This 'N That

In every child who is born, no matter what circumstances, and of no matter what parents, the potentiality of the human race is born again: and in him, too, once more, and of each of us, our terrific responsibility toward human life; toward the utmost idea of goodness, of the horror of terror, and of God.
- James Agee

Tradition is the living faith of dead people to which we must add our chapter while we have the gift of life. Traditionalism is the dead faith of living people who fear that if anything changes, the whole enterprise will crumble.
- Jaroslav Pelikan

If we emphasize the life and works of our greatest contributors . . . people will come to realize that moral courage is bravery of the highest type, and America will be called the "Champion of Peace."
- Senator Spark Matsunaga

It is folly to punish your neighbor by fire when you live next door.
- Publius Syrus

By logic and reason we die hourly. By imagination we live.
- John Butler Yeats

If in our daily life we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. This is the most basic kind of peace work.
- Thich Nhat Hanh

If there is to be any peace it will come through being, not having.
- Henry Miller

Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.
- Thomas Edison

Capitalism is the extraordinary belief that the nastiest of men, for the nastiest of reasons, will somehow work for the benefit of us all.
- John Maynard Keynes

Peace is an environment where conflicts are resolved without violence, where people are free, not exploited, living so they can grow to their full potential.
- Gerard Vanderhaar

Murder and capital punishment are not opposites that cancel one another, but similars that breed their kind. It is the deed that teaches not the name we give it.
- George Bernard Shaw

I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.
- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Peace is not the absence of conflict but the presence of creative alternatives for responding to conflict -- alternatives to passive or aggressive responses, alternatives to violence.
- Dorothy Thompson

Mounting an expedition to actualize a Compassionate Commonwealth of all peoples...is the great spiritual challenge of our time.
- Sam Keen

Through Gandhi and my own life experience, I have learned about nonviolence. I believe that human life is a very special gift from God, and that no one has a right to take that away in any cause, however just. I am convinced that nonviolence is more powerful than violence.
- Cesar Chavez

If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.
- John F. Kennedy

Dust turned to hope.
- Elie Weisel

For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.
- Pythagoras

I hope...that mankind will at length, as they call themselves reasonable creatures, have reason and sense enough to settle their differences without cutting throats; for in my opinion there never was a good war, or a bad peace.
- Benjamin Franklin

In the twilight of life, God will not judge us on our earthly possessions and human success, but rather on how much we have loved.
- St. John of the Cross

The peace process we all aim for will not necessarily be a result of the mere signing of a treaty or agreement. It must become a matter of our everyday lives, so that peace settles and lasts and becomes supported by everybody. We therefore have to give peace all the required care and preserve it and promote it.
- King Hassan II of Morocco (1929-1999)

The two kinds of people who exist in this world [at any one time] are the decent and the indecent. Color, religion and nationality are irrelevant. Kindness, decency and behavior are what matters most. Our collective challenge, it seems, is to create a city and community where decent people of all races, ethnicities and religions can look into the faces of other decent people and see only one thing -- God's image smiling back.
- Rabbi Micah Greenstein

A large group of us were crowded into the Gestapo hall, and at that moment the circumstances of all our lives were the same. All of us occupied the same space, the men behind the desk no less than those about to be questioned. What distinguished each of us was only our inner attitude.
- Etty Hillesum (concentration camp victim)

Tracy Emblem candidate for US Congress (50th District) says it is time to STOP.

Infant TEA party vulnerable to corporate control
Ardent TEA Party supporters see themselves as a grassroots rebellion that is going to change the way government is run, but are they naive and being controlled by corporations, just like government is now? If the TEA Party votes out incumbents, will not the corporations just buy themselves new politicians? By Shamus Cooke

Boycott Valero Gas!
Valero Energy — a Texas-based oil company — has already spent half a million dollars to fund a deceptive initiative that would destroy AB 32, California's landmark clean energy and air pollution law. Paid signature gatherers are already working the streets! Let's hit them where it hurts-in the pocket book-the only place they understand, and boycott Valero and all their affiliated gas stations! By Credo Action and Courage Campaign.

Obama's only chance for liberal SCOTUS judge?
"The U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, generally considered to be one of the Court's more liberal members, is retiring, allowing President Barack Obama to appoint a successor. It's time for Obama to take a stand and stop bending over backwards to every Republican demand. He governs like he's working with a Republican Congress, when in fact the Democratic Party controls 59 percent of the seats in both houses and stop letting the Republican minority push him around. We may not get another chance to put a strong liberal on the Supreme Court. That's why Obama must seize this chance now." By Harry Nelson

Chomsky Warns of Risk of Fascism in America
CHOMSKY: "I'm just old enough to have heard a number of Hitler's speeches on the radio," he said, "and I have a memory of the texture and the tone of the cheering mobs, and I have the dread sense of the dark clouds of fascism gathering" here at home. "The level of anger and fear is like nothing I can compare in my lifetime," he said.

A letter to Valero’s CEO
I emailed the following letter through Credo Action to Mr. Klesse, CEO of Valero, to pledge my undying support of a boycott of his stations in response to his company's half a million dollar campaign to gut AB 32, the strictest anti-pollution and greenhouse reduction legislation in the world, before it even takes effect. Enjoy this editorial romp through Big Oil's skeleton-filled closet.

