Drilling, Disaster, Denial - and silver lining?
By Paul Krugman - "Environmentalism began as a response to pollution that everyone could see. The spill in the gulf recalls the 1969 blowout that coated the beaches of Santa Barbara in oil. But 1969 was also the year the Cuyahoga River, which flows through Cleveland, caught fire. Meanwhile, Lake Erie was widely declared 'dead,' its waters contaminated by algal blooms...And maybe, just maybe, the [Gulf oil] disaster will help reverse environmentalism's long political slide." This 'N That

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.
- Alvin Toffler

When the people fear the government you have tyranny...when the government fears the people you have liberty.
- Thomas Jefferson

Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds them. We live by the death of others. We are burial places! I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.
- Leonardo Da Vinci

Capitalism is the extraordinary belief that the nastiest of men, for the nastiest of reasons, will somehow work for the benefit of us all.
- John Maynard Keynes

Change comes not from men and women changing their minds, but from the change from one generation to the next.
- J. K. Galbraith

The world cannot continue to wage war like physical giants and to seek peace like intellectual pygmies
- Basil O'Connor

Immorality: the morality of those who are having a better time.
- H.L. Mencken

Peace is not a relationship of nations. It is a condition of mind brought about by a serenity of soul. Peace is not merely an absence of war. It is also a state of mind. Lasting peace can come only to peaceful people.
- Jawaharlal Nehru

I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.
- Albert Einstein

Sometime in your life, hope that you might see one starved man, the look on his face when the bread finally arrives. Hope that you might have baked it or bought or even kneaded it yourself. For that look on his face, for your meeting his eyes across a piece of bread, you might be willing to lose a lot, or suffer a lot, or die a little, even.
- Daniel Berrigan, SJ

The arms race can kill, though the weapons themselves may never be used...by their cost alone, armaments kill the poor by causing them to starve.
- Vatican statement to the U.N., 1976

All social life is essentially practical. All mysterious which lead theory to mysticism find their rational solution in human practice and in the comprehension of the practice.
- Karl Marx

Violence just hurts those who are already hurt...Instead of exposing the brutality of the oppressor, it justifies it.
- Cesar Chavez

But the wisdom from above is pure, first of all; it is also peaceful, gentle and friendly; it is full of compassion and produces a harvest of good deals,; it is free from prejudice and hypocrisy.
- James 3:17

You can't lead anyone else further than you have gone yourself.
- Gene Mauch

Why not go out on a limb? That's where the fruit is.
- Will Rogers

All works of love are works of peace.
- Mother Teresa

There is a certain kind of peace that is not merely the absence of war. It is larger than that. The peace I am thinking of is not at the mercy of history's rule, nor is it a passive surrender to the status quo. The peace I am thinking of is the dance of an open mind when it engages another equally open one -- an activity that occurs most naturally, most often in the reading/writing world we live in. Accessible as it is, this particular kind of peace warrants vigilance.
- Toni Morrison, The Dancing Mind (1996)

Teach this triple truth to all: A generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which renew humanity.
- Buddha

War is an act of violence pushed to its utmost limits.
- Major General Carl von Clausewitz, 1832

Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives.

Angry heart -- you have no chance against my prayers.
- Mary Moreno

Chaos is a name for any order that produces confusion in our minds.
- George Santayana

If you see good in people, you radiate a harmonious loving energy which uplifts those who are around you. If you can maintain this habit, this energy will turn into a steady flow of love.
- Annamalai Swami

If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.
- Nelson Mandela

Nonviolence which is a quality of the heart, cannot come by an appeal to the brain.
- Mahatma Gandhi

Do all the good you can,
- By all the means you can,

In the twilight of life, God will not judge us on our earthly possessions and human success, but rather on how much we have loved.
- St. John of the Cross

The belief in the possibility of a short decisive war appears to be one of the most ancient and dangerous of human illusions.
- Robert Lynd (1879-1949), Anglo-Irish essayist, journalist

