How to determine your vote for judgeships
INSIGHTS - by Joe Howard Crews - May 17, 2010 -- The scale in the calm hand of blindfolded Lady Justice is in danger of being stolen from the San Diego Superior Court by bitter political discord and poison politics. The Republican party has endorsed their candidates, all of whom received inferior evaluations. Read More

- Dorothy Day

Some things you must always be unable to bear. Some things you must never stop refusing to bear. Injustice and outrage and dishonor and shame. No matter how young you are or how old you have got. Not for kudos and not for cash, your picture in the paper nor money in the bank, neither. Just refuse to bear them.
- William Faulkner

Angels can fly because they take themselves so lightly.
- G.K. Chesterton

It is only by feeling your love that the poor will forgive you for the gifts of bread.

Christian Right Targets San Diego Judges
KPBS: "America's culture wars over gay marriage and abortion rights are playing out in San Diego County's judicial elections. A conservative movement has sprung up on the internet. It endorses a slate of candidates who are challenging four incumbent San Diego judges in the June primary."

Howard Dean to Obama: Keep your promise on DADT
Howard Dean sending petition to President Obama, reminding him he promised in January to end "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". DEAN: "One of our nation's most precious and fundamental values is the guarantee of equal rights for every American. Gay and lesbian Americans have demonstrated their courage and given their lives in service to our country since our nation's military was founded. Now it's time to allow them to say who they are." SIGN the PETITION:

New target of rights erosions: U.S. citizens
"A primary reason Bush and Cheney succeeded in their radical erosion of core liberties is because they focused their assault on non-citizens with foreign-sounding names, casting the appearance that none of what they were doing would ever affect the average American... The most recent liberty-abridging, Terrorism-justified controversies have focused on diluting the legal rights of American citizens". By Glenn Greenwald

VISTA: Teachers compelled to cancel art event
Teacher overload: "Teachers at Rancho Buena Vista High School have canceled a popular art event this year, in part to protest proposed district-wide budget cuts. The school's four visual arts teachers sent a letter to students and parents Tuesday, letting them know they weren't going to put on the annual ArtSplash chalk festival this year." North County Times

We endorse the following San Diego Judges:
A concentrated effort in San Diego has been launched by fundamentalists to take over the judiciary by running hand picked judges in the June 8 election. They are running a grassroots campaign in the evangelical churches to try and take over the local judiciary with 4 candidates who are committed to their political positions. The Republican Party is supporting their effort to elect judges based on religious ideology. The Progressive Post endorses these 5 highly qualified incumbents:

TRACY EMBLEM: Prop 16 is bad for Californians
"California allows cities and counties to purchase electricity or develop it locally through an energy provider of their choice. Currently 68 percent of California’s electricity is generated by investor-owned utilities. Proposition 16, on the June 8 primary ballot, would alter local government’s ability to develop electricity service and is bad for California’s residents and businesses."By Tracy Emblem, Democratic candidate for US Congress, 50th.

Holder Backs a Miranda Limit for Terror Suspects
The Obama administration said Sunday it would seek a law allowing investigators to interrogate terrorism suspects without informing them of their rights... Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, said Congress had no authority to "chip away"at the Miranda ruling because it was based in the Constitution. He predicted that any effort to carve a broader exception would be vigorously contested.

Wall Street finally running scared of the people
"The tide has dramatically turned in favor of financial reform. As the Dodd bill has worked its way through the Senate, many Republicans joined Democrats to approve strengthening amendments that were politically unthinkable just a few weeks ago. Several more will be considered this week, prior to final passage... But for the first time since the meltdown began, drastic reform has serious momentum. And Republicans are usefully on the defensive, embarrassed to vote with Wall Street." By Robert Kuttner

San Francisco boycotts Arizona over racist law

American values on migrant workers

Baseball players strike at Arizona immigrant law
Arizona Racism: Major League Baseball players, nearly 30% of whom are Latino, are calling for repeal of the Arizona racist law. Players are demanding that the 2011 All-Star Game be moved from Phoenix, AZ unless the law is repealed—and we've got to get their backs. MLB Commissioner Bud Selig has the final decision on whether to move the All-Star Game, but he isn't likely to listen to the players unless he hears from fans too. Support the baseball players by signing this MoveOn.org petition.

How bad could the BP ERUPTION get?
"How much oil is gushing into the Gulf of Mexico? No one knows for sure, but the answer is likely far, far worse than what BP has admitted. One outside calculation estimates that the Gulf has already experienced the equivalent of six Exxon Valdez spills. And without an accurate number, there's increasing fear that the response may fail." From MOTHER JONES

WW III has been tragic failure: War on Drugs
The Associated Press has just dropped a bombshell on America's longest running war and the headline says it all: "The US Drug War has Met None of its Goals". The extensive piece reviews the last 40 years, starting with President Nixon's official launch of the War on Drugs all the way to President Obama's annual strategy released this week. From HUFF POST

Arizona: Enforcing "white chauvanistic culture"
"Arizona's passing of that mean-spirited immigration law wasn't about high-minded principle or the need to maintain public order. Apparently, it was all about putting Latinos in their place." By Eugene Robinson, NEW YORK TIMES

Boycott Valero and Arco Gas!
In light of the terrible oil spill which is currently causing an unprecedented environmental disaster off the coast of New Orleans, it is more important than ever that we take action by reducing gas consumption through carpooling and taking public transportation. Also please begin boycotting Arco, (BP, the oil spill response-or lack thereof-screw-ups deluxe, owns them), continue avoiding Valero Energy, write Congress and President Obama repeatedly and encourage them to stop future offshore oil drilling! Let's hit them all where it hurts-in the pocket book-the only place they understand!-Nina Hall, Environmental Editor.

George Rekers Is Completely Heterosexual

George Rekers, founder of the Family Research Council, and ultra right-wing anti-gay organization, was caught with a rent-a-boy in Europe. Roy Zimmerman points out in his sardonic way that Mr. Rekers is just one in a long line of self loathing gay men who are prominent in anti-gay hate groups.

Help toss out Jane Harmon!

May 23: Save the Whales Again
On May 23, from San Diego to Eureka, Californians will gather to send a message to the Obama administration: Do not consent to allow the legalization of commercial whaling and lifting of the global moratorium that has been in place at the International Whaling Commission since 1986. The Sierra Club is sponsoring a demonstration in Morro Bay. Story courtesy of the Santa Lucian.

Inside a Bad Deal
A committee of the IWC issued a draft package of proposals titled “Consensus Decision to Improve the Conservation of Whales”. The proposal will be discussed at the IWC annual meeting, in Agadir, Morocco, June 21-25, 2010. If adopted, it would result in lifting the moratorium on commercial whaling for a period of ten years and legitimize the commercial whaling activities of Japan, Norway, and Iceland – currently undertaken under formal objections to IWC regulations (Norway and Iceland) or as special permit “research” (Japan). The European Commission would be unable to require the termination of Iceland’s whaling program as a condition of its pending application for entry into the EU. Story courtesy of the Santa Lucian.
