Hope that you might have baked it or bought or even kneaded it yourself. For that look on his face, for your meeting his eyes across a piece of bread, you might be willing to lose a lot, or suffer a lot, or die a little, even. Believe those who are seeking the truth; doubt those who find it. When the rich make war, it's the poor that die. A loving person lives in a loving world. A hostile person lives in a hostile world. Everyone you meet is your mirror. Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is--whether its victim is human or animal--we cannot expect things to be much better in this world... We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight in killing we set back the progress of humanity. Nothing could be worse than the fear that one had given up too soon, and left one unexpended effort that might have saved the world. I don't do great things. I do small things with great love. The law, in its majestic equality, forbids both rich and poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread. The longer we listen to one another - with real attention - the more commonality we will find in all our lives. That is, if we are careful to exchange with one another life stories and not simply opinions. Fondly do we hope, ferverently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Until lions have their historians, tales of the hunt shall always glorify the hunters. If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility. Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess. The only thing that's been a worse flop than the organization of nonviolence has been the organization of violence. Each person has inside a basic decency and goodness. If he listens to it and acts on it, he is giving a great deal of what it is the world needs most. It is not complicated but it takes courage. It takes courage for a person to listen to his own goodness and act on it. All social life is essentially practical. All mysterious which lead theory to mysticism find their rational solution in human practice and in the comprehension of the practice. The maxim that people should not have a right till they are ready to exercise it properly, is worthy of the fool in the old story who resolved not to go into the water till he had learned to swim. Abba Poeman said about Abba Prior that every single day he made a fresh beginning. I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones. It is easier to fight for one's principles than to live up to them. True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power. Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it. The first essential characteristics of nonviolent action is that it is creative. Some things you must always be unable to bear. Some things you must never stop refusing to bear. Injustice and outrage and dishonor and shame. No matter how young you are or how old you have got. Not for kudos and not for cash, your picture in the paper nor money in the bank, neither. Just refuse to bear them. If in our daily life we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. This is the most basic kind of peace work. When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it? While you are proclaiming peace with your lips, be careful to have it even more fully in your heart. The real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. The fragrance always remains in the hand that gives the rose. If we do not change our direction we are likely to end up where we are headed for. All violence consists in some people forcing others, under threat of suffering or death, to do what the do not want to do. Everyone takes the limits of his own vision for the limits of the world. An act of love, a voluntary taking on oneself of some of the pain of the world, increases the courage and love and hope of all. Is it progress if a cannibal uses a knife and fork? In a time of universal deceit - telling the truth is a revolutionary act. Mounting an expedition to actualize a Compassionate Commonwealth of all peoples...is the great spiritual challenge of our time. It is not your obligation to complete your work, but you are not at liberty to quit. In India when we meet and part we often say, "Namaste," which means: I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides; I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides; I honor the place in you of love, of light, of truth, of peace. I honor the place within you where if you are in that place in you and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us…..