What good is it to me that Mary gave birth to the son of God fourteen hundred years ago, and I do not also give birth to the Son of God in my time and in my culture? We are all meant to be mothers of God. God is always needing to be born.
- Meister Eckhart

Young people say, What is the sense of our small effort? They cannot see that we must lay one brick at at time, take one step at a time; we can be responsible only for the one action in the present moment. But we can beg for an increase of love in our hearts that will vitalize and transform all our individual actions, and know that God will take them and multiply them, as Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes.
- Dorothy Day, 1963

It is clear that the way to heal society of its violence . . . and lack of love is to replace the pyramid of domination with the circle of equality and respect.
- Manitonquat

What is man?
- Hope turned to dust.

While seeking revenge, dig two graves - one for yourself.
- Doug Horton

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.
- Helen Keller

And all good things are yours.
- Swedish proverb

Smiling is very important. If we are not able to smile, then the world will not have peace. It is not by going out for a demonstration against nuclear missiles that we can bring about peace. It is with our capacity of smiling, breathing, and being peace that we can make peace.
- Thich Nhat Hanh

- John Kenneth Galbraith

A merely fallen enemy may rise again, but the reconciled one is truly vanquished.

- Douglas MacArthur

The finger pulls the trigger, but the trigger may also be pulling the finger.
- Dr. Leonard Berkowitz

Very few people chose war. They chose selfishness and the result was war. Each of us, individually and nationally, must choose: total love or total war.
- Dave Dellinger

I'd like someone to mention the day that Martin Luther King, Jr., tried to give his life serving others. I'd like somebody to say that day, that Martin Luther King tried to love somebody. I want you to say that day, that I tried to be right on the war question. I want you to be able to say that day, that I did try to feed the hungry . . . I want you to say that I tried to love and serve humanity. Yes, if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice; say that I was a drum major for peace; I was a drum major for righteousness . . . I want to leave a committed life behind.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Non-violence is a very powerful weapon. Most people don't understand the power of non-violence and tend to be amazed by the whole idea. Those who have been involved in bringing about change and see the difference between violence and non-violence are firmly committed to a lifetime of non-violence, not because it is easy or because it is cowardly, but because it is an effective and very powerful way.
- Cesar Chavez

Nothing is so strong as gentleness; nothing so gentle as real strength.
- St. Francis de Sales

A free society is one where it is safe to be unpopular.
- Adlai Stevenson

There never was a war that was not inward; I must fight till I have conquered in myself what causes war.

A man may build himself a throne of bayonets, but he cannot sit on it.

U.S. Rep. Duncan D. Hunter, R-El Cajon, told a tea party gathering in Ramona that he would support deporting the U.S. citizen children of illegal immigrants. Rep. Bilbray supports 'DRILL, baby - DRILL!'
By Tracy Emblem: - "According to Source Watch, Bilbray has accepted $182,818 from oil companies. Considering Bilbray touts himself as an "environmentalist" is it reasonable to suspect there is a relationship to his special interest in lifting the long term off-shore oil drilling restrictions?"

Obama's most important battle: Supreme Court
"Nowhere has the conservative intellectual offensive been more effective than in transforming our discussion of the judiciary. That is why the coming clash over President Obama's next Supreme Court nominee is so important. CA trucker arrested while driving as Latino in AZ
"Californians have already been targeted. According to ABC 30 TV news, a truck driver -- a U.S. citizen of Latino heritage from Fresno -- was pulled over last week by Arizona police and arrested simply because he didn't have his birth certificate on him. The same could happen to any of us if the Arizona law is allowed to stand." By Rev. Eric Lee

Hilarious GOP Chicken Health Care plan
GOP senate hopeful, Sue Lowden, running against Sen Harry Reid of Nevada, offered her own take on a workable insurance program: "Let's change the system and talk about what the possibilities are. I'm telling you that this works. You know, before we all started having health care, in the olden days, our grandparents, they would bring a chicken to the doctor. They would say I'll paint your house." FIND out how many chickens for a colonoscopy.

