Drilling, Disaster, Denial - and silver lining?
By Paul Krugman - "Environmentalism began as a response to pollution that everyone could see. The spill in the gulf recalls the 1969 blowout that coated the beaches of Santa Barbara in oil. But 1969 was also the year the Cuyahoga River, which flows through Cleveland, caught fire. Meanwhile, Lake Erie was widely declared 'dead,' its waters contaminated by algal blooms...And maybe, just maybe, the [Gulf oil] disaster will help reverse environmentalism's long political slide." This 'N That

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.
- Alvin Toffler

When the people fear the government you have tyranny...when the government fears the people you have liberty.
- Thomas Jefferson

Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds them. We live by the death of others. We are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.
- Leonardo Da Vinci

Capitalism is the extraordinary belief that the nastiest of men, for the nastiest of reasons, will somehow work for the benefit of us all.
- John Maynard Keynes

Change comes not from men and women changing their minds, but from the change from one generation to the next.
- J. K. Galbraith

The world cannot continue to wage war like physical giants and to seek peace like intellectual pygmies
- Basil O'Connor

Immorality: the morality of those who are having a better time.
- H.L. Mencken

Peace is not a relationship of nations. It is a condition of mind brought about by a serenity of soul. Peace is not merely an absence of war. It is also a state of mind. Lasting peace can come only to peaceful people.
- Jawaharlal Nehru

I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.
- Albert Einstein

Sometime in your life, hope that you might see one starved man, the look on his face when the bread finally arrives. Hope that you might have baked it or bought or even kneaded it yourself. For that look on his face, for your meeting his eyes across a piece of bread, you might be willing to lose a lot, or suffer a lot, or die a little, even.
- Daniel Berrigan, SJ

The arms race can kill, though the weapons themselves may never be used...by their cost alone, armaments kill the poor by causing them to starve.
- Vatican statement to the U.N., 1976

All social life is essentially practical. All mysterious which lead theory to mysticism find their rational solution in human practice and in the comprehension of the practice.
- Karl Marx

Violence just hurts those who are already hurt...Instead of exposing the brutality of the oppressor, it justifies it.
- Cesar Chavez

But the wisdom from above is pure, first of all; it is also peaceful, gentle and friendly; it is full of compassion and produces a harvest of good deals,; it is free from prejudice and hypocrisy.
- James 3:17

You can't lead anyone else further than you have gone yourself.
- Gene Mauch

Why not go out on a limb? That's where the fruit is.
- Will Rogers

All works of love are works of peace.
- Mother Teresa

There is a certain kind of peace that is not merely the absence of war. It is larger than that. The peace I am thinking of is not at the mercy of history's rule, nor is it a passive surrender to the status quo. The peace I am thinking of is the dance of an open mind when it engages another equally open one -- an activity that occurs most naturally, most often in the reading/writing world we live in. Accessible as it is, this particular kind of peace warrants vigilance.
- Toni Morrison, The Dancing Mind (1996)

Teach this triple truth to all: A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.
- Buddha

War is an act of violence pushed to its utmost limits.

Angry heart -- you have no chance against my prayers.
- Mary Moreno

Chaos is a name for any order that produces confusion in our minds.
- George Santayana

If you see good in people, you radiate a harmonious loving energy which uplifts those who are around you. If you can maintain this habit, this energy will turn into a steady flow of love.
- Annamalai Swami

If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.
- Nelson Mandela

Nonviolence which is a quality of the heart, cannot come by an appeal to the brain.
- Mahatma Gandhi

Do all the good you can,
- By all the means you can,

In the twilight of life, God will not judge us on our earthly possessions and human success, but rather on how much we have loved.
- St. John of the Cross

The belief in the possibility of a short decisive war appears to be one of the most ancient and dangerous of human illusions.
- Robert Lynd (1879-1949), Anglo-Irish essayist, journalist

What good is it to me that Mary gave birth to the son of God fourteen hundred years ago, and I do not also give birth to the Son of God in my time and in my culture? We are all meant to be mothers of God. God is always needing to be born.
- Meister Eckhart

Young people say, What is the sense of our small effort? They cannot see that we must lay one brick at at time, take one step at a time; we can be responsible only for the one action in the present moment. But we can beg for an increase of love in our hearts that will vitalize and transform all our individual actions, and know that God will take them and multiply them, as Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes.
- Dorothy Day, 1963

It is clear that the way to heal society of its violence . . . and lack of love is to replace the pyramid of domination with the circle of equality and respect.
- Manitonquat

What is man?
- Hope turned to dust.

While seeking revenge, dig two graves - one for yourself.
- Doug Horton

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.
- Helen Keller

And all good things are yours.
- Swedish proverb

Smiling is very important. If we are not able to smile, then the world will not have peace. It is not by going out for a demonstration against nuclear missiles that we can bring about peace. It is with our capacity of smiling, breathing, and being peace that we can make peace.

A merely fallen enemy may rise again, but the reconciled one is truly vanquished.

- Douglas MacArthur

The finger pulls the trigger, but the trigger may also be pulling the finger.
- Dr. Leonard Berkowitz

Very few people chose war. They chose selfishness and the result was war. Each of us, individually and nationally, must choose: total love or total war.
- Dave Dellinger

I'd like someone to mention the day that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to give his life serving others. I'd like somebody to say that day, that Martin Luther King tried to love somebody. I want you to say that day, that I tried to be right on the war question. I want you to be able to say that day, that I did try to feed the hungry . . . I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity. Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice; say that I was a drum major for peace; I was a drum major for righteousness . . . I want to leave a committed life behind.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Non-violence is a very powerful weapon. Most people don't understand the power of non-violence and tend to be amazed by the whole idea. Those who have been involved in bringing about change and see the difference between violence and non-violence are firmly committed to a lifetime of non-violence, not because it is easy or because it is cowardly, but because it is an effective and very powerful way.
- Cesar Chavez

Nothing is so strong as gentleness; nothing so gentle as real strength.
- St. Francis de Sales

A free society is one where it is safe to be unpopular.

Massey has taken steps to keep up the mining in the grief-stricken community. Bilbray can spot illegals by their clothing

Arizona Senate Bill 1070 would require law enforcement officials in the state of Arizona to investigate someone's immigration status if there is "reasonable suspicion" that the person might be undocumented. I wonder who that would be, and if anybody who doesn't have brown skin will be investigated. Those without identification papers, even if they are legal, are subject to arrest; so don't forget your wallet on your way to work if you are Hispanic in Arizona.

Behind the Arizona Immigration Law: Vote Games
Article
By Greg Palast - The real motive behind the Arizona intimidation of Latinos is not so much as for deportation, as intimidation of potential voters. Unless this demographic locomotive is halted, Arizona Republicans know their party will soon be electoral toast. Or, if you like, tortillas."
