Event Reminders:  Hearing to deny toxic Gregory Canyon Dump

The Army Corp. of Engineers will conduct an open "Scoping Meeting" in San Marcos on Thursday, June 3 at 6:00PM. The Gregory Canyon Landfill is proposed to be carved into the side of a mountain sacred to the local Luiseño people. Environmental Health Coalition has opposed this project from the beginning because of environmental justice concerns. The dump would be located next to the Pala reservation, home to more than 600 people. The landfill would also contaminate the San Louis Rey River, (which the dump property straddles) which supplies water not only to the Pala tribe but also to the City of Oceanside.

Friday, June 4, Solano Beach: Citizens in North County are mobilizing to protest Brian Bilbray's extreme support for racial profiling and recent racist remarks (that 'illegal aliens' can be identified by their shoes and criminal behavior). The aim of the protest is to reach mainstream voters in November who would be persuaded to abandon an overtly bigoted candidate who has become an embarrassment to the community. By Tracy Emblem - in 1996, Congress passed the Defense of Marriage Act known as DOMA, which provides that no state needs to treat a relationship between persons of the same sex as a marriage, even if the relationship is considered a marriage in another state.
DOMA is blatantly unconstitutional because it violates the "full faith and credit" provision in Article IV, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution. At least seven fishermen involved in the cleanup of the BP oil spill were hospitalized on Wednesday after reporting nausea, dizziness, headaches and chest pains. The fishermen were likely exposed to both the leaked oil and chemical dispersants. The fundamental characteristic of the Tea Party is "constitutional conservatism." It adopts a rigorous tenent: If the Constitution does not specifically mention it, the federal government isn't allowed to do it. This represents a kind of 10th Amendment fundamentalism -- a muscular form of states' rights that would undo much of the federal role since Franklin Roosevelt, perhaps since Abraham Lincoln. Good news poll: Halter leads Lincoln in Ark.

True Blue Democrat Bill Halter is leading "bluedog Democrat" Blanche Lincoln in the Arkansas senate race, in the latest poll, and outpacing her also in rundraising. Daily Kos poll released on Thursday showed that he leads Lincoln by a margin of 47 percent to 44 percent -- the second straight poll to show the lieutenant governor on top.