Boycott Valero Gas!
Valero Energy — a Texas-based oil company — has already spent half a million dollars to fund a deceptive initiative that would destroy AB 32, California's landmark clean energy and air pollution law. Paid signature gatherers are already working the streets! Let's hit them where it hurts-in the pocket book-the only place they understand, and boycott Valero and all their affiliated gas stations! By Credo Action and Courage Campaign.

Ariz law violates heart and soul of American ideal
By Marjorie Cohn: New legislation in Arizona requires law enforcement officers to stop everyone whom they have "reasonable suspicion" to believe is an undocumented immigrant and arrest them if they fail to produce their papers. What constitutes "reasonable suspicion"? This law unconstitutionally criminalizes "walking while brown" in Arizona.

Massey Energy: coalminer's boss from hell
Massey Energy has prevented miners from attending funerals of the 29 victims of the killer explosion at Massey's Upper Big Branch mine in Montcoal, WV. Massey has taken steps to keep up the mining in the grief-stricken community. The "threat of job loss" from Massey's non-union mines, "be it spoken or simply understood — has created a culture of fear in some corners of Southern West Virginia, where coal is the only real industry, and Massey is king of the hill". From THINK PROGRESS

Union protection needed in coal mines
Massey forced the unions out, and now non-union coal miners have died in a coal mine cited for 600 violations in the past 18 months, so does the lack of a union contribute to safety concerns? Some people believe lack of unions is the problem of coal mine safety with respect to Massey and the recent tragedy of 25 miners who died in a West Virginia coal mine and 4 now stranded, left possibly to die because rescuers can't get near them.

POLL: Jerry Brown overtakes Whitman
Jerry Brown has gained little ground, but support for his top Republican opponent, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, has fallen off slightly, as she and Steve Poizner batter each other with television ads in their heated primary contest.

Bilbray can spot illegals by their clothing

Arizona Senate Bill 1070 would require law enforcement officials in the state of Arizona to investigate someone's immigration status if there is "reasonable suspicion" that the person might be undocumented. I wonder who that would be, and if anybody who doesn't have brown skin will be investigated. Those without identification papers, even if they are legal, are subject to arrest; so don't forget your wallet on your way to work if you are Hispanic in Arizona.

Your health: Don't Drain the Brain
The brain is a hungry organ, its cells requiring two times the amount of energy than that of other cells in the body. To work well and efficiently throughout the day, this energy level must be kept high enough so not to cause mental stress and exhaustion. What keeps your brain working at peak levels may surprise you. FOR YOUR HEALTH.

Twenty-five thousand copies of the first edition of a redesigned Blade hit the streets last Friday.

Gulf oil spill threatens seafood, tourism
"This goes beyond damage to the environment. You won't believe the kind of danger the Mississippi Gulf Coast tourism and the seafood industry is in. Hurricane Katrina did serious damage by spilling hundreds of leaks from oil rigs in the Gulf that left the place a mess, but we've never seen anything like what's coming toward us this weekend." (Gulf Coast excursion CEO)

Whaddaya Mean Obama Hasn't Done Anything?
Conventional commentary states Obama hasn't fulfilled those hopes and promises he made he made during his election campaign. NOT! He made spectacular progress in his first year. From ESQUIRE MAGAZINE

Break up the big banks now!
America's four largest banks - Citibank, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, and WellsFargo - have assets of $7.4 trillion, equal to 52% of our entire GDP. The collapse of any one would endanger the American economy, even the world economy. They are truly "too big to fail." They also have too much economic and political power because of their enormous size. Send a message to CONGRESS to BREAK UP THE BIG BANKS NOW!

