economist: GOP destroyed US economy
"How my G.O.P. destroyed the U.S. economy." Yes, that is exactly what David Stockman, President Ronald Reagan's director of the Office of Management and Budget, wrote in a recent New York Times op-ed piece, "Four Deformations of the Apocalypse." Get it? Not "destroying." The GOP has already "destroyed" the U.S. economy, setting up an "American Apocalypse."

Busby takes up arms against enemies of Soc. Sec.
Francine Busby forewarns us of the coming Republican war against Social Security, which has been a stunning success for over 75 years: "The Congressional Budget Office reports Social Security has over a $2.5 trillion surplus and is anticipated to pay full benefits for another quarter of a century." Its solvency is far superior to that of American brokerage firms and mega banks, and is far more stable than the stock market.

Cong. candidate Ray Lutz says end the wars

San Diego Democratic candidate for US Congress, Ray Lutz, offers a clear choice against Duncan Hunger, Junior. He says we must end the wars and bring our troops home.

Jews rejoice at Overturn of Gay Marriage Ban
By Rabbi Michael Lerner: "Homosexuals were with us in Auschwitz and were persecuted along with Jews throughout Western societies for the past several thousand years, so we stand with them in the struggle for full acceptance and full legal equality, including marriage equality, in the 21st century. But even had they not shared our fate, the denial of rights and the double standards used to justify such denials are always a threat to Jews as well as to everyone else on the planet!"