Religious freedom clashes with non-discrimination
A case is now before the Supreme Court will test whether religious student religious clubs have the right to exclude non-believers. The case, Christian Legal Society v. Martinez, has the potential to resolve a long-standing conflict between two of the most cherished American traditions: equality and nondiscrimination on one hand and the free exercise of religion on the other.

Sonoma violates gay visitation and property rights
Clay and his partner of 20 years, Harold, lived in California. Clay and Harold made diligent efforts to protect their legal rights, and had their legal paperwork in place—wills, powers of attorney, and medical directives, all naming each other. Harold was 88 years old and in frail medical condition, but still living at home with Clay, 77, who was in good health. Yet the hospital and county authorities violated their documents, denied hospital visitation rights and confiscated their property upon Harold's death. without authority, without determining the value of Clay and Harold's possessions accumulated over the course of their 20 years together or making any effort to determine which items belonged to whom, the county took everything Harold and Clay owned and auctioned off all of their belongings. Lawsuit filed.

You paid more in taxes last year than EXXON-Mobile
"That's probably because they spent a lot more money lobbying Congress than you did. In fact, last year, they spent over $27 million in lobbying so they could take home a bigger chunk of the $284 billion they made." (By Move-On.org)

1st choice for Supreme Court: Diane Wood
Supreme choice for the Supreme Court: Diane Wood - by Glenn Greenwald. Wood is such a superior alternative. The University of Chicago Law Review article she wrote in early 2003, entitled "The Rule of Law in Times of Stress". This courageous analysis was designed to warn the nation about the profound threats posed to the rule of law and the Constitution by excesses in the War on Terrorism, but also more broadly to set forth her general view of the proper role of the Supreme Court when rights are being assaulted and individuals from marginalized groups are being mistreated. By itself, this article says more than I ever could about why she is really the ideal replacement for Justice Stevens.

DICK EIDEN: His Passion for Poetry

Richard Dawkins Wants the Pope Arrested
RICHARD DAWKINS, the atheist campaigner, is planning a legal ambush to have the Pope arrested during his state visit to Britain "for crimes against humanity". Dawkins, author of The God Delusion, said: "This is a man whose first instinct when his priests are caught with their pants down is to cover up the scandal and damn the young victims to silence."

Goldman Sachs sacks America
Paul Krugman: "...the S.E.C. is charging that Goldman created and marketed securities that were deliberately designed to fail, so that an important client could make money off that failure. That’s what I would call looting."

Wall St. makes bid to buy all 41 GOP senators
"Goldman stands accused of creating and marketing an investment tied to subprime mortgages without disclosing that the underlying securities had been selected by a billionaire investor, John Paulson, who was betting on their failure. ... Sen. McConnell [R-MO]-- who has been promoting his party to Wall Street political donors as the banks' last line of defense -- issued a letter signed by all 41 Republican senators in opposition to the financial reform bill." By Katrina vanden Heuvel

Is Goldman Sachs' Goose Cooked?
"Oh what a tangled web we weave… The bottom line is that the SEC is sending a message to the financial community that business as usual will not be tolerated going forward." The crooked Goldman scheme is quit simple .... and simply criminal.

Goldman Sachs set to pay £3.5bn in bonuses
GOLDMAN SACHS, the world’s biggest investment bank that is now assailed by accusations of fraud, is poised to reignite controversy over bankers’ bonuses by paying its staff more than £3.5 [$5.3 B] billion for just three months’ work.

Stacy Taylor's thoughts on Steve Poizner's TV Ad

"Hell, I thought the 12% unemployment rate, the collapse of Wall Street and it’s trillion dollar bail-out, the demise of the auto industry, an endless war in the Middle East, and a 30% nose dive in the real estate market were the factors that took Cali to the brink of economic meltdown, when all along it was the illegal immigrant, California’s perpetual political bogey man. Shit fire! Of late, I thought the little brown-skinned bastards were guilty of nothing more than shattering the early morning silence with their damnable leaf-blowers and driving their un-waxed and un-sightly Plymouth Neon’s through out toney suburbs, but once again I am forced to confront the reality that the the hermanos are the source of all that is calamitous and evil in our society." Juan del Rio: A courageous man of the People
Juan del Rio is running for County Supervisor. Is he a man of character, a man of the People? Will he stand up for us against men Bill Horn, Ron Roberts and their corporate machines? Here is a spontaneous story of his courage, as related by his wife, Jeannie Criscenzo del Rio, during an incident during a Easter outing.

Colin Farrell Bashes Gay-Bashing
We often think of Colin Farrell as an outspoken playboy, but now he's getting serious and speaking out against homophobia. The Golden Globe winner is taking the stand largely on behalf of his older brother, Eamon, who is gay. Last week, Colin spoke at an event for BeLonG To, an Irish LGBT organization aimed at teens, about some of his sibling's struggles.

Digital copiers retain copies on their hard drives
(CBS)Nearly every digital copier built since 2002 contains a hard drive - like the one on your personal computer - storing an image of every document copied, scanned, or emailed by the machine. If you're in the identity theft business it seems this would be a pot of gold. "The type of information we see on these machines with the social security numbers, birth certificates, bank records, income tax forms," John Juntunen said, "that information would be very valuable." Why Are Corporate Groups Funding the Tea Party?
"Rank and file Tea Partiers are, politically speaking, lost at sea in the dead of night, looking for the light of common principles. What the Tea Party will become is presently unknown; but those with an agenda [corporations] will do their best to steer lost boats at sea in their direction, with potentially dangerous consequences."