Issa opponent slams him on Goldman Sachs ploy
By Howard Katz - Candidate for US Cong, 49th - Katz believes Issa's action in Goldman Sach's investigation is politically motivated: "I believe the request by Darrell Issa, et al, is politically motivated to dilute the focus on the SEC law suit." GOLDMAN: The insidious immorality of their scheme
As the U.S. housing market began its epic fall nearly three years ago, top executives at Wall Street powerhouse Goldman Sachs cheered the large financial gains the firm stood to make on certain bets it had placed, according to newly released documents. By Zachary Goldfarb, Washington Post

Goldman Sachs' Shitty Deal

Congress tries to get Goldman Sachs employees to admit that they do not consider their own costomer's best interest when selling them crap. While Goldman was selling junk investments such as packaged WaMu "stated income" mortgages, they bet against them in a "Big Short" hoping those very loans would fail.

Deport the children - Duncan Hunter hits a new low

Gulf oil slick threatening wildlife

The US Coast Guard has begun "controlled burning" to contain an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico caused by the explosion of a BP drilling rig. This will devastate wildlife habitat, cripple tourism and destroy many jobs.

Another HS student in MS humiliated, ostracized
"Not only did Wesson Attendance Center, the Mississippi high school, refuse to run Ceara Sturgis' photo in the annual yearbook, it refused to even mention the fact that she was part of this year's graduating class. Indeed, the lesbian teen who wanted to wear a tux in her yearbook photo has been scrapped from the book entirely."

PROP 16 designed to protect utility monopoly
NO on Prop 16: If you totally love the giant, for-profit, monopolistic utility that provides your electricity – and if you want to make it essentially impossible for anyone else to get into the electricity business ever again, as long as we all shall live - then Proposition 16 is the ballot measure for you! It’s being bankrolled to the tune of $35 million by Pacific Gas & Electric, primarily for the benefit of Pacific Gas & Electric. EDITORIAL: Orange County Register,

Too big to fail is too big to exist - Bust 'em up!
"The Wall Street reform bill that is before the Senate, now that Republicans have ended their filibuster, will make important changes to our laws to provide for the orderly liquidation of these trillion-dollar banks if necessary. Those changes are important but not sufficient. ...With mega-banks, a single insolvency can send our economy into a tailspin. We shouldn't wait for trouble; we should avoid it." Sen. Sherrod Brown will introduce legislation to bust 'em up.

Behind the Arizona Immigration Law: Vote Games
By Greg Palast - The real motive behind the Arizona intimidation of Latinos is not so much as for deportation, as intimidation of potential voters. "What moved GOP Governor Jan Brewer to sign the Soviet-style show-me-your-papers law is the exploding number of legal Hispanics, US citizens all, who are daring to vote -- and daring to vote Democratic by more than two-to-one. Unless this demographic locomotive is halted, Arizona Republicans know their party will soon be electoral toast. Or, if you like, tortillas."

Now we know the Teabaggers are corp. dupes:
The AFL-CIO had a protest at Wall Street on April 29th. Great, that makes sense. But they were not joined by the Tea party. It remains strangely silent about putting a legal harness on Wall Street bankers. Who is yanking their chain and putting the muzzle on them suddenly? By Cenk Uygur

Hawaii bill for same-sex civil unions advances
In a move that still needs the governor's signature to become law, the House of Representatives April 29 approved a measure that has drawn some of the state's biggest protest rallies. Republican Gov. Linda Lingle hasn't said whether she'll reject it or sign it into law but her office said later that she will carefully review the bill.

Coast Guard: At least 3 mos to contain oil spill
It will take at least three months to effectively stop the flow of oil rushing through a damaged well that is leaking oil into the Gulf of Mexico, Admiral Thad Allen, Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, and now National Incident Commander of the Gulf Coast oil spill said Monday morning. [The volume of oil already exceeds that of the Exxon Valdez in Alaska]

HEALTHCARE: Taiwan supercedes the US in healthcare
Taiwan insures 99 percent of its citizens through a single-payer national health insurance system that it started in 1995. The other 1 percent is mostly people who live overseas and choose not to participate. That's about as close to universal coverage as it gets. How did they do it? And how well does it work?
